About

I teach drum lessons, focusing on the drumset and snare drum. I stress good hand positions, good technique, rhythmic reading skills, rudiments as they logically evolve, and all styles on drumset (beginning with the student's choice of styles). My aim is to make everything fun, too! I have a waiting room for parents and students. I also perform with numerous groups throughout the Washington, DC and Baltimore region.

About

I have been playing drums for 45 years. I had been giving drum lessons off and on for about 25 of those years. Until about two years ago, I decided to start giving lessons on a more regular basis. Because of my passion for the drums, I wanted to pass my knowledge onto other people, and teaching gives me that satisfaction of seeing my students become good drummers themselves. I teach beginners to intermediate students ages eight and up. For those students who are total beginners and have never played before or held a pair of drum sticks, I will go through the fundamentals, such as holding the sticks, proper technique, a few basic rudiments, keeping good time, and some basic rhythm patterns. My main styles taught, but not limited to, are rock and roll from the 50's and up, classic rock, hard rock and metal, pop, country (it's all related believe me) and Christian contemporary. I have a studio with two drum kits, one with double bass, if the student is interested in double bass technique, and the needed educational written and video material. I can also teach by ear if that is the desired approach. I believe my years of playing and teaching experience are valuable relating to students in not only what they want to learn but in accomplishing their goals on the drums. I have very good half hour and hourly lesson rates.

I am a graduate of South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia, and am currently a junior at the State University of New York in Fredonia Mason School of Music, majoring in music performance and music therapy with a focus on percussion. I have been studying and performing music for nine years now. I have studied under the directions of the following: * Aubrey Adams - Freelance percussionist, retired principal percussionist of Air Force Band, percussionist of Maryland Symphony, substitute percussionist of National Symphony Orchestra, South Lakes High School percussion instructor as well as private percussion instructor and recording musician * Dr. Karolyn Stonefelt - Recording artist, currently head of Fredonia School of Music Percussion Department, principal percussionist and timpanist of Western New York Chamber Orchestra, freelance percussionist, percussionist with Erie Opera Company, on- and off-Broadway percussionist and retired percussionist from Baltimore Symphony * John Bacon - Staff percussionist at SUNY Fredonia Mason School of Music, freelance percussionist and substitute percussionist with Buffalo Philharmonic * Tiffany Nicely - Staff percussionist at SUNY Fredonia Mason School of Music, freelance percussionist, head of Percussion Department at Buffalo University in NY, and substitute percussionist for Buffalo Philharmonic * Bernard Woma - African drumming instructor at Fredonia School of Music, Ghanaian master gyil player Experiences During high school, I performed with the South Lakes wind ensemble, percussion ensemble, marching band, orchestra, choir, the Fairfax Symphony, the Reston Chamber Community Orchestra, and the All District Symphonic Band. I have taught lessons for the past three years in a small percussion studio I hold at my home. I performed in multiple ensembles when in college, such as percussion ensemble, African drumming ensemble, world mallet keyboard ensemble, symphony orchestra and band. I marched in the South Lakes High School drum line for four years and played snare for two. I am proficient in the warmups, techniques, music reading and writing, am open to teaching methods and the discipline of the drum line standard. I also have previous experience with teaching in the South Lakes High School percussion and drum line for two summers after graduation of high school. I am proficient in all main percussion instruments, including the snare drum (orchestral and rudimental/drum corps), the mallet keyboard, the timpani, and the drum set as well as auxiliary instruments, such as the tambourine, the triangle, the shakers, the hand drums, the djembe, and many more. Qualities As a musician, I am able to read, write and perform music, have great patience for working with others as well as always eager to learn something new. I believe that I am a polite, positive, encouraging, friendly, independent, and responsible individual and am always open for new experiences. With the snare drum, I can teach orchestral and rudimental/drum corps styles of snare drum. I focus on 40 rudiments, repertoire, technique (matched or traditional grips), musicality, expression, and quality of sound. I can also teach instrument tuning, care and maintenance. For the mallet keyboard percussion, I am proficient at marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, glockenspiel, balophone, and gyil. I also focus on technique, accuracy, musical expression, quality of sound, four-mallet (Stevens/traditional crossed/Burton crossed) and two-mallet technique and grip. On the timpani, I have the ability to teach timpani technique (French/German), musicality, tone quality, tuning accuracy and methods, and repertoire. With the drum set, I am a versatile player on the drum set. I can teach multiple Latin styles, hip-hop/rap, jazz, rock and funk. I focus on limb independence, musical expression, style understanding, ability to play and adjust with other musicians, tone quality, polyrhythms, rudimentary use on the drum set, versatility and popular repertoire for the drum set. Importance of Music I believe that music is a primary necessity in everyone's everyday lives and by studying music through instruments, we learn not only about these instruments but also about ourselves and how our musical personas play a roll in each individual's life. Percussion is as primal as an instrument gets. It dates to prehistoric times with ancient drums and the basic ability to keep a pulse. It is an instinct felt in all our lives through our heartbeat, yet it is a special craft that takes all life to perfection and creates unbelievable moments of joy and passion through music.

About

I'm a young professional drummer with 17 years of experience in percussion. I got started in a school band and stayed sharp drumming in rock bands throughout high school, college, and even graduate school. These days, I tour the country as part of an indie/alternative rock duo. When I'm not on the road, I am available to give lessons for beginner- and intermediate-level drummers. My approach to drumming revolves around skill and enthusiasm for the craft. I owe much of my proficiency and success to a private instructor I had years back. I'm starting Proven Drum Lessons because I'm confident that I can make the same type of lasting positive impact on today's crop of students. For what it's worth, I'm also an economist with a Master of Science degree from a prominent research university. Hence, the intersection of my background and experience makes me uniquely qualified to offer perspectives on the financial side of life as a musician. This could also be of some use to an aspiring drummer. My pricing is reasonable and I'm a punctual, friendly, and reliable person. I've also developed patience, having taught economics to undergraduates at the university and community college levels. On a good day, I'd like to think I'm also a cool guy and someone to look up to. If you or someone you know is looking for lessons, reach out! I'd love to start a discussion. Kevin Founder, Proven Drum Lessons

I am a sound designer with a jazz vocal background. I have been teaching privately for 10 years. I encourage songwriting, self-accompaniment, and motivation to practice and create for one's self. My partner has been a drummer for as long as he can remember. He will be teaching the drum portion. We have a set in our music studio for the studio. It is highly recommended that the student has a set of their own or at least a drum practice pad. Our program is designed for growing children and high school students. We are also trained to help you with college audition processes.
