Leandra Knapp says, "Nick and Paulina are the "dream team" and "dynamic duo." I met them both about 3 years ago. Nick taught the group salsa classes I was taking, and Paulina was a new instructor at the same studio. After a 1.5 year hiatus from dancing (because of school), I went back to take private lessons with Nick, because I loved his energy and personality - and we quickly put together and performed my "dream dance." He is an incredible choreographer and really knows how to infuse his students' personality into the dances, and he pushes his students to stretch themselves, while always remaining supportive on both a professional and personal level. He is also one of only a *very* few people that I'm able to dance social Cumbia with, if that tells you anything about how good of a lead he is!Paulina, I have taken group classes with and she, like Nick, has incredible energy, enthusiasm, and skill in teaching steps and choreography. On top of that, even though I have never personally had a private lesson with her, I know she is awesome at that as well. She has trained up students with zero dance experience so that in a matter of a few lessons they are able to perform outstanding dances. She is also AMAZING at teaching her students how to effectively lead in social dancing situations; a week after I resumed dancing (when I wasn't very good at following most people), I danced salsa and bachata with one of her new-ish students (who had never danced before lessons with Paulina), and was able to follow him very well! And when Paulina would get a new student, if they were struggling with leading at first (as observed by me at group outings), she would train them up so efficiently that by the next group outing a couple weeks later, and it would be like night and day. I swear, I can always tell who's been taking lessons from her."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.
