I couldn't have been more proud to tell my guests that Alexa and Samantha catered my wedding reception in June 2016! The reception was held outside at our home in Peoria, IL and they did all of the cooking/preparation on site. The display of items we selected were beautiful and delicious. My 300+ guests were blown away when they learned that the tuna was caught the day before in Hawaii. We had many guests ask for the caterers name and I would recommend them 100% for events of all kinds. Thanks again Alexa and Samantha - the event was unforgettable thanks to your talents!

We're so glad we found Lindsey! We decided less than two weeks before the event to have a birthday party with about 20 people and fortunately, Lindsey was available. We had never had a party catered before and Lindsey did not disappoint. She took care of all of the food (heavy appetizers, buffet style), pouring of wine, and cleanup so that we could enjoy the party with our guests. She even prevented our curious dog from getting near the birthday cake! Lindsey is professional, very easy to work with and provided everything we asked for. The only thing I would have done differently would be to wait at least an hour before serving the food. Guests were mostly interested in introductions and having a drink when they first arrived, so by the time they were ready to eat, some of the food, such as the meatballs, had become a bit cold. This was not Lindsey's fault, just something to remember for our next party. Overall, the food was very well prepared and presented. Lindsey was also helpful in planning the menu and providing suggestions.

Chef Julie is amazing. Her food is fantastic, her presentation is over the top and the value is unbeatable. The event was on two levels of our home (one for a cocktail party and one for dinner). We originally planned on 16 people. Julie offered professional suggestions as to how we could create the proper space needed for 16. The day before the event, the count went to 24. Julie handled that change with ease...including coming up with a new plan to create more space. Honestly, I can't say enough great things about our experience. We received far more than what was expected. Although our event was business casual, Chef Julie provided an experience equal to or better than any "black tie" event that I've attended Chef Julie is the only person we will be using for catered events in the future.

Kelly has catered numerous events for me, mostly dinner parties of up to 50 people. She has done an outstanding job in terms of presentation of food, timeliness, and her dishes are amazing! I had various chefs in the past but since chef Kelly was referred to me she is my sole source for events and catering. Outstanding chef!

Christine catered our outdoor summer wedding! She met with us several times before the event to ensure the menu had not only our favorite foods, but foods that all of our guests would enjoy! She engaged us in an ongoing discussion of various tastes and treats to make sure our food really stunned our guests! Day of event, she went above and beyond to deliver a beautiful and delicious presentation. I have also attended many parties after our wedding that Christine has catered and each event I get to taste new and wonderful concoctions of hers! I would recommend her for every event from a birthday party to wedding and beyond!

Anthony catered and bartended a Bachelor Party for my husband and I. My husband and I are childhood best friends of the groom so this party had to be special! I'll put it this way thanks to Anthony's wonderful food (chicken nachos and beef sliders) and amazing drinks, our party will go down in history! He had an awesome personality and fit right in with the crowd! He was professional and took his craft seriously! I would recommend Anthony for any occasion!

I found Groove Foods Catering on Thumbtack and hired them for drop-off catering for a surprise birthday party. First, the food was EXCELLENT!! Everyone complimented how great the food was. Aaron was professional, nice, helpful (particularly in selecting an appropriate menu), responsive, and everything was as expected - only better, really! So glad I chose him, will use him again for other events, and am highly recommending him to friends.

Dinner was good, the caterer took care of everything as planned. We had way more food than was needed. Only two things were less than expected; due to the driving distance and access to our venue, the pork was a bit dry. I would have liked a different gravy for the pork as well. The roast beef was wonderful. Overall, I am very happy with this caterer. I would use their services again if the need arose.

Angeleigh's catered my son's graduation party. We had a Hawaiian theme & she prepared delicious food. She was very helpful in deciding what to have, and very kind and easy to work with. I was never worried how things would turn out-which was great so I could enjoy the day! She brought everything needed & it all looked wonderful & tasted delicious! Many friends commented how tasty everything was-& it wasn't your run of the mill graduation party food. I was so thankful for her on a busy day to know that the food was handled & I knew it would be awesome! My guests especially loved the bacon wrapped pineapple & I loved the fluffy fruit dip! Thanks for making what could have been a stressful day one that I could enjoy!!

Our adult birthday party (sit-down dinner) was a big success. And a great deal of the credit goes to Tracey. She was very easy to work with. I suggested an Italian buffet, specifically asking for a rigatoni dish and a fettuccine. She did them and they were delicious. Even though we had a buffet, she served our salads at our tables, as well as dessert. She cleared our dishes before serving the dessert, something I was unsure that she would do. Her price was much better than I expected, which was a big plus. She planned for generous servings. She put the leftovers in our containers and put them in the refrigerator. And one of the biggest pluses -- the kitchen was spotless when she left. I would not hesitate at all in recommending Tracey to others. Cheryl Zionsville

There are probably a hundred restaurants closer to my home than the Local, yet I usually make the extra drive across town and wind up in a booth by the bar. The food is never less than outstanding -- locally-sourced ingredients inventively prepared by people who care about delicious, attractively-plated food. The menu has wonderful old favorites and also interesting specials inspired by seasonal foods and Craig's boundless creativity. The wine and beer selections are reasonable and carefully selected, and the cocktail are terrific. The staff is uniformly friendly, efficient, and informed. Superior ownership and management attract superior employees in this case. It is rare to find first-rate food in such a warm and casual atmosphere -- sans drama and pretense. It is obvious that Craig and Derek started the Local with careful planning -- a thoughtful philosophy about fresh, seasonal ingredients, cooked and served with care by people who are serious about food. I have never had even a mediocre meal there, and cannot recommend it any more highly! I would give them 10 times more stars if I could!

    About

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
    • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
    • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
    • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
