Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Contact single-item movers near you to find out what services they offer, and get free estimates.

Larro's moving service was a great experience! They arrived in the early part of the moving window and finish our move-out within an hour and a half. After my move-in had a problem with insurance (of my fault for having incorrect paperwork) Larro's office fixed it on-the-fly and within 30 minutes we were back to moving in again. I would highly recommend Larro's moving service to anyone moving!

JP Moving helped me out in a pinch. I needed some help and a vehicle for a short move in the City and they provided helpful service at a reasonable rate in a short turn around time. Thankful!

Quick, professional and I was very pleased with the overall service. The team of 3 came in the morning and moved out a bunch of our stuff really quickly. I'd recommend H & Y to others that have to move within the city of SF.

Luis was very cool and chilled me out during a very stressful time. The crew was professional, no nonsense and efficient. I highly recommend Larro's Moving Services! They handled my disorder with patience and made my move a breeze instead of a disaster disaster.

Tony’s movers did a great job! We chose 3 movers and had a two bedroom move out, with some items going to a new apartment in a different section of SF and some remaining items to storage afterwards. They were very responsive to my questions on the app prior to our move, arrived 15 minutes early, packed the larger items well and were done in record time. I would use their service again.

They were very punctual and very quick during the move. I don't have too many valuable or fragile things, so perhaps that would be a concern of mine if I did for them to take a bit more care as they're moving things quickly in and out. Otherwise, great service and really appreciated the quick/punctual work.

Tony and his crew were great movers who helped us pack, load and unload quickly, despite having to deal with multiple flights of stairs on both the new and old apartment. They're very hard working and friendly! He also runs a cleaning service and I hired him and his wife for that move out cleaning too!

Renan was absolutely amazing with his dedication to helping me move. My job turned out to take much longer than originally planned, but he stayed and supported me to the end which required him coming back late at night to finish the move. I would never expect this from anyone and was so impressed with his service. I will be using him in the future and recommend him to everyone needing a mover with who’s friendly and fast!

Wow! Ricardo was amazing. Was always very quick to respond and answer any question I might have. Showed up right on time and was able to pack everything up and deliver it to my new apartment in less time than initially quoted. The two movers disassembled and reassembled all my furniture as well and not a single item was scratched, broken, or lost at the end. Do yourself a favor and hire Larro's moving services! They will take all the stress out of moving!

Absolutely incredible and thoughtful service. I think I’ll be hiring Steve for a lot more than just moving for the unforeseeable future - he listens and will go out of his way to accommodate any situation - and will self direct, no matter how ambiguous or confusing the request. Total gem.

I received outstanding service from Betty, Omar, and Carlos in setting up and completing my furniture moving task today. Betty is a true professional, who was the only one of several people I reached out to who provided me a fair and clear quote for the furniture moving job I needed done in San Francisco. When Omar and Carlos arrived, they were helpful, kind, professional, careful, thorough, and friendly to work with. My experience overall was exceptional and I would use BJ’s multi service again, absolutely.

For the most part - Larro's Moving Services was sufficient. They arrived on time which I appreciated and then two moving guys were friendly and got to work right away. I did feel like the move took quite a while (I moved out of a single bedroom into another single bedroom with barely any furniture as I bought brand new furniture that was being delivered separately, and I only moved a few blocks away). Also, I showed the movers a coffee table that was upstairs and asked them to move it downstairs so they wouldn't forget, but they didn't and they ended up forgetting the coffee table all together and we all had to go back to the old place to go get it and I was charged for the extra time even though the mover said over and over again that it was his fault. Ultimately they got the job done but I was a bit disappointed in the efficiency of this move and do not think I should have been charged for their mistake.

My experience with Larro's Moving Service was nothing short of spectacular! I planned my move on short notice (about a week out), but that posed no problem for Larro's - they accommodated everything I needed. I had arranged for them to start the move late at night (10pm), but when I arrived on site, I learned that we could get started earlier. I called Ricardo, and he had his team there within the hour. They worked quickly and tirelessly, and left absolutely no mess for me to deal with. I cannot recommend Larro's enough. Hire these guys! You won't regret it.

I've moved 5 times in the last 6 years, so I've seen a range of professional movers. Larro's was by far the worst. I felt like they were scamming us because they moved SOOOOO slowly. - while getting paid by the hour! We finally told them to stop packing up boxes and just focus on the furniture. We came back later to finish the move ourselves, rather than pay them $155/hour to take their time. We reached out to the manager for a partial reimbursement, who offered $70 back, then retracted because he said we would write a bad review regardless. I've never had worse customer service.

I don't always write reviews, but I have to write one for Ricardo and the rest of the team at Larro's Moving Services. They were incredibly professional and helped us get through multiple tough spots without squeezing us on cost. The first issue is when I realized that the truck that we had ordered was not going to fit on our block. At first, I was afraid that I would not be able to move that day, but instead they figured out when the next (smaller) truck would be available and rebooked me for the same day (only charging me for the small 30 minute increment that it took to try to park the larger truck). They did NOT charge for the time it took to drive the truck back or to bring the new truck. The second great thing that they did was to bring a 3rd mover (I had only hired 2 originally) in order to make sure we would be able to cmplete the move as quickly as possible. The best part ... they did not charge us extra to bring the 3rd mover. And finally, no damaged furniture! Definitely use Larro's (especially for larger moves when their rate and service beats the competition). Thanks guys!

