JZ Studio captured the photos for my wedding. They arrived early on my special day and dressed very professional, I was impressed. They use excellent photography equipment and have a great flash set up in order to avoid shadows or darkness on the face. Not many photographers can get bright, vivid photos of my husband because of his very dark skin tone but JZ Studio did a perfect job achieving the photos I have always wanted to see! All the pictures turned out very crisp and clear. The color is perfect. Philip was very patient with my active 6 year old son. JZ Studio edited the photos wonderfully to enhance the natural beauty of the photo not to change it out of its original character. The turn around time between the photo shoot and receiving the photo is short. I am so very happy that we choose JZ Studio to capture our wedding ceremony because we will now be able to have our memories for a lifetime and share them with all our friends and family. Their photography is something I'm proud to hang on the walls in my home. I highly recommend JZ Studio for any photography needs that you have. I couldn't be more pleased with them.

I found Carrie on thumbtack and she was professional yet so much fun to work with! My 3 mo old was stunned by the big camera & would not smile. Carrie pulled out all the stops to try to coax a smile from him & get a couple. Her artistic eye & creative positioning were much appreciated as I am an artist myself. I felt she listened to my input & took it into account. She was a pleasure to work with & I would highly recommend her. Plus her pricing was very reasonable. So many photographers charge way too much for digital photos and that's why I did not go with them. Plus she came to my house! I can honestly say it was a fun and stress free experience thanks to her!!

Visual Ettiquette's lead photographer, Emil, is an AMAZING photographer and choosing to work with him was one of the best decisions about our wedding!!! My wife and I hired Emil to shoot our photos for our recent wedding in Downtown Chicago. First off, Emil is hands down a great guy who talked with us over the phone before the wedding discussing all the details of our wedding day and offered up some great suggestions for where to shoot around the city. On the day of the wedding he promptly arrived on time, even with all of the crazy Chicago traffic that morning. His warm heart, charming personality, and artistic eye made shooting with him super fun and relaxed. Shooting with him was actually one of the highlights of our day when we went around Chicago getting photographed in the snow around Grant Park and the Planetarium. I can still remember Emil running around (yes actually running) in order to find all the artistic angles to take our photos. He even stood on frozen Lake Michigan to get us the best shots of what ended up looking like photos the wedding photos of our dreams. Oh yeah and for all this, he is 1/4 the price we were quoted by other artistic photographers. Emil gets my wife and I's highest recommendation!!! If you want top notch artistic wedding photography that is still affordable, Emil is your guy! I never knew my wife could be such a supermodel until Emil photographed her!

I am absolutely 100% satified with Martika P. Gartman Photography. I have hired many Event Photographers for both Family and Church Events over the years. However, I must say that Martika P. Gartman Photography is the "best" Event Photographer that I have ever seen with my own eyes. She knew "exactly" how to pose and line up persons for photographs. She took her time, and the Event photographs are excellent "keep-sakes" for everyone attending the Church Event to hear my daughter, Dr. Sheri Prentiss, give a presentation about her newly published book," WHEN EVERYTHING CHANGED: MY JOURNEY FROM PHYSICIAN TO PATIENT", an inspiring book about Dr. Sheri as a breast cancer survivor. Thank you, Thumbtack Staff for making the "contact" between myself and Martika P. Gartman Photography.

The Maestro Media did an amazing job capturing all the special moments of our wedding day. We could not be happier with their work. Videographer, Mark Condra, was there working right alongside the photographer, capturing every imaginable detail. He worked so well with us and with our other vendors, helping the day go exactly as planned. The final products are videos we cherish and will use in the years to come to relive our wedding day. They gave us a copy of the full ceremony, footage of the toasts & first dances, a surprise shoutout video from friends & family (which we loved watching on our honeymoon) and such a creative, catchy highlight video that truly depicts the vibe of the whole day. Maestro Media was so quick in getting the final products to us. We won't hesitate to highly recommend them to friends and family looking for a talented, professional videographer.

I had been working with Harry to prepare for filming our wedding this Friday. We set up a meeting three days before the wedding date at which he said we no longer need a contract and demanded the entire payment for the project up front. This was the first time I had heard of this and I was thrown off by how it came out of the blue. Nowhere in his e-mails, website, contract, or in any of our conversation did it come up that he requires payment up front. I told him I was willing to give half and he told me that "That's not how I do buisness." He said that people usually pay him when he shows up to do the job. I agreed and said I would pay him half and how and half the day of the job. He said "that's not how I do business." He said he was sure I could find someone else to work with and got up and walked out of the restaurant. I was stunned! He has not returned any of my calls, e-mails, or texts. He has the right to ask for whatever terms he wants, but he needs to make that clear up front or put it in the contract, not drop it into a conversation three day before the wedding and then walk out when I question him. It was especially weird in that it came right after telling me he doesn't need a contract. It felt very off to me. I was not comfortable paying him in full under the circumstances and I felt like I was being railroaded into a last-minute bait and switch. He was unwilling to talk about it, negotiate, or show any sign of professionalism or care. He walked out as soon as he didn't get his way. I am angry that I am three days out from my wedding and I have no videographer! I did not see this coming!

We hired Mike and Kimberly as photographers for our company event/picnic at the end of June and we were extremely impressed with their work. They were extremely polite and friendly and even with the extreme heat they never slowed down! Mike even went above and beyond and brought his video came and was able to do an aerial time lapse of our event which was awesome! I highly recommend them for anyone looking for a photographer or videographer for their next company event! We will be using them again for sure! Kate ADP

We had a great experience with Tony. He arrived early which was nice to not have to worry about where's my photographer? I had looked through portfolios of other photographers and just really like his style. Although it was a little more than the other quotes I feel I was well worth it. The other examples I saw were pretty average. You can tell that Tony has a lot of experience with photography. My pictures turned out great and he got them done so fast! I would highly recommend this company for your photography needs!

The experience with Chris was fantastic! Not only is he a consummate professional, but he made the experience so fun, easy and positive. Unlike most family photographers, there was nothing staged. He just let us play and talk, and captured the most magical moments of our family being ourselves. I would highly recommend him to any family who is tired of standing by a picket fence or in front of a backdrop for their family photos. It is truly a unique end product that you will treasure!

David has been just fabulous. He made himself available short notice for a shoot on a Saturday, which was great. He is great at communication, too - always gets back to you very quickly and when we requested small changes to the finished product he obliged promptly. I would recommend David to anyone looking for a talented and responsive videographer.

We recently did our family photography with Vita and had a very positive experience. Vita took the time to understand our requirements and gave really good suggestions and ideas. In fact, of all the photographers we talked to, Vita was the only one who talked about the comfort of our 4 month old baby in the photography session. The photography session was very relaxed and Vita connected well with the family, which really helped. The final pictures look great and I would definitely work with Vita again.

Being a professional media buyer myself, I've dealt with many different film crews/companies over the years, some good & some average. Buller Media was FANTASTIC to work with. We received a sweet deal (again, I'm a buyer for a large pharmaceutical company) and we had a great experience with Steve and his crew. They showed up on time, worked on our tight schedule, gave the talent great direction and treated everyone with respect. Thank you for making our project in Chicago a success!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.
