Juan let me know when he could do a project (that took precedence over the one for which I contacted him first). He showed up ready to do the job and did it thoroughly and quickly. I'll definitely go to him again for this kind of chore.

German and his team arrived at my house promptly at 8 AM today. They were very professional and did a great job. I must say that the price he gave me was very fair and reasonable. German didn't even bat an eye when in the middle of the job I asked, while you are here, could you cut down one more tree. After all the trees were cut down, and the yard was cleaned up my yard never looked so good. I would highly recommend German Tree Services to anyone looking for this type of service. This 5-star rating is from a person who has never given an online review before. Sincerely, Karen

Mark is a very nice guy to work with. He spent time to discuss with us for our project—built a patio and plant trees for our new home starting from scratch. He understood what we need and made an authentic and professional proposal in 1 week. Though the project has been prolonged for some time because of the weather and busy schedule of his team, the work has been completed beautifully in July! I know Mark has got long-term customers because they trust him, I will also hire him next time for second or third stage of yard and garden building.

Juan and his team showed up a little early for their appointment, worked tirelessly, and did a beautiful job of cleaning up any of the tree limbs in the yard. I thought the original quote was fair, and during the cutting, Juan pointed out other trees that were more than 50% dead and gave me a quote to do it that day or if he came back. I went with the "that day price". He sent another truck the next day to finish up taking stumps that would not fit on Sunday.I purchased the home and moved in April 1st, so I did not know that so may of the trees were dead or dying, so I am glad that the debris is now gone. I highly recommend Progress Tree Service!

Arrived promptly at 7 a.m. and began the trim at 8 a.m. During the hour, he evaluated the job which included getting a limb between 4 wires. He advised his young worker while he was on the roof and provided good education for the young man. They were all very polite. I gave 4 stars because the area where the limb connected to the trunk is made with 2 cuts that don't have a flat surface. I would have given 4 1/2 stars if I could. I would definitely use them again. The quote was below the final price but he didn't know about the wires. I thought it was a good job since the weather was not the best and the limb went up over the house. So, 4 1\2 stars would be ideal. If you need a tree trimmer, hire him.

We had problems with a neighbor’s tree covering our garage. After setting up a project under Thumbtact, received a quick quote. He's an honest and hardworking guy with a great personality and an even greater work ethic. The price was fair and excellent work with tree trim and removal. I was anticipating a huge mess but did a great job cleaning up all debris. I definitely recommend and would hire again.

Bill did exactly what I asked: a 10 foot fence to keep the deer out of my garden and orchard. A tree fell in a recent storm and destroyed the corner. Bill did such a good job of the original that I'm asking him back to repair/replace that.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
