My resident holiday party was an absolute success! The residents really enjoyed their keepsake photo's of their family and friends. It was an Ugly Sweater themed party which made it even more memorable! Josh was our Photo Booth Operator and he was super professional and very accommodating to all of our guests. He showed up on time and was incredibly engaging with every guest! Thank you so much and we will for sure reach out to use Party Favor Photo again and again and again!

I’m terribly awkward in front of the camera. Elmo helped me relax and be myself. He worked with me to capture the quality I was looking for in my photo.

We had a big corporate shoot with multiple cameras. Metro did a great job making sure the speakers were covered and gathering B-roll. Superior attention to detail. Would definitely hire them again.

I needed headshots for a column I write for a national magazine, Hemmings Classic Car, and they had specific requirements for shadows and how to look away from the camera, lighting, etc. D.I.M. Productions (Karmn) was able to accommodate me on a very short deadline. Karmn was an absolute pleasure and extremely professional. I highly recommend D.I.M. Productions.

I wanted to have pictures taken at my birthday party for memory. On here, I found a very professional and proactive photographer who did his job at 100%. I am by no means a model and don't know how to pose in front of the camera, so he did all staging for us too!!! At the end when I saw all of the pics (over 200), I was so excited about the high quality and overall. Some of the couples at my birthday party started asking for his phone number. I am definitely happy with services provided and will use again when need arises. Thank you!

Gabe is the most phenomenal photographer I have ever had in my life. Let me start by saying I wish Gabe was my wedding photographer. Gabe photographed a birthday party for my daughter. He was so great with communication and wanted to get my perspective before the party so he was able to see my vision. He was around taking pictures without being in the way. Gabe remembered so many people's names and people were happy to smile for the camera because of Gabe's charm. When I walked around, I heard a guest say, "I want to hire him for my next party!" I couldn't imagine any future parties any other way! Gabe, you are amazing and we can't wait to see you for the next party! Thank you for EVERYTHING!

Eric was an amazing find. I was on the fence about getting a videographer mainly because of the high cost. Eric was a third of the price of most other videographers I contacted and provided more service than any of their golden packages. He was phenomenal! I can't say enough about how great he was to work with. He made us feel at ease in front of the camera, he gave great direction and I just saw my highlight reel (only a couple of days after the wedding!) and it is the more beautiful than I could ever imagine. His talent is out of this world! People have asked me if he travels to do videography, that is just how good he is. You will not go wrong by hiring Eric as your videographer. One of the best decisions I ever made!! Thanks Eric!

We hired Pretty Elektrik to film our entire wedding ceremony, with about 10 days notice. They far exceeded our expectations, particularly where they did the job at a very reasonable price. Everyone was professional and friendly. They showed up early. They delivered the video within a few days. They prepared beforehand to make sure they could capture everything we wanted (because one part of our ceremony involved people standing up, they even set up a second stationary camera and then went upstairs for a better view of our guests in that moment). The quality of the final video is quite high. They truly went above and beyond and we're thrilled we hired them!!

Malcholm and his work were both phenomenal. I hired him to do some filming in DC schools for my dissertation research, and he was flexible, professional, responsive, patient, and hard-working from day one. He truly listened to what I needed and wanted out of my films, and he did everything he could to make my vision happen. He showed up early on both filming days, and was great at doing what he needed to do, all while respecting and protecting the work that my teachers and students were doing. He edited my films (over 16 hours of footage across multiple microphones and cameras, down to 15-minute beautiful videos!) much quicker than he had estimated, and well before I needed them. I was the WORST type of client because 1) I have none of the expertise that Malcholm has, and yet 2) I had very specific ideas of what I needed/wanted, for the purposes of my research. Malcholm was patient and kind with me from start to finish, and he even made this whole filming/editing process fun! I cannot say enough good things about Malcholm and his company, you won't be sorry should you choose to work with him!

My wife and I were so fortunate to have found Adam during our search for a wedding videographer. It is easy to assume that the big companies would be the best, but Adam produced not one but two fantastic videos of our wedding, capturing the complete experience while remaining unobtrusive. Have no fear booking independent! He was able to coordinate seamlessly with our photographers and other vendors to ensure everyone got the shots they wanted. Through the entire process Adam was responsive and knowledgeable. It was an absolute pleasure working with Adam and would recommend his services to any engaged couple. P.S. He hooked me up to a wireless mic for the ceremony which captured the dialog beautifully. Most wedding videos I've seen have echo-y sound and people shuffling around since the microphone is on the camera in the back.

Michael is a great photographer and he’s so easy to work with! He is great at giving you poses and knows which angles and positions look the best. I tend to feel awkward in front of a camera, but he made me feel comfortable and relaxed the entire time. In addition, he went beyond the time frame I paid for just to make sure he got every shot that I wanted. Michael rocks!!!!

Bryan was such a pleasure to work with. There was a lot of pressure to provide video coverage for our annual conference and hiring Bryan made the process easier for myself and my colleagues. He's extremely punctual and very detailed oriented. He covered all basis for the video that I didn't even think of, such as audio feeds, lighting, camera placement, power consumption and so much more. The final video turned better than I thought and I look forward to hiring him again and/or recommending him to anyone looking for professional video coverage.

Miguel took the photos for our son's 5th birthday party and we can't thank him enough for the great work he did. He arrived super early to make sure of the party setup and was very enthusiastic in getting people smile at his camera. Now we have beautiful memories captured that we can enjoy for years to come and a photographer we can count on for future photo shoots or family events.

Franklin Sayers is an incredibly talented film maker. Not only is he a videographer, he is a world class producer. When Franklin was filming my project for my website, he asked me what I was going to talk about. After listening and talking in into his heart, he said Ok - wait a minute, "I will return". He walked around the property and came back and said, This is where we are going to do the filming". He is very creative. He doesn't just get behind a camera and shoot, He has vision, passion and talent when he is filming. The result is a world class film. He puts his heart and soul into the entire project. He included me and asked for my feedback and we worked together as a team. I was nervous the first time I was about to be filmed. He is so relaxed and kind, he put me at ease after the first couple takes. He kept encouraging me, which enabled me to relax and be myself. Franklin is awesome and I am blessed that God sent him to me. There is no question about it, God sent him to me. I didn't even want to update my website, I didn't want to have a video done of me. when Franklin approached me, I listened to him and was open. I didn't shut the door and I am thrilled and thankful that Franklin became part of my team at Bayley & Bender making my website a show piece. I highly recommend Franklin Sayers - he is beyond Outstanding. He is the BEST of the BEST. God gave him a very special talent and he is using this talent to help you and make you shine!!! He created and produced a sensational film for me. And to top it off---- he is nice and great to work with!!! It doesn't get any better than that. He is doing God's work!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
