Ed was professional and a delight to work with and I would hire him again. Our basement was a mess after a long, slow leak left destroyed basebords and mold. He and his team efficiently cleaned up the mess and treated all surfaces to prevent mold from regrowing. They were even kind enough to make adjustments to their plans to accommodate our needs.

Val is the nicest. Came in, looked at what needed to be done, and gave me an estimate. I would say it was reasonable, as I have no idea how much mold remediation costs, but I can say "I was NOT crying all the way to the bank." The sub-contractors he had working with him were also very nice, friendly and personable. If you ever need to have mold removed, Val (and crew) is your guy.

Our experience with Mr. James and his team was very pleasant. All of the guys were very knowledgeable and professional. They handled all permits and inspections necessary to complete the project. We noticed an infestation of mold growth in one of our properties. We were already contemplating remodeling this area of the basement anyway. We decided to not only remediate the mold but also to hang new drywall throughout the entire basement, install about 13 recessed lights with smart motion switches, slate tile flooring, and rough in and install a full bath in the space. James came in and offered my husband and I a lot of different options to reach our desired goal beyond the mold remediation. He also did the bathroom design, and suggested some beautiful tile combinations and we loved them all. In short we decided to go with James to do the work and the project went flawless. Very professional, clean within reason during a renovation, and very organized and personable. He kept us informed at every stage and there were no surprises. They completed the project in about10 days including county inspections. James followed up with us a month after the job was completed to make sure that everything ok. Great customer service!! We will definitely be using Unlimited Resources in the near future and have recommended James and his team to several people already.

Dan and his team were very knowledgeable, thorough and did an excellent job with mold remediation in our crawl space. They were very professional, courteous and punctual. Dan was quick to schedule the work and the cost was very reasonable. Whenever I had a question or concern, he answered it promptly and was thorough in his answer or explanation so I had full understanding. We no longer have any mold or musty smell in our home or crawl space. I highly recommend him, his team and their services.

I am so glad I chose Mold Removal Company! They are very professional and really do quality work. I am new to needing to address mold and they walked me through everything. Jake came out to do some testing first and was very thorough. He even came out on a Sunday for us so we didn’t need to take off work. He answered all of my questions and you could tel he took pride in his work. I received a copy of the lab results which also explained the findings in detail. Once we knew we needed to address some mold, it was so simply to schedule Todd to come out and do the remediation work. He was also very thorough and kind. He cleaned up everything completely. If I ever have to do this again (hopefully I won’t) I will definitely use Mold Removal Company again. (Photo is after mold treatment)

The team at Restoration 1 was very professional and thorough in performing mold remediation and removal of water damage in our master bathroom. Cory explained the process clearly during the estimate and provided a very detailed list of work that would be done. Patrick and Darin worked hard the entire 10 hour day removing the water damage and mold. The price was fair and the work was complete very quickly. I hope we do not need Restoration 1's service in the future, but would not hesitate to call them again if we do.

I hired VIP Steemer after another contractor, who was not on Thumbtack, took the first couple of insurance checks and walked off the job. With the way VIP Steemer came in and corrected a very complicated situation for our family, Mr. Iwundu and his team proved to be a God send for us! When VIP Steemer came to the job, the remediation had not been started and water damage and mold were still on walls, cabinetry and flooring. VIP Steemer got to work promptly re-negotiating with insurance companies and starting a proper and thorough remediation. In the middle of the remodel phase, 3 ft. of snow collapsed our roof. Before any further damage could be done to the home, Mr. Iwundu deftly handled the complex insurance problems and quickly repaired damage done by the snow. The remodel was beautiful. The workmanship was excellent. The materials they bought the job far exceeded my expectations. Above all I appreciated the honesty with which Mr. Iwundu and his team dealt with us. Where there were old piping and fixtures that needed replacing, the VIP Steemer team pro-actively identified and fixed problems. They repaired or replaced where it was needed instead of covering up or "patching-over" things that we as homeowners could have easily missed. Because of their thoroughness, honesty, and skill, VIP Steemer took what was a very difficult time for my family and me and helped to make our days a lot brighter!

My daughter had continuous headaches, and noise bleeds, New Beginnings, came out with in 24 hours of our call, they did not find any visible mold, or any service they could sell us, but after their visual inspection, they ruled out everything but our pet guinea pig. New Beginnings Restoration recommended us to use a hygienist, who discovered through testing that our pet guinea pig, was the cause of my daughter's illness. We give away her pet guinea pig, and my daughter's Health turned around with in a few days! Although New Beginnings did not make any money with us, our daughter is much much better due to their unselfish referral! This company has a lot of integrity, I would use them again! My assumption is the average person doesn't know much about drywall repair. I say this because when you are quoted a price of a repair you will feel one way or the other about the quote. I would say that for what was paid I feel like I was "stealing" from Romberto based on the quality of work these guys completed. First of all the guys stated they would be on location at 7:30. They were here at 7:32. Based on where I live I will take that 10 times out of 10. Much better than a cable providers or appliance delivery that give you 2 - 4 hour windows and still show up late. They had their drop clothes and coverings to cover the furniture in the room. and they taped up all the surrounding areas to keep it clear and clean. The area of the repair was approximately 3' x 4' and than a separate fist sized hole. Entirely different types of repairs but these guys knocked it out with no problem. I will be hiring these guys again for any future jobs that I have. Thanks Romberto!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How is a mold test done?

