Very professional and great to work with.

We have the Department of Criminal Justice Services license number 11-2199. We are serving the Northern Virginia to Richmond and providing "the-best-of-the best" private investigators for divorce and other family law investigative matters, including child custody, cohabiting, asset searching, etc. We offer flat-fee, fully-estimated services and provided on a task-by-task basis and specified in writing. It is practically 'impossible' for a true professional to learn enough information through Thumbtack to design an investigation for success and economy. We are known for giving the 'best' professional advice to consumers, the following are: * Please be advised that your inquiry is sent to numerous and unverified individuals, including attorneys, one of whom may be representing your spouse or may catch the eye of an investigator working for your spouse. It is ill-advised to put any, I repeat, any details of your case on Thumbtack or use your real first name and last name initial or professional credential identifier such as 'Dr." A less-than-ethical investigator will, I repeat, will track down the name, location or go to court to find a court case in that name and contact the prospective subject of investigation. These investigators are known for offering a 'clean bill of investigation' in return for a handsome fee -- mark my word. * Defer to the phone to discuss any and all details of your legal matter. A public forum is no place to shop for investigative services. * Beware the 'non-refundable, no guarantee, open-ended retainer amount, with no plan and no written agreement specifying 'scope' and 'fees' as required by state regulation and in the event of complaint. For the average domestic (infidelity) case, you should spend at least an hour on the phone with an experienced investigator before they can arrive to an efficient plan that can be executed economically and to receive a quote for a fully-estimated fee. * Please consider shopping by 'experience' not 'geography' as all private investigators are not competent in every type of investigation. Look to the investigation agency's license number to help with determining 'length of time in business", in Virginia, the higher the last four (4) digits, the less time in business. Remember, a law enforcement background does not guarantee experience with civil court matters or domestic investigations, such as infidelity and child custody -- as police officers are trained in criminal matters or may only have experience sitting behind a desk attending to administrative matters. * Ask who mentored the owner of the company into the private investigation business, when and for how long it was mentored? What if there's no mentor? Ask where and when they gained their experience for your type of investigation. What if they have no mentor and no experience? Look elsewhere. Virginia's regulatory scheme allows just about anyone meeting very minimum requirements to become an agency owner. * Ask who is conducting your investigation and how long have they been a 'registered' private investigator. Registration through the state is no guarantee of experience. Is your very important legal matter being turned over to a rookie? For the average adultery case, no less than a solid five years of experience is acceptable. Ask for verification of length of time registered. Usually, investigators only get 'one shot' at getting the evidence you absolutely need to protect your marital rights. If handled improperly, your child could be put at risk of being absconded with by the non-custodial parent. * One, or two investigators? Mobile or fixed surveillance? Will the agency properly staff your investigation for success? Or, will they tell you more than one investigator will be used, when in reality, it's just a lone wolf attempting to get the subject from point "A" to point "B" through rush-hour traffic and later tell you 'he/she got lost at the light? Reports of investigators telling clients they conducted surveillance, when instead they were laying on the couch, remote control in the hand on your dime -- abound. Do you know how to 'guarantee' that the job was done? This agency specializes in family law investigations. Nationally known volunteer investigative specialist, consultant advising left-behind parents of family abducted children officially reported as 'missing' to law enforcement, locating these children with a 98% success rate and coordinating law enforcement's recovery of kidnapped and other missing children, such as teen runaways. We will consider mysterious adult disappearances on a case-by-case basis and can arrange for competent investigators no matter the location. We are very experienced with mobbing or 'gang stalking' situations, providing victims of this type of psychological terror with resources, investigative and non-investigative solutions in order to find relief and long before this phenomena became recognized main-stream and before such terms were even coined. What about an attorney not doing their job? Do you feel like you're working for them instead of the other way around? Are you feeling intimidated or that something's not right? If so, then you are probably right. Eight out of 10 callers to this agency (both men and women) complain that their attorney does not return calls, refuses to give them information about their case, uses intimidation tactics to keep them at bay or turns their case over to a low level and inexperienced associates. Contact us for competent, non 'high-rent' family law attorney referral. We do not receive a referral fee, but we know these attorney's fight and subsequently win our mutual clients' cases. Thank you for considering A Woman-Owned Detective Agency where your best legal interests and best interests of your children are our driving force.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a private investigator do?

First and foremost, good private investigators follow laws. Unlike on TV, they don’t break in windows or hack into hospital computer systems to get you intel. When you hire a private investigator, you’re hiring a professional to gather facts and find information for you. Although they can’t obtain certain information (such as health records), they do have access to information that most civilians do not. Often private investigators are hired to perform surveillance or background checks or investigate cases such as adultery, child custody, missing persons, hidden assets, or debugging, and theft or other crimes.

Private investigators can be hired to interview people and provide that information to the client, perform photo or video surveillance, monitor activity at a location where you suspect criminal activities or questionable behavior, track a person’s movements, find missing people, do deep-dive background checks, and more. Private investigation can be helpful if you’re trying to get a court order but need evidence. Private investigators can also help find birth parents. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210 per hour.

What does a private investigator cost?

Private investigation isn’t just for blockbuster action movies. Hiring a private investigator can help in all kinds of situations ranging from finding a birth parent to improving personal security. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210, although pricing often hovers between $40 and $100 depending on the complexity of the services you need. Where you live in the country will affect your costs for private investigation; larger cities have higher business overhead and a higher cost of living, which in turn means higher service rates. The complexity of your case can also affect cost. A basic background check may have a flat rate, while hiring a private investigator to help with your child custody case may require more legwork and research, and therefore cost more. Some private investigators work on retainer. A retainer is essentially a nonrefundable deposit you pay to the professional — meaning you have retained their services — who then works against that amount. Here are some examples of average private investigation costs:

  • Hourly rate: $60-$70; costs can vary based on current fuel prices.
  • Flat rate: $100 for comprehensive background investigation services.
  • Retainer: $1,500 minimum retainer required by some pros before starting work.
