Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does landscaping cost?

The price of landscaping varies widely due to the range of choices that can be made, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $320 and $20,000 for your landscaping work. The national average cost for a landscaping project is $2,600.

Factors like the choice of plants, the amount and type of hardscaping, the square footage of your landscaped area, and the region you live in will have a significant effect on your landscaping cost.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

How much is it to install a sprinkler system?

On average, it costs between $90 and $800 to install a sprinkler system. Most people pay an average cost of $225, but prices can reach as high as $1,320-$5,650.

The cost of labor in your region, the type of sprinkler system you want to install, the size of your lawn, the number of zones and sprinkler heads, and many other factors can impact how much you end up paying for a new sprinkler system. For a more accurate estimate, contact several lawn sprinkler system installation companies and ask for a price quote.

What is landscape design?

Landscaping design refers to the art of analyzing an existing landscape, planning how to transform it through flora and fauna design and working with a client to ensure goals are met. Landscape designers may completely transform an outdoor space or make minor modifications to enhance it. They may also call for grading and the construction of hardscaping surfaces like walkways or patios to add to the enjoyment of the space.

Where can you buy landscaping rocks?

You can shop for landscaping rocks from a variety of different sources. The first option is large chain retail stores specializing in home improvement and gardening. Often, landscaping rocks like slate and other slabs arrive on pallets and are sold in bulk, giving you a great deal. Your local landscaping store also carries rocks, and you may even have a stone or quarry seller nearby who can sell you the rocks you need. When in doubt, contact landscaping companies near you to see if they have rocks you can purchase.

What is landscaping?

Landscaping is the intentional placement and maintenance of living plants on an area of land or in your yard. This can include trees, lawn, flowers, bushes and other plant life and often incorporates mulch and other organic matter. The primary purpose of landscaping is to provide beauty to the house or building it surrounds.

Many landscaping companies also offer design, architecture and construction services. For example, they can help you design a yard that incorporates a patio, deck, pool, fire pit, lighting, walkways, retaining walls and more.

Who do I hire to install a new sprinkler system?

You can hire a lawn sprinkler installation company, technician or contractor to install your new sprinklers. Start by searching on Thumbtack. Simply enter your zip code, and compare the top-rated local professionals. Evaluate them by reading their customer reviews, and view their photos to get an idea of their work and expertise. Make sure to double-check licensing requirements in your state, and look for credentials on each pro’s profile. Finish your search by contacting at least three different pros and comparing their price quotes.

How often should lawn sprinkler heads be replaced?

The rate of replacing your sprinkler heads depends on the quality of the part. Inexpensive sprinkler heads may be more attractive upfront, but keep in mind that they’re likely to need replacement more often. Spending more money on higher-quality heads may save you not only on parts but also on the cost to bring a repair technician out. Sprinkler heads typically last between 10 and 14 years.

Anthony with Duval Irrigation installed a new zone by the pool and was able to balance the rest of the system adjusting placement and location of many heads. The system is large, has 8 zones because of the size of the property. His attention to detail and knowledge of how to correct the problem is amazing. The system is now working flawlessly. Anthony has many years of experience and was able to get a large system back up and running with over 50 lbs of pressure. The system is once again throwing water correctly over the entire property. No more dry spots, hot spots or burnt areas. He even reprogrammed the clock and adjusted the pump. The cost was exactly what he communicated and the results exceeded my picky expectations. He is now my go to company for all my irrigation needs. Good job Duval Irrigation!!!!

The irrigation system was serviced very well. The price was the same as proposal. I was educated along the process and informed of all work that was done. If additional work was necessary the tech took time to explain why and ask permission I highly recommend this company.

Somehow the Thumbtack system had a glitch and gave this AMAZING COMPANY A "1" STAR when I gave them 5 Stars. Honestly, if I could give this company 10 STARS I would! Out of all of the companies that I have dealt with on Thumbtack.... Hanlon's Landscape is the best! I highly recommend them over all landscape and irrigation companies. Not only they provide the best service, but they are very honest and going to give the best price out there! I had a bad irrigation company that treated me like crap, but Hanlon's Lanscape stepped up to the plate and took care of me. You wont go wrong choosing this company! I promise you that! Thank you Hanlon's for being there, your advice, and most importantly your honesty!

Action installed a new irrigation system at my home. Unlike other estimates, they were honest and up front about the use of my current pump. They highly recommend a pump upgrade and they were right. Action was in constant email communication with me until I had a new well drilled. I want the install after the well was installed and they also encouraged it. Once I had a date for well, I was able schedule the irrigation installation within a week. It was a smooth install except at the end when they were going to connect the electricity (JEA had a power outage). They were back in two days to complete the work. I have excellent placement of the sprinkler heads because I am not wasting water on sideways or the driveway. Excellent company!

He needs to either commit to this job or his real Day job. He does not come when he says he will. He needs to learn to be professional and keep to his appointments times as HE makes them . I did not request the time. The first time something comes up it's understandable after more it shows a lack of professionalism or care for the customers time schedule. He did not do a final walkthrough with me, it was dark out, after 9pm, but once he got his checks he was out of here. I had to dig my Hunter sprinkler box with the instructions out of my dumpster and figure out how the system works on a damp garbage stained booklet, as he decided to throw it away?! Warranty and all. Why.? I had to call him to find put where it and the new keys were. That aside, the problem came when I called to ask him to come back to check on a head he replaced that will not retract and is a safety hazard. Tripped on it twice. He did not show up when he said he would. I had to text and call him. Said he didnt get off his job in time ( his real job) and his phone was charging in his truck! I rearranged MY schedule to meet his & he cant be bothered to let me know what's up. I specifically asked him if he could make sure nothing comes up this time and he still didnt show. His replies were rude and offered no assistance to fix the issue but kept going on about what he did do on the job. That cost me $369.50 But he doesnt feel I deserve him to fix the head because I'm not happy he can't show up on time. I have to hire another company to check out his work and fix the head. Dont trust his work now, if I can't trust him to show up on time. Pick a job to do and do it. Real job with some other irrigation company or your self employed business. You aren't able to do both, regardless of your reviews. When I asked him if he was going to show up or call me or should I respond to Thumbtacks request for his job review? He said he doesnt use Thumbtack anymore or care about reviews. See photo Do not hire this guy unless you dont care when he comes and dont care about the job being completed. He has lots of excuses. Call someone else. P.S. There were no irate outbursts just normal frustration at an undependable contractor. All screen shots of his rude texts have been provided to Thumbtack research and complaint department. Dont bother with this guy. His work may or may not be worth the price but his attitude is not. Find someone dependable.
