Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.

Amazing teacher! We arrived not knowing a thing about professional dancing but left with things to practice and a better understanding of how to dance together. Can't wait for the next lesson! UPDATE** We had Johnny choreograph our first dance for our wedding which was 2 weeks ago. After a few months of lessons and practicing, we nailed it! Everyone at the wedding was commenting saying they felt like they were watching "Dancing with the Stars" and said it was the highlight of the wedding! All thanks to Johnny's creativity, patience, knowledge, and availability. He was able to come up with an amazing dance for us, show us and guide us how to do it well, and then of course, we practiced at home a ton between lessons and voila! We completed our goal of having an impressive first dance to wow our guests. We are so thankful that we found him and would recommend him to anyone and everyone. Pointers for others who are thinking of hiring someone for their first dance or other event... #1 Hire Johnny #2 Give yourself plenty of time before the event to begin lessons. You will need time to learn and memorize your moves but also more than anything, to practice! We started months before our wedding and are so happy we did. It takes so much time and commitment to do it right and wow your guests. #3 See #1 :)
