Steve played at our wedding on October 1st. We had our guest arrive about an hour before the ceremony and Steve entertained them on the patio area while they enjoyed appetizers and drinks. Our guests then moved to the front of the plantation home we had rented and Steve moved to his 2nd set up he had there to continue entertaining our guests before switching to music for the procession. After the service, Steve again set up on the patio and played for several hours. The music that Steve played was perfect over dinner and the hours that followed. Later in the evening, Steve allowed the younger guest to play dance music through his sound system that got the crowd dancing late into the night. While we told Steve multiple times that he didn't have to stay, he graciously stayed well past the time we had agreed upon without asking to be compensated (we did on our own). We have received many compliments from our guest about how great Steve was. We would highly recommend Steve for your event. Steve --thanks for making our wedding so special!!! Paul and Tracy

I have shared numerous stages with Celeste and just love her. She is always professional, punctual, and prepared. Not to mention that she brings an amazing energy that is impossible as a performer to not want to participate with or for an audience member to not stop and take notice. She truely is one of the most talented musicians I know and one of my most favorite people on this earth.

I had the pleasure to work with Xen Live on May 14th, 2018 at Richland Golf Club, Middletown MD. He was very professional in every aspect: setting the speakers and the microphones ahead of time, providing a high quality equipment and being attentive to all the musicians including a singer, pianist, and violinist. The volume level was properly adjusted and the ceremony went as smoothly as possible despite the fact there was high wind at the site. I can't wait to work with Xen Live again, and highly recommend his business to everyone who is looking for a perfect wedding. Zhenya Zianouka, violinist pixieviolin.com

Jack Philipoom came to my attention at my nieces wedding reception in Williamsburg , Virginia where he was performing jazz guitar with an ensemble. It was there that I booked him for a garden party at my McLean , Virginia home. The flow and style of this extremely talented musician added an elegant ambiance to our evening. His personality is delightful, and our guests found him to be simply charming. I will definitely rehire him, and have highly recommended him to our friends.

Shannon Gunn, the leader of Firebird Jazz, assembled an amazing quintet for my mother's 80th birthday. In addition to her playing on trombone, we had a keyboardist on piano, a bass player, a drummer, and a trumpet player. Shannon proposed a fabulous set list with old jazz standards that my mother loves, and I appreciated her willingness to discuss the style of music and the tunes my mother would like. The band arrived on time and played two marvelous sets, one geared towards listening and the other to dancing. It was such a delight to have such world-class yet local musicians play for us, and Shannon made it happen! I recommend hiring Shannon Gunn without reserve!

I have hired musicians for over 25 years for different events. Mark was one of the most talented, professional, gracious and kindest person I have met. He played for a group of 60. The reviews from our guests were unlike anyone we have had in the past. We will certainly have him back in the near future. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a harpist.

Scott Schoem is a wonderful piano teacher who has worked with my children for four years. He is a talented musician himself who shares his skills and love of music with his students. Scott always is upbeat, patient and encouraging. My children enjoy their lessons with Scott and have learned to play piano well under his tutelage. He varies the songs they learn from classic pieces to jazz, rags and blues to holiday music to keep practice time fresh and fun.

My 15 year old daughter has being "playing" with a guitar for a couple of years now. I wanted her to get some proper training and Steve is an inspiration for her. His love of guitar and music is infectious and he knows how to teach the technical side, without it becoming boring. I also grabbed my guitar and joined in. We have now set up a weekly schedule and I hope to be the dad of a serious rock and roll guitarist in the near future. Thanks Steve!

I have used Alvin Smithson's services for over five years as a piano tuner, teacher and performer. I am always impressed with his skills, artistry and professionalism. Alvin first came to tune my 100-years old Steinway after it had been neglected for a number of years. He first examined the instrument, diagnosed what needed to be done and then proceeded with his expert tuning. Immediately after he was done and started playing, I was amazed at how good the piano sounded. Alvin explained that with a piano that hasn't been tuned or played in so many years, it will take some time to achieve its best form and sound for which it was built. A short time after, my wife started taking piano lessons from Alvin and as she started gaining proficiency in playing under his guidance, the piano itself gained a rich pleasing sound. Alvin paid close attention and adjusted notes or did a full tuning whenever needed. He also took the time to clean the strings and do minor technical adjustments. When a string needed to be replaced, Alvin recommended a technician from a highly reputable company. Overall, we owe it to his expertise to have the wonderful old piano do what it was built for by the Steinway masters. I should also mention that I heard some great musicians at venues where Alvin is the regular piano tuner. People who visit our house and hear our piano, or play it themselves, always compliment its sound. But the best comes when Alvin himself sits at the keyboard, whether at our house, at a social function or performing in the theater, it's such a joy to hear him play some great classical pieces as well as his own wonderful compositions. He is truly a very talented, sensitive and highly knowledgeable artist. And such a pleasant person, too. My wife and I feel fortunate to have Alvin give us the best piano sound to enjoy live music in our home. I would recommend him to anyone as piano tuner, teacher and overall musician.

Carey is extraordinarily well-informed in all musical styles and is very patient and good-humored as he communicates to his students a thorough grounding in musical theory. In doing so, he is very passionate about fulfilling his professional obligations to his students. In addition, he is himself an excellent jazz musician. I recommend him to any budding musician without reservation.

Ok. Our outdoor office picnic got rained out at the last minute. We ended up bringing it indoors to our office, which is filled with 75 six foot high cubes. We stuck Dave and Joey in a cramped, hot doorway with a few tables and told them not to play too loud!! Wow, now that is a tough crowd. BUT we really enjoyed the show. He was a great sport about the whole crappy weather fiasco. He made the best of a lousy venue and it all worked out fine. The musicians were both professional and talented. I actually can't wait to catch his next show at a better location than I could provide!! Kudos!!

Trackside out did themselves on June 16th, performing at the Annual Dragonfly Farm Shindig in Owings, MD. Their play list was diverse, spanning classic rock to alternative/grunge and all the tunes were exceptionally well played. Their Led Zeppelin covers were amazing! All the performers are accomplished musicians and the lead guitarist, vocals and drums kept the crowd dancing and enjoying the moment. The gig was very affordable and, frankly money very well spent! I will continue to book them so long as they are making music. Just awesome! Patrick Newman Owner, Dragonfly Farm

Jabari has been a wonderful teacher. He is methodical, knowlegable, enthusiastic and patient. I am a beginner adult student who was looking for somebody well-versed in classical music, and with an ability to teach both theory and practical. He has been everything I was looking for in a teacher. You can't go wrong!

Josh and a bassist performed as a jazz duet for a cocktail hour reception. They were incredible musicians and more importantly captured exactly the vibe we were going for. Josh is a true professional. Diligent communications, arrived early, and even asked our preference for how they dress. Highly recommend.

Cameron provided the perfect background music for our party. His repertoire was exactly what I requested, mixing genres from jazz to holiday classics to contemporary/rock. He played during our cocktail hour, but we could have listened to his music all night long. Highly recommend Cameron and his guitar!

Ron gave me a lot of help when I was learning to accompany singers and saxophone players. He showed me chord configurations that made me sound like a pro. I was asked to join a jazz combo. He was also great at accompanying me as a singer.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
