Edward Bell says, "I just received an annual inspection of my home's basement by a tall, slender technician (Chris M.), who tightened up the metal struts (beams) that were installed several years ago. Chris, turned out to be very knowledgeable for a tech who has only been with OBA for a little less than 2 years. He answered every question I had and offered advice for the future and assured me that another property I own, should I require service, he or his colleagues would be more than happy to offer assistance with that basement. This young man was exceptional and was the epitome of great customer service and I should know. As a co-author for The Customer Service Specialist Study Guide, used by the Electronic Technician's Association (ETA), in order to earn the coveted CSS designation, a candidate must complete our study guide. I know good customer service and Chris M., is an example of what people who deal with the public should expect. I don't know what his career mindset is, but if I were the management at Ground Works (Ohio Basement Authority), I would definitely put this young man in for a raise and have him be the face of service for others in his field. Thank you, Ohio Basement Authority for all the work you have accomplished in my home and I cannot think of any other company I would use for my basement or the basement of my late wife's home (that I now own)! As I have, over the years, I will continue to recommend Ohio Basement Authority (Ground Works), to anyone who has a need for basement or foundation repairs, inspection and in general, those issues an owner would have concerns with. I might add, once you hire OBA, you will find their pricing better than competitive."See more

“If your concrete floor appears worn, stained, uneven, or consistently traps dirt despite regular cleaning, it might be time for professional concrete polishing to restore its appearance and functionality.“

Stephanie B. says, "We had a fantastic experience with Carlos and his team at CKG Small Concrete! From day one, Carlos was incredibly responsive, he answered all of our questions and really helped guide us in choosing the right patio size for our space. His team was professional, hardworking, and genuinely kind throughout the entire process. Their pricing was also very fair, which made the whole experience even better. Even when a hiccup came up (which was not their fault at all), Carlos and his crew handled it with honesty and integrity, doing the right thing to make it right. We couldn’t be happier with our beautiful new stamped patio. Highly recommend Carlos and his team if you’re looking for quality work, fair pricing, and great service!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Professionals typically polish concrete using a specialized grinder fitted with progressively finer diamond-grit pads. They'll typically use large, planetary grinders for a fast, scratch-free polish, combined with handheld angle grinders for corners and tight spaces. The process starts with coarse grits to remove any imperfections and smooth the surface. They then often switch to finer grits to create the smooth, high-gloss finish you’re looking for.

When looking for a professional to polish your concrete, make sure you complete the following steps:

  • Verify their license and insurance: Some pros may need a flooring or general contractor license, and you should always confirm they have general liability insurance. Requirements vary by region.

  • Get several estimates: A proper estimate should detail the cost per square foot, the level of gloss you want, any prep work like crack repair, the type of sealer to be used, and a project timeline.

  • Read their reviews: Good signs are reviews that mention punctuality, cleanliness (especially dust control), and satisfaction with the final look of the floor. Red flags include complaints about uneven finishes, swirl marks, or sealer that peels quickly.

  • Look at their portfolios: Look for photos of completed projects with a consistent sheen and reflection. Before-and-after photos are especially helpful to see the quality of their work.

  • Find out if they have warranties: A pro may offer a warranty on their workmanship, which could cover issues like the sealer bubbling or peeling. Always ask what’s covered and get the details in writing.

  • Ask important questions: Before hiring, ask questions like, “What is your process for dust containment during grinding?” and “How should I maintain the polished floors after you’re done?”

Yes, you can polish concrete yourself, but it’s a labor-intensive project that requires specialized equipment. You may need to rent a heavy floor grinder and use a series of progressively finer diamond pads to get a smooth finish. The process can also be quite messy and dusty, and improper application can cause scratches, gouges, and other damage. If you don't have the equipment or DIY experience, consider hiring a pro.

Typically, it will take a professional a few days to complete a concrete polishing project. The total time depends on a few factors. For example:

  • The total square footage of the floor is a major consideration, as larger areas simply take more time to cover.

  • If your existing concrete has cracks, stains, or uneven spots, these will need to be repaired first, adding to the timeline.

  • Achieving a higher level of gloss requires more grinding and polishing steps than a simpler matte or satin finish.

  • The accessibility of the space matters — an empty room is faster to work in than one where your pro has to move furniture or equipment.

  • Some sealants or coatings applied after polishing need a specific amount of time to cure properly before you can use the floor.

Remember: The timeline for your project will vary depending on many factors. Always ask your pro to provide an estimate.

Concrete polishing pros generally use specialized grinders and diamond abrasives to create a smooth, durable finish. The process typically involves:

  • Surface preparation: Clean the floor and repair cracks or imperfections.

  • Grinding: Use progressively finer diamond grits to remove surface flaws and smooth the concrete.

  • Densifying: Apply a chemical hardener to strengthen the concrete and reduce dusting.

  • Polishing: Continue with finer grits to achieve the desired sheen level.

  • Sealing (optional): Apply a stain guard or sealer for added protection.

The result is typically a low-maintenance, long-lasting, and glossy concrete surface.

Generally, it's best to regularly clean your polished concrete with a microfiber mop and a pH-neutral cleaner to keep it looking its best. Avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach, vinegar, or ammonia, as they can damage the surface. Depending on foot traffic, you may also need to have a professional reapply a protective guard product every few years to maintain its shine and durability. Ask your concrete polishing pro for maintenance recommendations when they complete the job.

Polishing concrete is often more affordable than installing other flooring options, such as tile or hardwood. The final price depends on the size of the space, the condition of the existing concrete, and your desired level of shine. For example, a basic polish will typically cost less than a highly decorative finish. Compare polishing with other flooring options to see which ones best fit your budget and long-term goals.
