I was searching for a Boudoir Photographer for awhile when I came across Thumbtack. Holli responded with wonderful email introducing herself and she seemed like the perfect fit. I had spoken to and or emailed several other photographers but Holli stood out among all of them. We had our boudoir session and she put us totally at easy. The photos are wonderful and we are already planning another session.

Judy has taken senior pictures for 3 of my kids and will be taking my youngest child's this summer. She does such an amazing job and works to get great smiles out of even the toughest ones. I couldn't be more pleased with her photography and our family will use her as long as she is available!

Life Style Photography did board and staff pictures for the ministry I work for. The pictures turned out great! The owners/photographers went out of their way to set up onsite and they treated each of us with the utmost respect. When it's time for more pics, I know exactly who I will call for the job.

Britne Lynne Photography did our daughters new born photos and they turned out great! We did some outdoor photos near our apartment building with our whole family as well as some in our home. Britne was very easy to work with and was flexible throughout the session; willing to accommodate my baby's needs while still getting the shots we wanted in the 2 hr session. She had tons of props we could choose from. And she was eager to incorporate any ideas/visions we had for the photos. I would be interested in booking this photographer again in the future.

Pros: - my pictures turned out beautiful. - We shot at 5 locations so the base rate was very reasonable considering the multiple locations. - Bethany sent me the ideas of the locations and she was responsive. Cons: ( why I did not give 5 stars) - Bethany was not very engaging or friendly with me. I am used to working with photographers who do small talk or work harder at making you feel comfortable with them. Here, I felt if I would not talk, she would not talk. - She did not give me any directions as to how to pose. Overall, I think you can get great pics at a good price if you are experienced in front of the camera. If you hate the camera or are shy, you may want to tell her that beforehand.

I feel like I could have gone through 1000 photographers and not found one better than Loryn! She is laid back and enthusiastic. Most of all, the finished product came out great - better than I ever could have expected and her turn around time was FAST! We really couldn't be happier! Loryn is worth every penny!

We are thrilled with Tara's photos of our wedding. She traveled an hour and a half to get there but still arrived early. She took wonderful, unexpected photos of our rings, table settings, and family and friends while my husband and I got ready, as well as great shots of us preparing. During and after the ceremony, she found the perfect lighting for our couples, family, and friend photos...We were also very impressed with how quickly she uploaded our photos to an online gallery, and how quickly she mailed us a flash drive containing all the photos. Tara was a pleasure to work with, and I highly recommend her and her great photography.

Grace did my husband and my wedding and engagement photos. I would recommend her to anyone she was really sweet and went above and beyond what most photographers do. She is very good at directing people and helping relieve wedding day stress to get good pictures. Grace is very genuine and truly seemed to care about me and my husband and wanted us to be 100% happy with the pictures. I haven't seen all of our pictures yet but I couldn't be happier with the ones I have seen and the overall experience of working with Grace!

I hired Jessica to take photos of my son--we did an outdoor shoot at Central Park Plaza in Valparaiso. The photos turned out beautifully--she really captured his personality and got some unique shots. Plus he didn't feel like it was a photo shoot at all--he just got to run around outside and play. We gave some of the photos as gifts to relatives and they all commented about how much they loved them and asked who took the pictures. Jessica is a very talented photographer and I would wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

        • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
        • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
        • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
        • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
        • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
        • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
        • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
        • Opt for tonally similar colors.
        • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

        • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
        • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
        • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
        • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
