Hired Paul to install an electrical drop for a garage door opener. He was professional, on-time, and actually went above and beyond to improve the cosmetics without having to be asked (it would have been fine either way). The extra effort was really appreciated. His rate was very reasonable as well. I will definitely be hiring Paul again. A+

I had squirrels trying to get under my tile roof. Darryl removed the board with 3 chewed holes in it. He replaced it with a new board, which had to be specially cut to fit. He then put 2 coats of paint. You can't tell there was ever any repair, looks brand new, matches the rest of the side where there was no damage. Darryl also installed a custom blind I had made for my kitchen window which I couldn't install because I could not get over the kitchen sink. He was nice, very professional, spent this time well. He cleaned up his work area. I would definitely recommend him to anyone. When I have other jobs that need to be done I will be calling him for assistance.

I couldn't give a 5 star because they didn't show up within the hour they told me and did not call. They were within half an hour of the window and after I contacted the scheduler I was kept up to date. The work itself was excellent. They listened to everything I said, had positive attitudes, and had excellent cleaning skills. I'm looking forward to having this company service my home for years to come.

LD Construction is who you should contact for all of your home repair needs! The owner, Luke Davis, does great work for a very affordable price. I had door frames, doors, shelves, and drawers that all needed to be repaired in a short period of time. Luke was at my house the day after I called him. He gives free estimates and also gives you pricing options depending on how much money you are looking to spend on a project. LD Construction does great work, and I could not recommend them enough for your home improvement needs!

Ronnie came on short notice to replace my garage side door. He worked quickly and professionally and cleaned up well. We discovered an unusual wrinkle in the garage slab and he sent an employee later in the week to deal with that issue.

I had a small tile job (tiling a corner window ledge to create a plant shelf) and Nick was happy to take on my little project. He came back a few days afterward to smooth out a few areas in the grout that I noticed had bubbles. Excellent customer service. We communicated via text, which allowed me to send a photo or 2.

Courtney was very professional. He gave me written estimates and a contract. He kept to the time frame we discussed. He checked in with me about the weather, since this was an outside project. He power washed the house and deck, sanded the deck and painted it. Repaired and painted the mailbox. He is currently installing new deadbolts on my doors. He has done an excellent job and I am so happy to have found him. I will definitely use him in the future.

This was perhaps one of the best experiences that i've had on a; Thumbtack. Sean was incredibly profession and clearly was a skilled carpenter. He installed some closet trim, window sills, and even replaced some stairs (on the fly). I would highly recommend him.

Nate responded quickly and started the work requested in a prompt manner. He was extremely friendly with my family and we enjoyed having him around. We had a contractor on hand for another job and he was flexible and worked around the other project. He was very helpful and took on other projects we added on with enthusiasm. Altogether he powerwashed and painted a garage door, power washed siding and deck, installed a storm door and did deck staining for us. We will be calling him again.

I had Thad install an exterior door for me... he got it done quickly in the time frame I had hoped for. He made it very easy to work with him... I simply bought a door at Menards, he picked it up and installed it for me a couple days later. Trustworthiness is the most important to me in finding a contractor... I found Thad to be honest and very trustworthy. I would definitely recommend.

We had them work on a variety of things...replacing rotten wood, replacing doors and installing steps for a shed, replacing the frame and a door on the garage and repairing a portion of the roof to eliminate a leak (three others had tried and failed) to name a few. We could not be happier with their work and they were friendly and professional too. No doubt we will be contacting them for future work. Highly recommended...they're good people.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
