Your burning questions: answered

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Do electricians offer remote or virtual services?

While electrical work is typically performed in person, you may come across some electrician profiles that state the pro is offering remote services. If you do, contact local electricians to discuss your particular project and what type of remote services they may offer.

I got in over my head on a DIY project and posted it on Thumbtack. Ryan came out the next morning on a weekend to bail me out. He was extremely professional, efficient and a genuinely nice guy. On top of that he was also the most affordable of the electricians that responded with quotes. 5 stars in my book. I will definitely keep his card for future projects.

Needed Compass to install 3 pendant lights. Response to request was very quick and he was able to perform a timely installation. Very impressed with the quality of his work. He took his time with the measurements and was very precise with all of his work. Very neat and cleaned up completely at the end of the job. Very reasonable price(really less that other electricians in the area). Would definitely hire him again.

We had a full remodel of a room in our basement. The team did a great job fixing the mistakes of the previous electrician who built our home and added several new outlets and a new higher amperage circuit to our panel box. They also installed 6 new flush mount LED lights in the room. The results are great! I look forward to using Square Electrical again on a bigger remodel of our home.

Edwin was great! He and his staff were ready to do the job immediately the same day and did an excellent job, improvising like pros when issues came up. Also, his prices beat the competition in the area by at least 25%. I highly recommend Edwin and crew for all your electrical needs. I know I’ll be using him for my upcoming Ring and Tesla charger installs, among other jobs. No need to shop around anymore, I found my electrician!

We wanted to add lighting and receptacles in our basement plus lighting on our deck and a receptacle in an upstairs closet to power a small refrigerator and coffee maker. After sending out our request on Thumbtack, Jose responded within minutes, came by the house to review scope, provided price and committed to time to install the work all within 2 days. He is an extremely competent electrician and handyman. He made real practical suggestions that saved us money and added value to the electrical work we had desired. He communicated via phone and text through out the process keeping us informed and met all his commitments. We are very satisfied and will definitely use Jose for our next project.

I am very disappointed with this service provided. It doesn't deserve any stars. I had a problem with a switch that tripping the circuit breaker. He replaced the switch and the breaker and charged my $200. few minutes after he left, the problem was not fixed (came back). After contacting him, He said he will be back the following day, but he didn't. I kept messaging and calling him for 3 days with no response. Today, I hired another technician who said that the new installed breaker is not with the county code and needs to be replace. I had to pay $456 more to undo what he had done. I don't recommend this guy. You (none electrician) probably can do it better job than him.

I was really impressed with the initial correspondence with VIVA Contractors. In fact, the night before the job, they confirmed and even said they'd arrive an hour early. Jump to the morning of... I woke up and got ready early to greet them, but they didn't arrive. An hour and twenty minutes passed, still nothing. So I reached out. Apparently the electrician had a family emergency, which is obviously fine, as life happens! A phone call or email would have been appreciated though. We rescheduled for the next day, and they were right on time. They installed a ceiling fan and foyer chandelier. The fan was fine, though unfortunately they broke a piece of glass from the square chandelier, which needed to be replaced. They were great about being honest and upfront about it, and said it was on them, and they'd replace it. Awesome. The only difficulty was in getting them to schedule a time to come back with the glass. I called, texted and messaged for 3 days before I got a definitive answer from them. Once we finally got in touch, they came and replaced the glass without issue. Overall, it was a mixed experience. The job was done and we have no complaints after the fact. It was a bit frustrating getting to completion though.
