We hired Sam C. for face painting and balloon artistry services for our Community Fall Festival. The artists were both professional, kind to all the children, and created fantastic face paint designs. The balloon artist designs were so unique and often looked complicated. Absolutely what we were hoping for! We will definitely hire them again. Only suggestion would be for them to arrive and start set up 15 minutes prior to the event.

Ambika is a wonderful henna artist that replied quickly and was accommodating and efficient with scheduling an appointment. She did her work in her home which was very clean and lovely. She was fast and precise, giving me a gorgeous hand/arm henna design identical to what I wanted. She uses great smelling products, too, and the henna lasted for about a week. I got LOTS of compliments.

Razia is a great henna artist. She did the henna for my wedding, and we were extremely pleased with her skill and her attitude. I have received so many compliments on the way she worked the details, and everyone who was at the mehndi night were very happy with Raiza's designs. She is quick and proficient. For the guests she took only about 3-4 minutes per hand. probably in 6-7 hours she did my bridal mehndi plus mehndi for about 40-50 of our guests. She is friendly, professional, creative, and charming. Her pricing is extremely reasonable as well. Her Henna had really good stain. Everyone's henna looked absolutely wonderful. She also took the time to explain the process to guests who were unfamiliar with henna. I would definitely recommend her if you have a wedding or any other event coming up!

I'm writing this under my boyfriend's account but I am a 39 year old female who loves henna! I have had henna done on my hands twice now by Shabnam and she is fabulous. Both times I went to her house to have it done and she could not have been more accommodating. The work she does is brilliant and it is just an over all great experience. I highly recommend her!

Hiba came over to apply bridal henna for me on my hands and feet - it was a great rate for bridal henna and nice designs as well. Once I completed my bridal henna, 15 friends of mine wanted to get their henna done as well - they got more simple designs on their hands but everyone was satisfied and liked their henna. Hiba was flexible with my needs and was very easy to work with!

Chelsea did an absolutely phenomenal job on the white henna for my wedding. She spoke with me the entire time (3 1/2 hours!) Which helped the time fly by. She treated me so kindly and my dad even asked if I had known her for a while because she spoke to me like a long time friend. However, it was only the first time we met, and we had only spoken a few times before the wedding. I will be adding pictures of the henna once my photographer is done preparing them (should be within the next 6 weeks). I highly recommend Cardamom & Clove Henna!!!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.

How much does it cost to get a henna tattoo?

Nationally, the average cost to hire a henna artist is between $100 and $180 per hour. Rates will vary by location and the experience of the individual henna artist; it’s possible to find artists who charge less than $50 per hour. Some henna artists charge an hourly rate, especially for corporate events or festivals where they are providing service to multiple people within an hour. They may also charge flat rates for bridal and wedding services or special events. Here are some examples of average cost:

      • Hourly rate: $65-$85 or more per hour. Price is dependent on event size and number of attendees.
      • Starting rate for minimal palm designs: $15 or more.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands and wrist and bottom of feet up to the ankle: $175.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the mid-arm and feet to above the ankle: $300.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the elbow and the feet to the knee: $450.
