I having nothing but good things to say about this company. Natasha is very friendly, exceedingly professional, and most importantly great with dogs. My dog can be skittish at times, and initially he did not want to leave the house to go on walks with Natasha. She was very patient, worked with him over several visits, and now he gets excited whenever she comes. She was so patient with him, and it gives me great peace-of-mind knowing that she is there to visit with him on days when I have to work late.

Debbie is great! From the moment she met our little pup, she was eager to help him reach his full potential. She sends daily updates when she visits with him, and when available photos as well. I would highly recommend Debbie to anyone looking for pet walking/sitting services.

Angie had helped me walk my dog Rocky for about a year when I lived in Falls Church. Having a 14 year old shih-tzu, I was grateful to have a reliable and caring and dog walker. Angie was always flexible and went above and beyond to try to accommodate my (sometimes hectic) schedule or when I had to leave town. Rocky was in great hands, she gave him extra TLC when his paw was healing from an infection and she was very perceptive and will let you know if Rocky didn't seem himself. Very professional and highly recommend her for any of your pet care needs.

Stephanie was wonderful. She came and stayed at our home for one week, and fed our dog and cat, and did the walking of the dog as indicated and emptying of the cat box as instructed. In addition to doing what she was hired for, for a very affordable price, Stephanie was also very responsive to questions before she began sitting for us, and was available to talk over the phone during the time that we were away. In addition to all of this, she was available for an introductory "meet and greet." We liked her immediately and plan to use her services again in the future!

Vicki was a wonderful trainer who managed to help us train our 1yo rescue, Penny. She provided tips, advice, and made amazing suggestions to practice while not in training sessions. In the course of 6 weeks, Penny learned several obedience commands (stay, leave it, wait, etc) as well as tricks (sit, down, paw, crawl, etc.) Penny was difficult to teach when we first got her and although I have had a dog before, I have never had a puppy/younger pup and she wasn’t a good listener until we saught help from Paw Patrol of VA, LLC. Vicki was very flexible with our schedule, understanding of our ongoing frustrations in trying to teach her obedience, and was able to help us change our body language and tone to teach Penny what we wanted her to do. After the first 2 sessions, Penny recognized Vicki when she came to our home and LOVED school (mostly because she loves attention, praise, and training treats). I am so thankful my husband and I agreed to get a trainer for Penny and we really lucked out with Vicki. Thank you Vicki, Brittany and Sadie for your kindness. We would gladly hire Vicki again in the future and recommend her to others in the area!

I couldn't be happier with the training that we've received from Social Tailwaggers. Jodie, our trainer. is so patient and very knowledgeable. The first time we met, we discussed what training I was interested in and what goals we were trying to achieve for my dog, Cooper. Cooper was around 10-11 months old when we began our first training session. She immediately began to introduce new skills and commands to work on training Cooper. After each lesson, Jodie sends a detailed email outlining all of the skills we worked on and suggestions to help with practicing on my own. Jodie was also helpful with recommendations on types of toys and feeding bowls to help with the energy level of my dog. I would highly recommend Social Tailwaggers to anyone who needs help training a new puppy or an older dog. It is well worth the time, money and effort to have a well trained dog and not only are you going to have a well trained, better behaved dog, it's also a lot of fun time spent with your dog.

I am a Dog Trainer in the Northern Virginia area. For the past four years, after I am done training with my clients, I send them over to Cupid Pets. I looked around at other dog walking and pet sitting companies and none of them meet my standards like Cupid Pets has for my dogs and previous clients.

Ray and Christine of Christine's Pets have been walking my dog, Sofie, for almost a year now. During this time, they have not only become friends, but family. I refer to them as Sofie's aunt and uncle. Very responsive to my sometimes flexible schedule, I receive photos and a daily hand written message detailing Sofie's activities. It is so comforting to know that they are here for me. Sofie doesn't always want to walk and Ray will play with her or just hang out and let her sniff around. A most important point is that they LOVE animals!

Karen has been walking my youngest dog and taking out my other 3 dogs for the past 2 years. She has been absolutely wonderful and loves and treats my dogs as if they are her own. She's also done an extended overnight stay while we were out of town. I wouldn't trust anymore more than I trust Karen. She has been amazing and gives me daily updates as well to how everything went!

Tristan is so great with our dogs! When the time for their walk with Tristan is near, they sit attentively and wait for hi to come. He's also firm but relaxed, which I makes him a good leader. That's key for us, because ONE of our guys thinks he's the boss! We've never had a dog walking service before, and Tristan was our first and will be our only, for as long as we can have him :) You can trust them with your woofies!

I returned to my home in Virginia after having been out West for a few years, caring for my parents. Upon my return, I learned that my closest friend had just weeks to live. She wanted me to be with her. At the same time, my little 18 month old dog was not well. We still didn't know exactly what was wrong, but with increasing frequency, she had severe bleeding out of both ends! It turned out to be a serious autoimmune disorder, and she must receive pretty close attention because symptoms are subtle until it is a life-threatening emergency. I was torn, knowing that my friend had two cats and I couldn't take my dog with me. She requires medications and a special, home cooked diet. I placed a notice for an emergency, 24-hour pet sitter who could take my dog in their home, because she wasn't well enough to be alone. I received many responses. I chose Nikki partly because of the caring message she left me, and I was impressed with her medical background. Upon meeting Nikki, I felt reassured, and appreciated her directness and honesty. I felt very little trepidation about leaving my little dog in her care for what could have been a few weeks. Finding Nikki was a gift. Trusting her with my little dog came easy by the second day. She always made time to talk with me when I called to check on my pup, and the details she told me helped me to know that she was keeping a close watch on the little one. Her love for animals is very apparent, and she notices everything. Nikki has, on several occasions, taken my dog into their home on very short notice, and on other occasions, has kept her a day or two longer than planned, again without prior notice. (A couple of times, my home cooked meals for the dog ran out, and Nikki cooked up a batch without being asked.) Nikki is very knowledgeable concerning medical issues and treatments, and I NEVER worry when my dog is with her. My pup enjoys every second with Nikki and her family, and it's a special treat for her to go there. She is well socialized during those visits, with Nikki's family and seven pets, with neighbors and friends, and with other pets that Nikki sometimes has at her home. I have gifted my dog with a 24-hour stay at Nikki's home on quite a few occasions, even when I didn't need a pet sitter! Nikki has far exceeded my expectations of a pet sitter, and I've always received from her so much more than my money's worth. I highly, highly recommend Nikki. She is skilled, patient, reliable, honest and caring; she notices every detail, and she LOVES animals! I'm so thankful to have found her.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

How much do dog walkers charge?

The cost of dog walking depends on several factors including length and frequency of dog walks, the number of dogs on the walk, distance to your house, and any additional services you request. The national average cost range for a dog walk is $10-$20, but that price will vary based on where you live in the country and the regional cost of living and doing business.

The longer the dog walk, the higher your costs will be. Dog walkers offer a range of walk lengths, from 15-minute potty breaks to long hikes of 120 minutes or more. For example, a dog walker may charge $15 for a 15-minute walk and $35 for a 35-minute walk. Requesting that your dog be the only animal on the walk will typically mean a higher cost than if you permit your dog to be walked in a pack of dogs. You may be able to get a discounted rate if you have more than one dog to be walked. For example, a professional dog walker may charge $28 for one dog or $33 for two dogs on a 60-minute walk. If you need additional help — like feeding the dogs or giving them medication — dog walkers may be able to provide this service at an additional fee. Dog walkers may charge higher rates for walking your dogs on holidays.