Movers didn’t show up. We asked our point of contact Tyler multiple times for the direct contact info of the movers but he did not provide it and only gave vague, slow responses that “they should be there soon.” We waited for a while and then ended up having to find last-minute movers and paying significantly more out of pocket due to the desperate situation. We had paid a $50 “reservation fee” to Truket when we booked their services (which they claim is common in the moving industry and their fee is lower than average), but at this point that seems to be lost money that they have pocketed. Joe did text us the next day about the “concerns on your move” but no response since I texted him back what happened. No word from them still and we have not received a refund or anything.

Dante and his colleague were extremely responsive, kind, flexible, and the best value out there. They got the job done quick and handled our furniture with care. They also wore masks and gloves and were very open with communication throughout the entire booking and execution process. Would highly recommend and will be sure to use their services again for my next move!!

Sadly, I never ended up using Larro's services, but I was highly impressed with how responsive he was with me and my barrage of questions. He was very quick to reply and answered everything professionally and to the detail! I appreciate the help and was sad I had to back out last minute. But my experience was great up to everything before my supposed move!

The only reason I'm giving this company one star is because zero wasn't an option. I had Two Friends Movers confirmed to move my three bedroom apartment on Saturday, September 2nd at 10:00am. By the time 11:00am rolled around, I still hadn't heard anything so I gave them a call. They informed me that, although I had received confirmation through the Thumbtack website, they wouldn't be able to come until closer to 3:00pm (despite me telling them I needed to be out before 4:00pm). I keep receiving word that I'll get a call back after the manager became involved, but hours went by and I did not receive calls back. I called multiple times and closer to 2:00pm, they told me they would not be coming at all. I was completely left hanging and was forced to pay hundreds extra for movers to come with no advance notice. In addition to paying extra for last-minute movers, I had to pay a late move-out fee at my old apartment due to making the mistake of booking Two Friends in the first place. This company provided no service despite being confirmed several days in advance and ended up costing me ~$500.

Very disappointed overall with the level of service. First of all, these guys were slow. There were two movers, and while one of them seemed to be working, the other just wasn't doing that much and seemed to be taking frequent breaks. Every time they went out to the truck, they were out there for a long time. I've moved fairly frequently, and this was by far the slowest crew I've ever had. On the backend, the two guys were taking one dolly back and forth together up a freight elevator which had a lot of capacity, which was a bit baffling as the dollies could easily taken by one person, and this wasted a ton of time. The small two bedroom apartment took 8 hours to move into a storage facility pretty close by. Even accounting for some loose items and upfront organizing, this felt really long for the space. Of greater concern, multiple items were dropped, including a nice dresser and an entire pallet of boxes, many of which were clearly marked fragile. Because we moved everything into storage, I won't know the extent of the damage for months, but I do expect there will be broken items. Additionally there was nothing to sign in terms of acknowledgment, liability, etc, which I've never experienced with a professional moving company before and was a clear red flag. The movers themselves were nice and generally helpful other than the speed and dropped items, and for the most part they wrapped and cared for the furniture, etc, which is why I'm giving an extra star. The price seemed good, but with the amount of time it took, it came out way more expensive than I thought, and I guess you get what you pay for.

What an amazing experience I just had with this company. Transitioning out of my role at work, planning a wedding, getting married in 10 days, moving to a new city.. I was nothing but overwhelmed... these guys toook the moving aspect off my plate and even though I was nervous I was re assured after meeting Mike and T that my belongings were in good hands and would make it to my destination with no issues. I truly felt taken care of and re assured by Brandon T and Mike and feel wonderful to have received amazing customer service from start to finish. Thank you!

From our first email correspondence with My Move to receiving all of our furniture, we truly appreciated how open, honest, and responsive My Move was to all of our needs. This was the first time we've done a cross country move (from SF to NYC) and were naturally fearful of all the things that could go wrong, especially with reading about other people's moving experience with other companies. We are so grateful to have found My Move through Thumbtack, and Richard was our contact person from start to end and the person that we could trust. The total cost of our move was very reasonable, there were no hidden charges, and all costs were priced out fairly. The customer service provided was impeccable, and we also sincerely appreciated the responsibility the company took to compensate us for our mirror that was left behind. Our items arrived within the timeframe as promised, undamaged, and without any missing items. The driver kept in close contact with us as well from when the truck was being loaded, when he was leaving SF, and also communicated his expected arrival in NYC on multiple occasions. We can't thank My Move enough for the superb care and for making our experience a very pleasurable one. We will definitely keep My Move in our back pocket for all our future moves, and would highly recommend this company to all of our friends and family!

The movers changed our scheduled time from 11am to 1pm 5 mins before they were supposed to arrive. We had our elevator scheduled for that time which is really hard to get in our building since there are so many residents. They asked the night before if we can move to 1pm instead of planned 11am and we said absolutely not since we have our elevator scheduled, it made me concerned so i asked to make sure they come at 11am and they said they would and they didn’t. It’s not 5 or 25 min which i totally can understand. It’s two hours! And they planned it this way probably finding a bigger move earlier in the day after they planned with us. So our entire day went crazy from there. I obviously didn’t want to deal with them after so i found a really nice moving team in 5 mins! We are lucky they were available since this was completely unreliable! Moving in/out Is already pretty stressful so unreliable movers are the worst. Don’t use their service if you don’t want to end up in my shoes they are very unreliable.

Michael was very prompt and thorough in describing his services and he kept his word. I needed help packing up my stuff for a move while I was unexpectedly out of town. He put my mind at ease by packing everything up in a very organized and helpful manner. He listened to what I asked for but also operated independently. This put my mind at ease and took a huge weight off my shoulders. Definitely recommend!
