The quality of workmanship in the services and the materials used by 5th Gen Group was absolutely excellent. Their level of professionalism was particularly noticed in the way they left everything in a clean and tidy state after their work had been completed. They were always on time and were accommodating in meeting the requested deadline. They definitely went over and beyond.

Great Décor has provided us a great service! We hired them for interior decoration of our new house. Elena of Great Décor was very patient with us and very considered of our color preferences. She suggested a lot of great ideas, and the vintage map for our office was a really nice touch. We will definitely hire them again for our basement remodeling.

I highly recommend the design services provided by Trait Interior’s Kelley Rucker. Decorating can be stressful, but Kelley made it as stress free as possible with her down-to-earth approach, positive outlook, up-beat personality, eager nature, and responsive communication. Kelley is one of the kindest people I have had the pleasure of knowing. She treated me like a friend instead of a client. She looked out for me every step of the way and had my best interest at heart during our consultation, shopping trips, and design implementation. Kelley listened intently, did her research, and took immediate action. She was ready to hit the ground running! It was refreshing that Kelley came up with a plan to tackle my design issues, sent me a course of action, and delivered. She even drove me around town during the shopping sessions and used her creative thinking and determination to overfill her car with large shopping items. She was right there at the store taking items apart and putting them back together at my home. Kelley was also accommodating and generous with her time and suggestions. Additionally, she is cost conscious and value oriented. If you have a budget, she will stick to it! Kelley loves what she does and her excitement for her work is infectious. No one else I spoke with showed the same kind of enthusiasm for my project as Kelley did. It’s important to feel like you are a priority when you want to accomplish a project, and Kelley made me a priority. I believe Kelley offers free phone and in home consultations, so you have nothing to lose by giving her a call.

Pat is awesome. I painted the entire interior of my new home but didn't have the resources to reach the high-up corners in my stairway. He got it done quickly and neatly and also helped me with a few other projects around the house while he was there. His prices are very fair and I'll be sure to have him back to help me with other jobs.

What can I say, Laurie Stancil from Loudoun Interiors is amazing! We just love our house, Laurie's paint colors were perfect, and the way she designed our rooms were unbelievable! We still can't get over how beautiful the house looks! We love the art work that she had shown us, and the way everything goes together so well, we don't know how she does it? Laurie is very knowledgeable and easy to work with, also her staff of contractors are very nice, courteous, clean and on time. Thank you Dan!! All we can say is "We love our house!" Funny thing is it didn't cost us as much as we had plan, I was a little worried about that to be honest. Laurie made our house beautiful and below our original budget! (Amazing!) We still don't know how Laurie did it? The furniture is gorgeous! I especially like the bedroom, awesome! We absolutely give Laurie and Loudoun Interiors 5 stars and would gladly recommend Loudoun Interiors to anyone who needed any design work, paint colors, furniture to art work!! We love, love, love our house!!!

Maria is a truly inspired designer. I love her work. Her vision is unfailingly crisp and fresh, and her use of color is unparalleled. She is collaborative and creative with a great sense of style. She helped us with our house remodel which focused on the creating a new kitchen, laundry room and additional den. She understood what we wanted, the style we liked, and gave us great ideas and suggestions to make our “new” home exactly like we wanted it. She is calm under pressure and gets the job done. She is a great design professional and I would recommend her to anyone who is looking for a designer in NOVA. She has great vision and attention to detail. I look forward to hiring her on our next phase!

Absolutely loved MagnifiqueHomes! I moved to Virginia and needed to downsize quite a bit, moving into a much smaller place. Maud was great at utilizing the small space I had to maximum efficiency, making it feel like a home at the same time. She kept me involved in every step -- making it a truly enjoyable experience. I couldn't be happier with this, my first interior design experience. I would definitely recommend MagnifiqueHomes without hesitation.

1. Excellent work in interior flooring design in every which ways...Having 4, in total, of these interesting and yet colorful carpet-tile rugs on the first floor of the house. I really love how neat they make the space look. The carpet-tile material tracks dust and dirt well. A light vacuum returns their pretty look within no time at all. They are both functional as well as pretty. These are unique and one-of-a-kind solution for your floor coverage, and that is what I'd like to have. Chun-Fa's working style is meticulous, thoughtful and efficient for all of my projects. He never drags his feet of delivering a rug design diagram. He listens to my feedback on the proposed design and would alter/adjust the design to my satisfaction. In summary, he is pleasant, considerate and reasonable to deal with. I'd highly recommend Chun-Fa for your design needs. You will be happily surprised on how good and trust-worthy he is!!

I have hired Dawn for the small project. I asked her to redecorate my newly renovated master bedroom. Dawn was challenged to refresh the look to the room using our existing furniture and wall color that was already painted. Dawn came out with a plan that we liked at the first sight. She proposed a very different window treatment and found a lovely coordinating bedding set. She picked up new night lamps and helped to find a gorgeous makeup vanity piece. The absolutely unique area rug that Dawn found for us was a key element that tied all things together. During the project Dawn was easy to contact and did her best to work with our budget and timeframe. We finished up by over passing both but in a reasonable amount. We have appreciated Dawn’s attitude to be responsive, nice and highly professional. My overall experience is great. My bedroom looks like a designer project: gorgeous and cozy. I definitively recommend Dawn for any interior design project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
