Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

There are not enough words to describe how easy this move was. I have dealt with many sub-par moving companies. But this is by far the best moving experience I have ever had. The gentlemen were on time and ready to work. They knocked out the move quickly and professionally. There were no hidden fees or cost. Thank you sooooooo much.

Needed several pieces of furniture moved to an upstairs room. Devin was able to accomplish this the day I requested (which was the same day that I called to get an estimate). He and his team arrived within the time frame given & were great to work with. I recommend “Movers that Make Make Moving Easy” for anyone looking for prompt & professional movers.

Back to Back Moving was a great service! Scheduling was easy and Karla was very responsive. John and Manny, our movers, were professional, careful, and efficient. There was a little vehicle trouble that caused a delay in our move, but the staff communicated clearly and worked to fix the problem as quickly as possible. I would definitely use this service again.

The best movers I’ve ever used! They worked quickly, efficiently, and safely. We were moving some extra boxes and furniture to a storage unit and the movers did a wonderful job placing things in the storage unit in a way that maximized the space. Very reasonable price. I would recommend them and plan on hiring them again.

KJ and the his cousin are great team. They made my otherwise disastrous moving day to a pleasant when 3 Uhaul movers didn’t show up . KJ showed up on time, loaded boxes carefully and unloaded to 3rd floor apartment with no damage and within 2 hours. They also have truck. This company is professional and did their job well. The manager, Blayne went above the call of duty the day after my move--assisting me with finding a diamond ear ring that my deceased father had given me. They care about satisfying their customers! I highly recommend You Move Me...

I had verbally contracted Norms prox 2 weeks prior to the moving date..the day prior to the move i spent anxiety ridden, because i could not get anyone to return a phone call or text to confirm they would be there the next day. i had left messages at 3 different numbers. I went to bed the night before not knowing if anyone would show up or not. Finally the day of the move they called and said they would be there...they were 45 minutes late...someone needs a wakeup call on what running a professional business is supposed to be like and how important comunnication is when their clients need it. The actual move part went OK. There were minor incidents, a broken lamp. and missing shelves that had to be tracked down.

EasyPath moving was able to help us within 24 hours to move our piano. The team was very professional, courteous, and accommodating. They even helped our neighbor to haul away a loveseat she could not have done herself. It was last minute, they helped and pricing was competitive. We will use EasyPath for all these needs going forward. AND recommend to all our friends. THANK YOU

KJ and Marcus were great! We Contacted KJ 3 days prior to our move and he was quick to respond and accommodated us on such short notice. They showed up ahead of schedule And worked 9.5 solid hours- expert job at packing Into one pod as we are storing our belongings for up to 3 months and then took our other belongings to our temporary housing. Will definitely use them again when we move to our permanent housing!

The guys did a great job and were very professional. They went above and beyond, hooking things up, making sure I was set. I thought the service was outstanding, but it was slightly inconvenient that they arrived hours later than initially promised. And, the third mover arrived even later, after the other 2 started, and I was paying 3 mover pricing. But, all of that was easy to overlook because of everything else! On the phone, Randy was exceptionally friendly and easy to talk to from the beginning. Would use again, for sure.

These guys are great! Very professional and responsive throughout! Pricing was open and up front and they were creative and accommodating with my move which was a little complicated (home + storage unit + additional stop to get a couch I bought). I did have some minor damaged items but they were very professional about the whole thing and addressing my concerns. I never felt resented for submitting the claim and they made the process very easy. Frankly, given what and where they were moving things (several dressers and couches, and neither stairway was straight), it's a wonder more stuff was not damaged, and it certainly would have been if I did it myself with some friends or family. Their office and management staff checked on me both in person and over the phone during the move to make sure it was going well. These guys are worth every penny.

My and my husband needed movers after the ones we hired sis not show. Not only were they responsive but they were professional and efficient! You will definitely get your money’s worth with them. I highly recommend and I will definitely use them again.

Can’t recommend them enough! They were communicative and and went out of their way to respond quickly. Very fair and worked with me on price and scheduling. They even stayed longer trying to help move a large item through a doorway. When I told them to just leave it they offered to come back to help. I was very impressed. Thank you!
