Walter and his associate Mauricio arrived on time and very quickly were able to find a solution to our drywall issue. Walter quoted a price and Mauricio very quickly was able to take care of us. Great service and I have to give them extra thanks for doing it on a Sunday!

Cesar did a great job -- prompt, courteous, efficient, and professional. The project of mounting our flat-screen TV on the wall turned out to be a little more complicated than he had anticipated when the wall was wood paneling and not drywall, but he had the right tools with him. My HDMI connector cables also proved to be too short for the new set-up, but Cesar had longer ones with him, for a modest additional charge. Highly recommended!

Herbert is outstanding, and I say that after having worked with many contractors in the last year, including several found through Thumbtack. We worked with him to convert a garage into a bedroom and were continually impressed by his honesty, punctuality, diligence and professionalism. He takes pride in his work and work ethic, and it is a true pleasure to do business with him.

Carlos was very professional and he was also true to his word. Thank appreciated his flexibility and willingness to tackle my drywall project and exercise care throughout the repair of two ceiling holes created when I had an old light fixture replaced by an electrician.

They did an great job with the Drywall and Painting for our office. Job was completed on time and satisfactory to our request. We even had last minutes changes but this still did not stop the job from being completed on time. I have referred them to others as well. Job well done.

Dave is very communicative, fairly priced, and does great drywall work. We hired him to cut open our ceiling for a spray foam insulation install, and then patch. All went well except containing the drywall dust. It's a messy job and I was warned about some spillover, but the amount of drywall dust on our belongings and airborne into other parts of the house was way too high. The protective tarping was incomplete on the first visit and poorly done on the follow-up visit. With a little more attention to detail a huge mess could have been avoided. All in all though, Dave is a good hire and an excellent communicator who takes the time to understand the job and do what he says.

Dennis is the first contractor I have worked with that actually called me back. He is very prompt and very professional. His crew was very respectful of my property and cleaned up the job site at the end of each day. Eugene is one of the best carpenters I have had the pleasure to work with and the deck he built for us is the envy of the neighborhood.

I had a leak that needed to be fixed, a bay window that needed to be repainted and calked and drywall that needed to be redone. Initially i shopped estimates from different contractors - every one of them telling me the leak was from a different place. I ended up going with L&N because Sam seemed like a straightforward, honest guy and was also more affordable than all the other estimates i received. He identified the leak immediately, checked multiple times to make sure it was fixed, repaired my drywall and re painted my bay window. He wore booties the whole time while inside which my wife appreciated, he cleaned up all dust and debris and provided receipts for all materials. The workmanship was great and my bay window and drywall look like new. He also warranties his work. Highly recommend him for any general contractor needs you may have.

The 5th Genration Group recently did a minor renovation on our condo; the quality of the drywall and finishing work was excellent. The staff was neat and professional. The group also did an outstanding ceramic tile installation on an existing fireplace. We will definitely work with them in the future.

This was our second time using Thumbtack and it was a great experience. We received multiple quotes for drywall work in our kitchen and bedroom to repair damage from a plumbing leak. The Langway brothers provided the best quote and had the experience and reviews to make us comfortable using them. We had guests coming in town so even though it was the holidays they rearranged their schedule and managed to come the very next day. Paul Langway performed the work and exceeded our expectations. In addition to doing a spotless repair job he also fixed some of the underlying issues which were not part of the original quote. He kindly did this free of charge. To have a contractor stick to their original quote and then do work above and beyond without charging more is pretty rare these days. It was also a pleasure to meet Paul and have him in our home as he is a great guy with which to interact. We will definitely use them again.

Matt tiled my bathroom walls and floor. He was very fair in his pricing for his excellent quality of work. He showed up every day for work exactly on time and worked hard to make sure I was happy with his work every step of the way. Of all my years in working with general contractors, Matt's professionalism was my best experience. In terms of his skills with tile, he fixed existing problems with my bathroom in terms of level, tile placement, and severe lippage. When he was done with his work, my bathroom was beautiful! The tile placement gave the bathroom a better sense of space, the floor and walls were level, and there was no lippage. He suggested some aesthetic choices which I went with and the end result was beautiful. Finally, Matt was honest with me in terms of work specialty that he was not comfortable with; that is, I had some aesthetic choices in mind, but he was straightforward with me and said he was unable to do that. I appreciate that honesty, whereas some contractors says they can complete certain special work when, in fact, it's a stretch and does not come out with the quality we hope for. All in all, I would recommend Matt for tile work. He is a strong 5-stars in terms of quality of work, professionalism, and, on a personal level, he is just a very nice man and is easy to talk to.

Drywall repair. Work was done efficiently and for a very fair price. Additional materials had to be picked up which delayed the work start slightly, but the quality of work was very good. Would hire again.

GET Home Improvement and Cleaning LLC completed both inside and outside the house projects. Inside the house, GET Home demoed, framed, drywalled, sistered a joist brace, painted, completed the trim, installed hardwood railing, doors, and corrected the toilet connection. In all three county inspections (framing, pre-conseal, final), Arlington county inspectors reviewed and passed GET’s interior work in the first inspection. Outside the house, GET Home power washed the large patio, stripped and painted a wooden front porch cover and cleaned the property. Overall, I was very satisfied with GET Home’s work and professionalism.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.
