Jose was very professional. He provided a fair quote for my new lawn installation which involved removing the old turf, prepping and then installing new sod. He and his team completed the entire job in one day and it looks great. I was so impressed by his interest and commitment I hired him on to do my routine weekly maintenance.

They removed 2 small/medium sized trees, trimmed a big one, and pruned another medium-sized tree. They quoted me just to top he medium tree, but when they got there they saw that the tree needed a total makeover. They did the extra work on the tree, to do it right, at no extra charge. That is good customer service, how all businesses should operate, and a good way to get more business. In fact, I'm so pleased with their service I'm hiring them to come back in the Spring to landscape my yard around the house.

Originally wanted to hire sod installation and Gus provided a very reasonable price. Because I didn’t want to spend that much on sod installation, I ended up hiring Gus for flower bed cleanup and underground drain spout installation. We had to reschedule multiple times and sometimes it was because of weather, but sometimes I wasn’t given a reason why. Which was ok with me because I was in no rush and I didn’t need to be there when he works on it. My flower bed look amazing and I got many compliments from neighbors. Gus also put down some seeds for the area he buried the drain spout, which I appreciated. His price was very reasonable, which I also appreciated.

I hired Alexander Construction & Landscaping for a multifaceted project involving landscaping, a French perimeter drain, crawlspace moisture remediation and gutters, with re-seeding portions of my lawn. The project was timely, complete and fair-priced. I am extremely happy with my experience and highly recommend Alexander Construction & Landscaping.

I had Sturgeon Stone and Landscape do concrete for a 40X40 pole barn, a 23X61 driveway apron, and a 60X3 walkway. Mike, Angela, and Eric were absolutely incredible. All three pieces of the project turned out beautifully and were done very professionally and on time. The Sturgeon crew is very good at communication as well, they told me every step of the process as it was unfolding and were very easy to get a hold of to ask questions. I would without a doubt hire Sturgeon again for any concrete/landscaping project I have and will definitely be recommending them to all of my friends. Thank you Sturgeon Stone and Landscape!

I have to be honest, by far this is the company that will give you the best value for your money. My initial project was to install a concrete slap 17x12. They did so well, that i decided to do another project with them and also install a sidewalk from my garage to my patio. My neighborhood got so impressed that also decided to install a designed concrete slab in her patio. My only issue is that my grass got impacted due the heavy work performed but lastly some care a more seed will fix the issue.

My family has asked Randy and his company to perform work at three different locations. One location is for a full irrigation system and leveling the backyard. Another job is to remove landscape and rock. The other job is for a completely new lawn, a fence in the Fall, and possibly even a Pergola in the Fall or Spring. Landscape requirements at the third location includes creating new landscape beds around the home. Landscape inside the area protected by the fence will be needed as well. We look forward to offering Randy and his company many landscape opportunities over the next few months. We need to have a lot of landscape work done and lawncare as well. We will be utilizing Randy's company for opening and closing the irrigation system that is being installed. We anticipate nothing, but excellent work and we fully understand the impact the weather will have on when the work can be scheduled. We would like it done soon, but we understand other jobs were already scheduled. We are willing to wait!! We have plenty of work to be done so we know the times available will be spread out and not all at once. The shrub and rock removal job is the only one really needing completed soon. The other two jobs require dirt and with the rain that is not likely to occur soon. We anticipate our work being started the week of the 12th of May or the 19th of May. We anticipate nothing but excellence! We know we will get it with Randy!

Todd and his crew did an excellent job. They consistently followed up after there was an event that forced them to reschedule. We contacted several companies about tree removal and they gave us the best quote by a good margin.

Needed to have some trees installed to create some privacy in our previously open backyard. After getting several quotes picked Grandview Landscaping for not just price but confidence I had in them to complete the job after discussing our needs and listening to suggestions during the initial visit. Have used them for years for starting/stopping our irrigation system and was first time using them for landscaping service. Would hire them again without hesitation. Thanks Scott and staff at Grandview for the excellent work!

Yard Nut installed our renovated landscape and did a great job. Chuck made a few suggestions from a fee based design we had drawn up and we have went with his suggestions. We are very pleased with the quality of work and the quality of the plants selected for our job. I would highly recommend them for any landscape project. Jim W.

1. Repainted exterior of three story, 3 color Victorian house, did all associated carpentry and scraping, re-floored (including hand sand and stain) exterior porch, repaired and replaced gutters, re-painted interior of house. 2. Fixed burst pipes, replaced all powdered mortar in basement, insulated basement. 3. Built and installed permanent attic stairs. 4. Landscaping including entire yard till and re-seed, multiple plantings, and fence repair. Absolutely perfect! I have renovated three antique homes before this one and have never had a contractor like Eleazar and the Emarias Group before. They were very reasonably priced, stayed on budget, always arrived when expected, did the best quality work I have ever had, always cleaned up at the end of the day, and even brought me lunch on occasion! I found I could trust Eleazar and his group completely, so much so that they often worked inside the house when I was out of state. I initially made contact with Eleazar when another home in my area was being renovated. I was able to observe daily the differences between the Emarias crew and the rest of the contractors on site. I know that this home owner eventually booted everyone else and now uses Emarias exclusively. At my recommendation, four of my neighbors had their homes painted by Emarias. One neighbor also had a bathroom remodel done. All are Eleazar and Emarias Group devotees now!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
