I had a leaking gas line inside the furnace chamber. Dave came out on the same day (within 4 hrs of requesting a quote). Very professional, knowledgeable and reasonable guy. He looked at the pipe and started taking it out while explaining all kind of fun stuff about furnaces. He fixed the issue in about 15-20 minutes, ran the test and everything worked out just fine. Shared very valuable information about HVACs, water heaters after the repair. I am planning to use his services regularly now. I highly recommend his services.

John did a great job installing a humidifier on my furnace in a very difficult location. He had to re route gas and furnace piping for efficient operation. The area was all cleaned up afterwards.. He is very professional with good work ethic so I would highly recommend. He did and other work also - attic insulation and some electrical work and ask was performed efficiently.

We had Perfect Temp install a new water heater. The price included removal. The installer was great, as was the completed project. This was somewhat of an emergency since water was leaking. Perfect Temp (Dave Vernetti) installed the unit in less than an hour and withing four hours of my initial contact. Very satisfied and I recommend.

I'm a landlord in DeKalb and also a travel nurse. My property needed a new furnace and a/c, but being in California made it difficulty to meet potential contractors. I contacted 4 reputable companies and received estimates. I spoke with each of them at length by phone, but Josh from Temperature Doctors was the most thorough. He explained every detail of the install and explained the equipment he was going to use. His estimate wasn't the cheapest of the 4, but was highly competitive. His knowledge and professionalism gave me the peace of mind to hire his company even though I couldn't be there. Josh sent me pictures after they finished (which looked great), and the installation took less than 8 hours. In addition, Temperature Doctors offers 0% interest for 6 months on furnace and a/c installs which was enticing since I didn't want to pay the whole thing off immediately. I would recommend Temperature Doctors to future customers and would use them again.

I am not very familiar with this kind of work, but my furnace went down and it wasn't working. I called someone else and they were trying to sell me some expensive parts which I couldn't afford. I called Shippe Ademi nicely he explained everything that was wrong with it. He fixed it without trying to sell me expensive part and no manipulation. My furnace works now, and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg. I got his business card to get a hold of him next time I need any kind of work with the furnace/ac/electrical work.

R&R came out right away to give me an estimate on my 1882 farm house. I had a boiler system for heat and it was nothing but problems. And there was no AC in the house. R&R came in and put in two furnaces and two ac units, one for each floor. Since the heat used to be a boiler, there were no vents in the house. Which meant they had to basically start from scratch. My house has 7 different crawl spaces under it, and some are only 18 inches tall. Which meant there was a lot of crawling down there to put in the vent system, and they never complained. They gave me what I thought was a great price and had the work done quickly. Any future work I need done I will give R&R a call. In fact I just hired them to take care of my business's roof top units. It is a 30,000 sf building with 7 units. The upkeep is half of what I was being charged from the last company for the last 15 years. Thanks Chris & Jarett, Kerry B.

First time working with this company and I couldn't be happier. They gave us an unbeatable total price. They removed all the old equipment and The installation was seamless. Aside from all that, they were clean and respectful. When they left my house, the area they worked in and all the staircases we're cleaner then when they started. I was very impressed with the care they took during removal and installation. I highly recommend this company and their workers.

RS HVAC Services recently installed a new furnace in my home. Greg Stark and his associates first came and looked at the current one, which really needed replacing! Greg and his employees went over all the options with the different type of furnaces available and what would be best for us. I didn't feel pressured to buy the highest priced furnance, but rather had the opportunity to ask questions about all of them. Once I had made my decision, the timeline was quick and they worked within my schedule to replace the furnace. Greg checked in throughout the process while the technicians were on sight to make sure I was comfortable and happy with the service. The employees who installed the furnance were great! Very professional, and did not seem bothered when I asked questions about the process. Greg's associate, Joe, was also great. He is very knowledgable about residential HVAC systems and took time to go over everything with us once the furnace was installed. This company made me feel like they really cared about me, the homeowner, and making sure I was comfortable, rather than just coming in and doing a job for the highest profit. I would recommend them to anyone looking for anything from replacement to just a cleaning, You'll be happy with the professional, freindly people at RS HVAC Services! Thanks again to Greg, Joe, and the team! Happy to say I'm not worried going into this winter with my old furnace!

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

          • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
          • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
          • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
          • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
          • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
          • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
          • Cleaning and oiling the blower
          • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
          • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
          • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

          • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
            • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
          • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
          • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
          • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
