Red Line Construction, from Chad to his teams, were excellent in every way when they replaced our roof. Since we had already sold the house, (replacing the roof was a condition) he helped us explore possibilities for replacements, worked with feedback from our realtors and the buyers, and negotiated with our insurance company, since the damaged roof had been damaged in storms. He kept us updated every step of the way, including whenever there were delays due to weather or insurance issues. The day of the replacement, his team arrived early, and replaced the roof quickly and professionally. They covered all our grounds with tarps to catch the shingles and nails, worked hard, and thoroughly cleaned our yard after they finished. The house looked so much better when they were done, and I didn't have to lift a finger to clean a thing, then or afterward. Chad came out to inspect the work before final invoicing, and checked the yard with a magnet, just in case a nail or two had slipped past his team. I was absolutely pleased with the work he and his team did, and would recommend them wholeheartedly to anyone (I've already asked if he'd be willing to replace the roof on our new house in a year or two!) -RH, Muncie, IN

B & A Home Remodeling removed and installed a new ceramic floor in my kitchen. James was very professional and honest when discussing options and quotes. He was on-time when installing the floor and his quote was accurate. The cost was very reasonable. He also did a fantastic job installing the floor. Overall I had a great experience with James and would recommend his services.

Our experience with Personal Touch Painting has been amazing! We decided to have our front livingroom painted, as we do about every three years. We have used different contractors before in the past, but this company had incredible reviews so before even meeting them I knew I would not be disappointed. They were on time for our first face to room meeting, and within 20 mins we had scheduled for the work to begin within two days with the scheduled completion of one 8 hour day. Keep in mind the room we had painted is the busiest, most visited room in the house at all times with the most furniture. Day of work again began with punctuality with Wesley and Justin arriving ready with all materials, and professionalism. I have never seen a painter previously care about the preservation of his clients belongings as Wesley did. These guys are the real deal!! Wesley recommended using BreakThrough paint by PPG, and honestly my room has never looked so good. Clean cut lines, vibrant color, and it really gives the room a brand new feel. Wesley and Justin put everything back in place, cleaned up work area and finished ahead of schedule by 3 hours. We were beyond impressed and have already scheduled for them to do additional work on our home. I will only recommend Personal Touch Painting moving forward.

Arrived when he said he would and quickly loaded the junk. He carried it to the street rather than using the driveway. Very good service. Job was done the day I contacted him. Certainly would use his services again.

Our family hired John Beam to take our dream of remodeling our home from the concept in our head, to an architectual drawing that was used by our contractor. John listened to our wants and desires and brought them to life in the drawings. We expanded our kitchen, dining room and added to our basement. We highly recommend John and his services.

Travis has been great throughout our entire Carriage House build. Not only was Travis able to come in significantly lower than the other bids, his attention to detail is second to none. We've been very pleased with his work, and I would highly recommend him for any project. Travis built our entire 2 bedroom 1 bath carriage home from the ground up, and every aspect has been transparent and high quality.

Affordable Home Solutions has been both reasonably priced and reliable. Bob and Mike have done several jobs for me. Bob rebuilt a storage barn door, replaced siding, mitigated water problems I was having in my basement and helped me find resources to locate a small gas leak. Most recently Bob and Mike remodeled my basement including demolition of the existing basement, putting up drywall, adding a new wall and doors to separate utilities from usable space, adding electrical outlets and lights and painting an epoxy floor. I have been very impressed with the quality of their work and their work ethic. I will hire them again.

I am sad that I did not hear about this man and his company sooner. They called right away and started on my project within 48 hours. Made my home look so wonderful. I was afraid there would be a lot to clean up after he left but he left the area clean. I had nothing to do but admire the new siding and price was less than expected. Would highly suggest Darrin and his crew for any project. Thank you Darrin and Thumbtack.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
