My husband and I were extremely pleased with Express Moving. The two gentlemen were very professional and knowledgeable about their jobs. They did not slow around like a lot of movers do to increase the cost. They were in and out . If you choose Express Moving you will not be sorry!

Motion Transports provided excellent service. They finished quickly and did so with great care to not damage any furniture. Having used many movers, this is the first time I give a top review.

Martin was a fantastic representative for King David. They took very good care of every item we owned. They did a fantastic job. They were more expensive then some other movers, but you get what you pay for. We had a 3 bedroom home that they packed up and there were four guys total. They were great and would highly recommend.

Movers were efficient. However, we requested four movers and only three showed. The main person did adjusted the rate when I mentioned it.

Chano and work team are top notch! Chano was very detail oriented and took the time to explain each part of the work plan. He was open and honest about the cost of materials, and made sure we agreed to any additional work needed. A-Plus is a team that is genuinely interested in creating a quality product, but will try to keep the costs as low as possible. I think we all learned quite a bit about Benjamin Moore's new Natura Paint which was a little harder to apply, but looks great. We're very happy with the work performed by Chano and A-Plus!

Jamaal and his helper arrived relatively on time, and they were professional and efficient movers. They correctly assessed the difficult maneuvers required to move something as challenging as a treadmill up some tight stairs and hallways without scratching anything. The whole time they were pleasant and responsive. Thanks, Jamaal! I'll definitely use this service again if the need arises.

I wish there was an option to give a 10 star rating! Earlier this year, I had a horrible experience with M&M Movers who were late, ill-prepared, broke a beautiful piece of furniture because it wasn't wrapped, and then only wanted to give $200 to fix it when the cost to fix was over $3000...and the movers loved to tell us how terrible their day had been. It was a simply awful experience. So I was extremely nervous when I had to hire movers again. Now, I will have Chicagoland Moving & Storage on speed-dial for ANYONE looking to move. They were fantastic in every way. They contacted me quickly. They were able to work with my limited schedule. They came to assess what needed moving to plan accordingly. Their movers were 15 minutes early, simply delightful, were quick but completely thorough. It was the most amazing experience. Unless you have experienced the stress of moving, you would not completely understand how important this experience was for me and my family. Thank you, everyone, at Chicagoland Moving & Storage. Amazing in every way and I am forever grateful. - Lesley Picchietti, raving fan

I have used many different moving companies and they all seem to be similar when it comes to rates, number of movers provided and liability policies. I found these guys from Thumbtack and decided to give them a try since their rate was slightly lower but the most important factor for me was they had 3 movers coming over when all other companies only provided 2 for an 1 bed move. That equates to getting the job done faster so that not only I save money but also save my time! And oh yeah, I was right of course. They finished up my move more than 1 hour earlier than my previous moves and nothing was damaged. Nothing was scratched. They wrapped just about everything with either shrink wraps or blankets real fast. I mean really really fast. These guys are terminators.. They were really good at following my instructions and everything was executed nicely. I bought them a dozen pack of Tecate for job well done on top of my more than usual tip and they gave 2 bottles back to us to enjoy. Super friendly people. Give them a shot on your next move!

I called weeks ago and spoke with Jason in scheduling a move. Jason was very polite and courteous. He quoted me at a descent price of which I agree to. When the movers arrived on the date scheduled the foreman Esteban advised that the quote would be doubled based on the supplies, and additional services. I was discouraged and angry about this at first and demanded to speak with Jason. When I spoke with Jason he was patient and listened to my complaint . And tried to explain the extra costs involved but I wouldn't have it. After cooling down and seeing the team that moved, stored and busted their butts for me I was incredibly humbled. And realized I was wrong. Esteban, Jose, Chris, Rodrigo did a fabulous job! Jason was great as well. My only suggestion is that as I did share this on the phone with Jason is to have someone come out to the house where the move will take place to get a better idea of the costs involved. Conducting a quote on the phone does not serve the customer well. I hope Liberty Movers will take this in consideration as I believe this will take their company straight to the top! I will hire Liberty Movers again!!!

I had two very difficult apartments to move out of and into - a 2nd floor walk up in Chicago with a very narrow, spiral staircase, and a 4th floor walk up in NYC with very little street parking available. The movers never blamed me for the challenge either apartment presented, but conducted their work swiftly and professionally. My furniture and boxes were out of the first apartment in an hour, and made it to my new apartment in just three days despite terrible weather across the entire Northeast. During the move-in, the movers could not find any street parking within 75 feet (poor guys!), which only meant I had to pay an extra 75$ fee, which I was already made aware of as a possibility in the estimate, and the foreman handled the situation courteously and professionally. Because of the massive distance the guys had to cover from truck to apartment on this end, the move took a little over two hours, but it was no less impressive! All of my furniture was completely undamaged and the only broken thing was a bowl that I personally had failed to pack securely. I paid exactly what the estimate predicted (minus the 75 feet distance fee) and was overall pleased with the communication and process. My moving coordinator went through the estimate with me in detail beforehand, explaining certain fees that applied to my situation (in my case, both cities required shuttles (rather than large semis) on city streets so there was a fee to transfer my stuff off of/onto smaller vehicles, there was also a small fee for the flights of stairs at each location, but this was minimal). I had to add a few items of furniture three days before the move, and my coordinator drafted a new estimate for me painlessly and easily despite the last minute notice (I believe you're allowed up to 2 business days before the move to make changes). This company provided me with one of the most decently priced estimates after I had been dealing with other, larger companies that were asking for $8000 for a move that STI did for just over $2000. I highly, highly recommend their service.

I cannot believe I am actually posting a positive review about a moving company!! I have moved so many times over the last ten years and there is ALWAYS a problem - shady characters trying to take advantage with pricing, movers hounding you for a tip, showing up late, or just nasty attitudes. However, In Demand Movers is LEGIT!! Lee was open and upfront about pricing. They confirmed they were coming the day before. They showed up on time and even called to let me know they were on their way. Javy and his team were OUTSTANDING for the entire move. They were the friendliest and hard-working group of young men I have met in a long time. It was absolutely freezing the day of our move (10 degrees out at best) and they acted as if it was 75 degrees and sunny outside - they did not let the weather impact their mood or our move. I am telling you, they were terrific. Not only were they helpful and friendly, the finished on-time and at the estimated price!! How about that??!! The only thing I would fix - and to be clear the guys had no idea about this - was their truck was leaking oil and left a stain on my driveway. Again, they did not know and I saw it after they left. I am not someone who often posts stuff, but Lee, Javy, and their team were awesome. I HIGHLY recommend using them!!

So glad we found these guys! I was very edgy about the whole process of moving an upright piano, but the J.C. Movers & Lumper Services, Inc. Team. The team couldn't have made the process any easier! Flexible scheduling, great at emailing and calling back. Simple price estimation and a great affordable price! The crew that showed up were friendly, swift, and skillful. Thank so much!

They arrived slightly later than expected, so I had to scramble a bit and make sure both apartment elevators would still be available for use. That being said, the service was great, the movers were efficient, and I got what I needed. I compared between moving companies and this was the most financially feasible, which I appreciated. Thanks for your help!

I did a 2 person moving crew with John and Kelly. They were very punctual and ready to go as soon as I arrived. They both did a great job accommodating the presence of my 2 young sons as they moved. They were fast, efficient workers and very polite. They fit all of my items in one trip with a truck and caused no damage to the numerous fragile items I had. If you're looking for a hard working and accommodating crew of movers at a great price I strongly recommend Moving Mountains Inc.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
