Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get the outside of your house painted?

You can expect to pay around $2,535 to get the outside of your house painted, though this cost will increase with larger house sizes (and decrease with smaller ones). The average hourly rate for exterior painters is $45 and ranges from $25-$75.

Wood, brick, stucco, vinyl, aluminum and stone each have their own set of demands. Contact exterior painters near you to get a detailed cost estimate for your house.

How often should you paint your house's exterior?

Expert opinion is mixed, but the general range is five to 10 years. However, this depends on many factors. Houses in harsh climates with extreme temperatures, lots of dust or ice or intense sunlight may need more frequent paint jobs than those in temperate climates. Also, wood houses will need new paint more often due to the changes within the wood itself. You should also consider painting the outside of your house if you plan to sell it.

What is the best exterior house paint?

Acrylic paints are generally considered good options for today’s home exterior paint jobs. You can also choose an oil-based or latex (water-based) paint. Also, look into specialty paints for your doors, roof, gutters, siding and other exterior surfaces.

How many coats of paint does the exterior of a house need?

Your house’s exterior will likely need two coats of paint. With two coats, your house will look more even and solid in color and will be better protected from moisture and the elements. The painting should always occur over a primed and well-prepared surface.

What colors should I paint my house exterior?

You have many options when it comes to paint colors. For example, an off-white creates a traditional look, and it looks great with a bright door to contrast it. Yellow is a happy color that, while light blue is reminiscent of an oceanfront style. Gray houses are also on trend, providing a classy and neutral tone that remains warm and inviting.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Is it worth it to hire a painter to paint my house's exterior?

It is nearly always worth it to hire a painter to paint your home’s exterior. While you may feel comfortable painting a small, one-story home, anything with multiple stories, dormers or other complexities are best left to a pro.

Additionally, it’s best to let the pros handle older homes. Any time extensive prep work is needed — such as repairing chipping, bubbling, cracking or peeling paint, or fixing caulking and substrate issues — a pro can  handle it.

Can I paint my own house exterior?

While you may choose to paint a door, ground-level window trim and other parts of your house’s exterior, it’s really a job best left to the professionals. One of the main reasons is experience. An experienced painter knows how to handle the prep work, spot problems and identify sources of future trouble, all while getting the job done more efficiently. They are also experienced with spending long hours on tall ladders. If you want high-quality work, it’s best to hire a professional painter near you

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

We hired I Paint USA to paint the exterior of our home a couple months ago and we couldn't be happier with the end result. We were having a party in less than two weeks and asked if they could have the project completed prior to that time. Marcelo was extremely accommodating and he and his crew were able to start the following week. In three short days they were able to pressure clean and pretreat the exterior, fix any cracks and cosmetic imperfections, prime and paint the larger areas, paint the trim in a contrasting color, and paint four exterior doors and the metal window frames black. They used high quality exterior paint from Sherman Williams with a 30 year warranty. The price was very fair, especially for the quality of the work they did. I would recommend them to my friends and family without hesitation. I am very happy that we chose I Paint USA for the job!

Earl (owner) was a pleasure to work with. He is very friendly and communicates well, and his prices are affordable. He painted my entire house exterior of 2,000 sq ft, including the driveway, walkways, and overhangs, and didn't miss a single detail. I will definitely hire again for my next project - it's beautiful! Thank you Earl!!

The end result was ok but I’m definitely not happy with this company. Took over a month to finish painting the exterior of my house. Everything was painted over without fixing the walls. I had to tell them to fix the walls and repaint as planned. I had to constantly ask to fix and repaint or retouch the areas that were not done well. They left stains all over that they were supposed to remove. Even that part was not done well and I had to do it myself. Regular trash was thrown in the recycle bin and was never removed as promised. Overall messy and not very professional work. There was a young crew doing the job. They were nice but not supervised as they should have. Would not recommend, would not re-hire.

Do not hire that company, except if you want to loose time, loose money, get lied to, be giving excuses after excuses on why they are not coming to do the job. To make a long story short, i contacted James on 06-21-2021 for a quote for exterior paint of my house including replacing some damaged wood, washer pressure clean the roof and patio and paint the fence. He was really reactive came the following day and gave us a reasonable estimate (not the highest one, not the lowest one either). I was happy because finally had found someone who seems to be professional. We agreed on the price, sign an agreement on 06-24-2021 and a wire the 30% down payment that same with a starting date after 07-04-2021. He send his guys to washer pressure the roof and patios; then around 07-10-2021 he send another of his employee to measure how much would need to be replaced. His employee notice some termite damage and it was agreed that i needed to have a termite inspection before putting new wood in. So far i was super happy with the service, then i don't know what happen but that is when everything went wrong. On 07-14-2021 i contacted him in order to schedule the wood replacement as i needed to then schedule the termite treatment and then have his guys come back to finish painting the house. He did not get back to me; on 07-17-2021 i again reached out and left a message, i was told his guys will be there on 07-20-2021. No one showed up. And he started giving some excuses: 1st one was that he needed to finish 2 other jobs, 2nd one was that he was sick. on 07-24-2021 i got tired on being lied to and i sent him a message with 2 option, part ways amicably and reimburse the difference between the down and the cost of what was done, or give me a date to complete the job. He apologized and told me that he was going to refund me by end of day... Guess what i still have not received my refund and now he is not even responding to my messages... Next step will be the small claim court because i really don't appreciate being take for an idiot.
