After studying French through Arlington County Adult Education for two sessions over the past few months, my understanding of grammar was fairly good but my pronunciation and ability to speak were horrible, so I decided to pursue a tutor. After an initial session where she evaluated my learning goals and needs, Zahra developed a plan to improve my French speaking in time for a trip this coming summer. Zahra introduced me to important pronunciation rules that were not covered by the class I attended, and she immediately began helping me learn some basic and intermediate conversation phrases and topics that I will be able to use on my trip. Her approach is very practical and tailored to my specific needs. I plan to continue learning from Zahra after my trip to improve even more. Zahra is an excellent teacher whom I would recommend to anyone wanting to learn French at any level. She provides great handouts to make learning fun and easy, and she gives just the right amount and right type of homework to reinforce the concepts from the tutoring sessions. Zahra is the best!

I am pleased to highly recommend Nick Pino, who is my tutor for Spanish. Having needed to enter an intermediate Spanish course after several years away from the language, the completion of which is a graduation requirement for a top-10 international relations program, Nick is working with me to not only meet this requirement, but also to identify and hone the areas necessary to mastering proficiency. From our very first session, he immediately made it a priority to take the time to understand my unique, individual needs. Not surprisingly, I've found that my confidence with Spanish grows every time Nick and I meet, whether over coffee or in a more formal setting, and studying under him has been the best investment I've made in my personalized, life-long learning path -- to include the (traditional) classroom/institutional settings, which cost far more! Ultimately, when it comes to learning Spanish, Nick is the consummate language professional. He works with you to improve your knowledge, sharpen your language skills and transform you into a Spanish-speaker. Nick Pino is the real deal! - Ry

Attending the professors class was a wonderful experience as she is passionate about what she teaches in her sign language classes. I think the lessons were easy to follow and she encourages her students and definitely wants her students to learn. She is a patient and understanding individual and devotes her time and attention to her profession. Anyone whether seasoned or novice will benefit from her expertise. I thoroughly enjoyed having her as a teacher and can't wait to take more classes from her. She meets you where you are and encourages/helps all who come in contact with her. She is definitely a wonderful teacher and encourager. All will benefit from her.

Patricia, has been tutoring me for the past month. I am a true beginner!!! This is my first time every studying spanish or trying to learn a new language. Patricia and I meet at a local coffee shop once a week. Patricia is very punctual, always prepared and super patient. She is very thorough and has a very calm delivery in respect to the lesson. Her cool and calm demeanor helps prevent me from getting frustrated during my tutoring sessions. She also gives timely positive reinforcement which i find is key in a classroom type of environment. She will utilize different teaching approaches when necessary to help me grasp the information. I really enjoy my sessions with Partricia and I look forward to continuing them. I highly recommend Patricia. To all you new spanish speakers I say "Buena Suerte!!"

Since March 2018 I have been taking one-on-one weekly lessons with Shaoling Liu. During that time, I have gained much more confidence in my ability to pronounce tones, which is critical to being understood. She also places a premium on listening to conversations at the speed of “regular Chinese-language speakers” speaking. She is very enthusiastic about teaching Chinese, and is always willing to do more for the students who take the initiative. For example, if you want to write materials, she will correct them; if you record your own speaking she will listen to it; and in these cases she will give you feedback between classes. She has grown up using simplified Chinese, but she knows the traditional characters, which is essential for what I want to learn. One of her previous students is now working in Taiwan. I recommend her to individuals interested in learning to speak and understand Chinese.

My roommate and I contacted Julia to teach us basic Russian for our travels to Ukraine and Moldova this summer. To date, Julia has provided us with proper instruction, lesson plans, and homework. She has become our mentor and very reliable resource as we prepare for our journey. Julia is very professional and can present her material on all levels, which I can attest to since she teaches the two of us at the same time. She is a kind and genuine person who is always upbeat. It is with great privilege to recommend Julia’s services to anyone who is looking to explore or further their understanding of the Russian language.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
