Scott is a true professional. He is extremely knowledgable when it comes to puppy and dog training. Helping me create a training plan for my puppy. He encouraged me to keep in contact with him, giving him updates on how the training was going and any questions or concerns I may have. I would recommend him to anyone looking for help in training their puppy or dog.

Chris was great to work for training my puppy Lily. I really liked that he listened to what I wanted to work on, and made sure to personalize our lessons based on what I wanted. He was very attentive, and also made sure to check in between training sessions, which was very much appreciated. Leslie put me at ease the moment she walked through my front door! She is so easy to talk to about any issues concerning my dog and takes the time and care to personalize training to that dogs needs. Her training method allows for the puppy parent to both see Leslie herself do it and then for me to do it myself, since us humans needs training too! It's very crucial that the puppy parents takes and use her guidance as it will pay off immensely! My puppy, Rhett, was constantly love biting for attention and bothering us during non play time, like dinner. Thanks to her training (me and Rhett that is, lol), he is not nipping and knows when we go to eat, it's not play time. He's also much improved with greetings, has better focus, and is well in his way to be an excellent Canine Citizen! We love, Leslie! 2 paws up! !

I was already sharing my home with 2 dogs and I deeply wanted "A" puppy. I ended up coming home with 3 rescue puppies. I was honestly in tears when one of my pups developed sibling aggression. My very diverse pack was not blending. That's when I found Devious To Delightful Dogs. Dee's natural ability to understand pet/human relationships is unbelievable. Her passion for training is equal to her compassion for her clients (both furry and furless). Dee has taught me how to learn from my pets as well as how to teach/train them. She has an amazing love in her heart for animals and it shines through with her positive outlook. Thanks to her above and beyond approach I now belong to a happy and more unified pack. Devious To Delightful Dogs is simply the best.

We are so happy we found Black Dog K9! Our 1 year-old rat terrier/dalmatian mix, Buddy, loves Marty and loves his dog Ida! I can't say enough wonderful things about our experience with Black Dog. Before we started training with Marty, we struggled to train Buddy with general obedience and meeting other dogs. Buddy barks like crazy at large dogs, but tonight Buddy played with 105 pound Ida in our house. It was such a relief to see Buddy play well with another dog! Marty facilitated the whole process and we couldn't have done it without him (or Ida!). We feel so lucky to have Marty help us with the socialization process, and to see Buddy have fun with a large dog! Before working with Marty, we received quotes from other trainers and not only were we uncomfortable with their approaches, but their prices were outrageous. Black Dog K-9 approaches obedience training with love and offers training that is best for the dog, at a reasonable price. Marty has realistic suggestions, answers all questions thoroughly, gives great examples, and has excellent recommendations for dog training tools. In addition to the exceptional dog training we've already received in only 4 sessions, Marty has been kind, supportive, and is really a joy to be around--Buddy thinks so too! Marty is flexible, punctual, and he really cares about you and your dog. If you're trying to decide between trainers, go with Black Dog K9, you won't regret it.

Jim was the best! In 5 weeks (really just after the first lesson!) I had the confidence and tools to maintain my dog’s training. It made the world of difference walking my dog, Barney, each day when he would walk by my side and sit on command versus pulling the leashing and leading me. Barney loves our walks together, and I do too! He sits, stays and comes on command! I can't thank Jim enough for his patience and positive energy. His passion for dogs is obvious and I would recommend him to any/all families in need of training! Katie G.

She turned our dogs around and made our lives better by helping us train our dogs. NO leash pulling and the off leash training was amazing and I feel that the price we paid was a steal! I would have paid double for the service she provided! Simply amazing! Thank you.

I needed help with my GSD puppy. Yana helped with obedience, redirection, and even taught me how to clip his nails and give him a bath without him trying to kill me haha. She also taught me how to use toys to train him, and it is his favorite way to train now. Chicago Dog Mentor is an apt name!!! I still text her sometimes for advice and to check in and she is always very helpful.

I recently had my dog trained by William at K9 University. He was very professional and was aware of all of my concerns I had for my dog. He was careful to explain the process as to why he was doing what he was doing and that was extremely appreciated so I can carry on the training on my own at home! I will definitely return to continue to further his training with Will!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
