From beginning till the end, Elmo showed excellent professionalism. I felt comfortable and trust with him from the first time I met him. He went beyond, and even went and saw the venue before the event to familiarize with the venue. He deserves 10 stars. He even did video of the event! I will use his services again. Please use his services. You will not be disappointed. I am very happy with Elmo. Thank you Elmo for making us feel special.

I first met Joe Lee in 2011 when I spent seven days with him as we traveled with the Wreaths Across America convoy from Maine to Arlington National Cemetery. Joe conducted himself with the utmost professionalism at each of our many stops along the way. He captured the special moments on audio, video and in still shots enabling me to recount the entire trip as if I was there in person again. This past July, Joe flew to Minneapolis to volunteer as the photographer and videographer for a two day memorial event held in honor of my son, an Army Ranger KIA in 2009. The morning of the first day, my house was struck by lightning and a fire ensued. Joe lost some of his equipment but quickly replaced it on his own so he could still do what he came to. This was a chaotic situation that others may have become discouraged from, but not Joe! He stayed the course and never faltered from his commitment. Joe Lee is not only very professional, he is a very personable guy whose positive presence will add to any event. Highly recommend!

Dave and his team are absolute pros with tons of experience, who know the ins and outs of working in the DC market. I've worked with them for 2 shoots: 1 live-streaming event on Capitol Hill and 1 interview in a federal agency building. In both instances the crew arrived on time, prepared to shoot, and with a highly professional attitude. Moreover, Dave is incredibly helpful ahead of time, walking you through what will make each job a success. Simply put, they do fantastic work at a price point that's reasonable and that I can justify to budget conscious clients. They are my go-to for all video work.

I hired Ilya to shoot a video of my band's show at the Queen in Wilmington. I got 6 quotes; Ilya had the most experience shooting bands so I went with him. He did a great job, I got videos from 4 different cameras, all HD, and he got an audio feed from the mixing board on two of the cameras. I would recommend Ilya to other bands who need great quality videos, and I would use him again myself. Good value and very easy to work with; reliable and responsive; plus his stuff looks great. Working with DIM Productions was phenomenal. Coordinating beforehand was simple and straightforward, and during our event they were very accommodating and flexible to our specific requests and needs. They provided our pictures and video quickly after the event, and all the pictures turned out great. We are proudly sharing with friends and family. They also had video at our event, for which they provided an edited cut that captured everything that happened during our day. They even enhanced it in a few ways that we didn't see coming, and so we were appreciative of that. Overall, we had a tremendous experience and recommend DIM Productions to anyone and everyone. Very, very pleased!

I hired Leslie to do a photo shoot of a company meeting I was hosting in Washington DC. Leslie was great. She was very easy to communicate with in advance - I was coming to an event from out of town and she made it really easy to work with her. She captured great moments and photos turn out really well. She also does a same day delivery of key shots and then had 100s of the event photos edited and ready for me within a week! I recommend Leslie for event photography and will use her if my company is in DC area again.

I first met Winstead in July or August 2013 when I walked into a salon in need of some hair attention. While Winstead was working he had a video playing at his work station that showed him doing professional makeup, photo shoots and hair. I was impressed by how professional the video was and remembered feeling so blessed that I lucked into being in the chair of this "well kept secret". He did a fantastic job on my hair. Fast forward to mid October, 2014. My wedding was scheduled for Oct 25th and I had been functioning under the incorrect assumption that my daughters would help me with my hair and makeup. They finally convinced me that this event demanded the attention of a professional. I got a hold of Winstead and asked if there was any chance that he could find time to do my hair and makeup on the morning of my wedding? He was very accomodating and came to my hotel room at 7:15am with a mobile hair and makeup setup. He immediately turned on very soothing music to help me relax and less than 90 minutes later I looked absolutely incredible!! I highly recommend Winstead for ANY hair, makeup, photography or videography needs. He is absolutely amazing and northern Virginia is so lucky to have a professional of this quality!! I would not hesitate to call him again.

The pictures of the food came out beautiful, better than what my company expected at a great value with a large selection to choose from to be finalized. I would recommend Fanette Rickert Photography and I would choose her again.

Greggo Lee Films has been my go to cinematographer for my international service trips. I travel with 15-20 kids each year to Belize and the owner of Greggo Lee Films personally attends this trip and documents the entire journey. His level of professionalism, energetic interaction with the kids and locals, and flexibility during the trip were unmatched. I was highly impressed by the photos and video he created. There were many memories that I had no idea were captured until I received the final product. His eye for a great shot is impeccable. I would highly recommend using this company for any event domestic or international.

Eric Justice was the videographer for my wedding in Washington, DC on April 12, 2015. I was very impressed with him because he arrived early, was extremely focused & confident, and was able to work in a way where I pretty much forgot he was recording me while I was getting ready. I felt extremely comfortable with him in my hotel room. After recording myself and the groom getting ready, he left and went to set up his cameras at the venue, where the wedding and reception were both held. There were 100 guests and he captured everything and did an excellent job! The next day, I received an email from him which informed me that he had posted a highlight clip on YouTube. As my husband and I watched the video together our mouths dropped because we were amazed at the quality...the moments he captured were incredible. We were so happy to be able to share it with our friends and relatives, especially the ones who couldn't make it to our wedding. A couple of weeks later, we received our feature film and it was beautiful. Eric even had video of our guests individually wishing us well....what an amazing bonus! We were thrilled with Eric's service and we couldn't be any happier. Eric went above and beyond what I would've expected from a videographer. His work is exceptional and I would highly recommend Affordable Videography by Eric!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
