Keith did an awesome job. He fixed 3 circuits in the breaker box, a wall switch, a ceiling fan and 2 basement light sockets in less than 4 hours. He guarantees his work and had no issue showing me exactly what he had done. We are already planning his next project!

We hired Chano to paint the interior of our garage, and Chano also quoted on staining our wood deck. Chano was very professional, friendly and thorough during the quoting process and his team did excellent work. In fact, they were able to complete the job the same day Chano came out to quote. Highly recommend!

We hired Tom to finish our basement. It’s been a project on our to do list since we bought the house couple years ago. We met with a number of people/companies to get ideas and quotes. With the size of the project (2000 sq ft), we wanted to make sure we give it to the right company, having burnt by many past experiences dealing with contractors. When we met Tom, we knew right away he was the right guy. Tom completed the basement yesterday, and we couldn’t have been more satisfied. The basement looks great, and the attention to quality and perfection is astounding. Tom and his men are the most reliable people I have worked with. Showed up at 8am 6 days of the week for 30 days. Tom puts his heart into the job and we developed a very personal relationship with him. Highly recommend Tom for any project. He also engineered a solution for another structural problem that we had in the house during the time he was working the basement. Can’t say enough good things about him.

Marek laid tile, placed drywall, and placed a vanity where I asked. I had a small issue with the placement of an outlet, but everything went very well. I would hire him again.

Had a job to fill trenches in basement floor. Mike and his crew arrived early, and finished quickly. They were very clean and courteous. We have some major jobs coming up in the future, and we will definitely use his firm again, and we will refer him to friends.

Bruce and his crew were great to work with during our basement remodel. We shared our vision and he helped us to make it happen within our budget. He was upfront and honest about the costs that were incurred along the way and gave us lots of options/directions to go at different price points so we could make an informed decision. During the construction process, the crew worked diligently to get the work done. They sent daily updates with photos about what was accomplished each day and were always available to answer questions. Whenever we would call, text, or email, we heard back in a reasonable amount of time with the details we needed. At one point, we shared a concern about something and Bruce made sure that it was remedied to our liking without hesitation. It was so evident that he takes great pride in his work and looks to ensure his customers are 100% satisfied. Since moving to the area we have worked with several local "handymen" and Genesis may have just earned the title of our new "go to guy!" Thank you!!!

JMG placed cabinets in a bar area, installed the handles, did baseboard trim work around the entire basement , installed about 10 doors/jams and also tiled half of the basement . with all the work JMG has done at my house i would highly recommend JMG anytime and to anyone, he is on time , very professional and very knowledgeable . James has done so much for us this past month! We bought a new home that needed some improvements....after my husband's failed attempt at staining our floors, his guys swooped in and corrected it. Now they look great! After our gutters overflowed with crap due to a horrible past owner, his guys came and cleaned them out! James himself sealed four large cracks in our basement that were causing water damage, and the other day we had our windows measured so he can replace those too! James is very friendly, accommodating, hard-working, and easy to get a long with. I would and have recommended him to family and friends and we will be doing more work with him in the future.

We than discussed options for stair railing options and built in shelves which came out great! Next time I need a home improvement project done I will call Dan!

Vince came out to quote the repair of a cracked cast iron pipe. He spent a considerable amount of time diagnosing the issue and prescribing an alternate repair (the pipe was inaccessible due to its location) Vince ran a new line from the second floor to the basement, eliminating the problem. He did the job in a professional manner, cleaning up completely prior to leaving. The price he quoted after his diagnostic was not only fair, but was not increased when he ran into some difficulties during the repair. I would highly recommend him for this type of work.

The stairs from the kitchen to the basement were covered with old linoleum. My husband and I removed some of the lino and saw the wood was bad. When Glenn arrived, we told him to replace the tread and risers with new oak. They were stained and finished with polyurethane. A railing was also installed.

Installed a drop ceiling in our basement the week before SuperBowl 51. Wound up taking longer than originally quoted due to irregularities in the walls/framework; Tues-Sat job. Then hired them to do a 2nd project immediately thereafter - leveling and smoothing out some noticeable imperfections on the drywall. All this, done and cleaned up before SuperBowl Sunday. Pricing was also reasonable and these guys are respectful, professional, and friendly.

Was referred to Basement Buddies by a previous customer, and I was really busy trying to get a house ready to sell. Basement Buddies handled the project without me having to run around meeting people for measurements and signatures and payments. We handled everything online, and the work was amazing and a good price. Would definitely use them again. Through all the heavy rains, the basement was bone dry.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