Mold testing can help identify a mold infestation in your home or business. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of test you want done and the number of samples you request. The national average mold inspection cost is $250-$300. The EPA explains that if you have a visible mold problem, in most cases sampling and testing is unnecessary. However, if you have unexplained and potential mold-related illness or can smell mold in your house, mold inspection costs may be a good investment. To avoid unscrupulous testers, the EPA recommends working with a testing agency that adheres to the analytical methods laid out by professional organizations such as the American Industrial Hygiene Association or the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of testing done. Prices can also vary, depending on the size of the home, the number of surface areas to be tested, and the extent of the mold infestation. Here are some examples of mold inspection average costs:

    • Swab testing: $200-$300
      • A professional collects a surface swab from a potentially infested area for testing in a lab. Some professionals have concerns about this being the sole test done because it only gathers a small amount of data from a certain area of the house. That’s why it’s frequently done in conjunction with air cell testing.
    • Air cell testing: $250-$350
      • A professional collects an air sample in the home to measure the amount of mold spores in the air. This test is frequently done in conjunction with swab testing to ensure more complete data. Costs are higher for this test because the equipment required of the contractor is more expensive.
    • Both air cell and swab tests provided by the same company: $400-$600.

    How does mold remediation work?

Mold remediation can eliminate mold colonies from your home or business. Mold is a normal part of daily life, but in wet or humid settings mold can quickly colonize and spread by making spores. Whether visible or hidden, untreated mold can cause real health problems and cause extensive (and expensive) damage to your property. Mold remediation involves killing the mold, removing the dead mold and preventing future mold growth. Here is an example of the steps involved in professional mold remediation:

    • Contain work area and apply negative air pressure HEPA air purifiers to prevent cross-contamination. If spores spread, the colonies can easily regrow elsewhere in your home.
    • Mist an EPA-registered antimicrobial to suspend and kill mold spores.
    • Remove affected building surfaces.
    • Bag and dispose of contaminated materials properly.
    • Treat cavities/underlayment and dehumidify.
    • Abrasively remove dead loose mold.
    • Apply EPA-registered protective sealer.
    • Perform clearance testing.

    Remove containment materials.

    What is a mold remediation?

Mold remediation is the process of identifying and removing unhealthy levels of mold that have colonized in a home, office, school or other building. Over time, if untreated, mold can destroy a home by breaking down cellulose-based materials (like wood or ceiling tiles) and causing a slow and messy decay. In the shorter term, a mold infestation can cause severe health problems. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), mold can trigger respiratory problems, nasal and sinus congestion, eye irritation, nose or throat irritation, skin irritations, problems with your nervous system, and aches and pains. Mold inspection and mold remediation are often requested in tandem, although they are two separate services. Nationally, mold inspection costs range from $250 to $300. If mold has been positively identified in your house, either by visual examination or through mold testing, remediation can safely remove it. Properly trained and equipped professionals use specialized equipment (like vacuums and air scrubbers with HEPA filters) to keep mold spores contained while they remove contaminated materials and treat infested areas with antimicrobial spray. A key component to a successful mold remediation after eliminating the mold is ensuring that the water source that caused the mold infestation is also resolved.

    Can mold grow behind drywall?

Mold can grow behind drywall, in your attic, in the basement, under floors — mold can grow anywhere. The key to controlling mold is controlling moisture and water. If your home has been exposed to excessive water due to flooding or heavy rains, if you have an old home with leaky pipes, or if you live in an area with high humidity, you need to be vigilant about mold. Mold is most easily identified by sight. You may see blooms of mold on furniture, on walls, or along the floor. If you can spot mold, you probably don’t need to test for it and can save on mold inspection costs and direct your energies towards mold remediation. But if you’re not certain, you may need a pro to help you determine whether you have hidden mold. Scent and illness are two potential signs of hidden mold. You may smell anything from a musty earth scent to a foul stench, and you may experience respiratory problems, nasal and sinus congestion, eye irritation, nose or throat irritation, skin irritation, problems with your nervous system, or aches and pains. The national average cost of mold inspection and testing is $250-$300.

How long does it take to get rid of mold in a house?

You can never completely remove mold from your house; a small number of mold spores will always exist indoors and are a natural and helpful part of our world. However, if water or moisture is left unchecked inside your home and mold begins to colonize, it can pose a serious health risk. Mold remediation can quickly and safely remove a mold infestation from your home or office. Depending on the size of your problem, mold remediation might take anywhere from one to seven days (or more) to wipe out the major sources of mold in your home.

Mold growths (colonies) can establish within 24-48 hours, so it is important to act immediately if you have a water spill or leak — especially if you live in a hot or humid climate. If you are past the point of DIY and need professional help, mold remediation teams will come to your location, assess the extent of the mold problem, identify and rectify all water leaks and sources of dampness, identify all mold sources (both visible and hidden), use specialized equipment to contain and prevent migration of mold spores, safely remove contaminated materials, treat infested areas with approved antimicrobial sprays, dehumidify and dry the appropriate areas, and seal areas as needed.
