Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do professional organizers charge?

On averages, hiring a professional home organizer costs $117, with most customers paying $75-$150. Prices can range from $50-$540 on the low-to-high end.

Many factors can drive prices up or down. Reach out to organizers near you and request a quote for a more accurate, personalized cost estimate.

Do professional organizers clean?

Some professional organizers may offer cleaning services, including move-out cleaning and deep cleaning. Before you hire an organizer, ask them to provide a full list of their services, along with the price for each offering.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Where do I begin to organize my house?

The first thing you should do is walk through your house and start figuring out what you don’t need. For example, identify which items you want to sell, donate, throw away or keep. Then, tackle each room in your house one by one.

If you need help or if this project is overwhelming, consider hiring a professional organizer instead. You can also read our guide on how to organize your home.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Took 3 hours to organize one closet and a small storage area. Terrible communication regarding estimate. Project description clearly says the area need organizing are closet, bathroom, garage, kitchen, and storage area for a 2000+ sq ft house. She said her understanding was that the job was only for a small closet. Even if that’s true, she could have told me that in the beginning of the conversation when she just arrived and change her estimate. Unfortunately that’s not what she did. Not recommended.

Lauren is a dream to work with!!She devoted the day to unpacking my clothes, organizing my closet, and shopping for things I needed to make my closet a functuonal space. She even created labels for my storage containers and offered great suggestions for other spaces that can be touched up. Above and beyond service! Great job on some closet shelving that they built out for us. There was a little bit of confusion on the final price, but we worked that out and it ended up being a nonissue.

I hired Angel to organize my closet after moving. First of all I want say that Angel was very nice and accomodating which is why she earned a star. With that being said she really has no clue how to organize a closet. My closet was left in a worst state than it was when she started. We had to literally push things off to the side to walk through. She could do ok with more training and experience. Starting with learning how to categorize things according to type, color and garment direction. Sorry Angel I have to be honest anyone looking for a professional organizer doesn't end up in the same predicament. Thanks for trying Angel. It just didn't workout. I have to now hire a real professional to start all over. I took pictures too

Laurie did a fantastic job for us. We have very little storage so we needed major help with our storage closet. It is functional now and it made us feel energized to organize other spaces and clean out unnecessary items. I highly recommend her!

Julie was fantastic to work with. Our goal was to clean out closets in guests rooms and organize/clean out specific areas of our home. She works expediently and methodically and kept my husband and I on task during the time she was here (not an easy feat I assure you!). We finished the project with her purchasing organizing items for us and installing them as well. Her knowledge of what's available is great since I would have been clueless on what to even purchase! We will definitely be using her again for other projects and have already referred her to multiple friends.

I’ve hired Angel twice now to help me figure out how to organize my closet and bathroom in the vanity room of my apartment. She was quick, kind, skilled, and really has an eye for how things should be placed in a presentable and useful manner. It feels amazing to finally be able to see all the clothes I own in a strategically categorized order. The outcome has made a huge difference. I’m now able to get ready much quicker and have a huge weight lifted off my back. I truly mean it when I say she was a life saver. I’m very impressed with her work and will hire again when needed.

Clariss was very helpful with everything that I needed to be done in my home. When I asked her for help she responded quickly. She did a wonderful job with my master bedroom, closet, & bathroom. I loved her work so much I asked her to come back the next day to clean and organize my kids areas too!! She is such a life saver. I am a mother of three and have no time to do things how I really want them. Clariss did such a wonderful job that I will ask her back again in the future. I would highly recommend her to anyone needing help with their homes!!

My first contact with Gina was wonderful. She is a professional, knows her job, thoroughly educated the consumer what they do, process of organizing, what to expect. I learned so much! I am not a hoarder; I squirrel If I don’t know where to put something or I think I might want something, I push it into a cupboard, a closet or a drawer, to the side of appliances, behind bookcases etc. I am downsizing due to age. I don’t need entertainment things anymore. I don’t need all these linens for guests who don’t come anymore except rarely (moved away or grew up). Tim Daley came in and bagged and boxed and hauled and cleaned and sorted with me. He was meticulous, detailed. Instantly assessed a situation, discusses your druthers with you and moves forward. I am having him and Gina via Orgnze Texas return. Deeply joyfully satisfied. Value and punctuality also perfect.
