Tim has been a real pleasure to work with. He was always reachable by phone or email and was clear about costs. My project ended up being more than I was originally quoted, but the scope also expanded, so that is to be expected. Tim always made sure I was happy with plant placement before planting and did a wonderful job. It has been close to 6 months since Tim did my landscape and one of the plants did not take over the winter. Tim immediately replied that he would replace the plants within the week of my contacting him. I highly recommend using Tim for your landscaping needs.

I posted on Thumbtack for a lawn care job. I received a response almost immediately, had the property viewed and an offer within a few hours. His price was reasonable and he did solid work. The grass and weeds were close to 2 feet tall on a neglected rental property I have. He mowed and trimmed, leaving the plants in my yard untouched. I would readily hire him again for a job like this.

Matthew and his crew did a full replacement of our existing landscape . A fire pit, sitting wall, patio, edging, a retaining wall, relocation of irrigation heads, a fountain, new plants, and lighting. Matthew has a real talent when it comes to visualizing a space and what would work well there. His design, hard work, and great crew absolutely exceeded our expectations!

I was happy with Mark and how he explained everything relating to my sprinkler system and a few other lawn issues. He was professional and didn't pressure me into anything such as additional services. I would highly recommend hiring Mark and his company for your total lawn care needs.

Jeremy and his crew were absolutely fantastic! My recommendation couldn't be any higher. We were looking for someone capable of coming right away to help us do a long list of landscaping items, from trimming all of our shrubs, defining razor sharp lines around landscaped beds, mulching, removing dead shrubs and rose trees, cutting down an entire maple tree, cleaning up and lifting a giant Pin Oak tree, and more. We met him on a Sunday and reviewed this list, he gave an unbeatable quote and had the ENTIRE job down within 5 hours the next day. His crew, was on time, courteous, attentive to detail, and respectful of our property and cleaning up. We are thrilled to know this kind of service exists, and would recommend Jeremy to anyone. Thank you so much guys - We hope to keep you coming back over the years. Amazing job.

OMG!! Geraldo and Alejandro are FANTASTIC!! We could not be happier with the work they did for us. They are super friendly gentleman, very personable, very curtious. They have a VERY solid wok ethic, in fact, they don't stop!! We were invaded by weeds like crazy...there was no stopping them! Geraldo & Alejandro knocked these weeds down, laid landscaping fabric (to help prevent future weeds), and put over 3" off great mulch down. Their price was BEYOND fair and instead of skimping on the thickness on the amount of mulch they put down, what did they do?? They went and got MORE at no additional charge to us!!! Who does that?? I was crazy happy!!! 😀😀. I just cannot explain enough how great it was to work with these guys. It was GREAT!! We are so great full to them. Our back yard looks AWESOME and now we are imspired to go crazy back there and get the pond going, plant more planting seeds and just really enjoy out yard again. Plus, these to great guys put up with me letting our dogs out to potty while they were working. No sweat for them. They just petted the dogs, played a little and went on about their day. Clean up? Fantastic. They removed every thing. Then they blowed the driveway, the gravel pathways and the pad we have for our swing off. The backyard was spotless!! I really enjoyed our day with Geraldo and Alejandro. I would most definitely recommend them to anyone in need of landscaping, patio work, brick laying, etc. You can't beat their price, and I have to say even if someone came in lower then their bid, I still would have went with these guys. The WORK ETHIC cannot be beat!! We are going to use them again to mulch the front flower beds and get everything ready for winter. Thank you Geraldo and Alejandro for your GREAT work today and we look forward to having y'all out again very soon. Thank you THUMBTACK...It was our pleasure!! Sincerely, Christine & Doug

Matt and his team are professionals. They communicated with me throughout the whole process from bid to completion. They followed up after install to ensure the system was functioning correctly, and have scheduled a complimentary checkup on my system after the ground settles to make any necessary adjustments. My installation is connected underground at the water meter and includes an automatic master shutoff valve. These are features other similarly priced quotes did not cover. Matt doesn't cut any corners. I had a great experience with KC Sprinkler Pros, and I encourage anybody looking for an irrigation install or maintenance to give them a call.

So happy with my experience working with The Grounds Guys! I received a timely response to my post. Jessica came to my house to find out what I was looking to do, listened when I talked about my need for 'easy' and followed up with a complete estimate. She came out again to work with me one-in-one to determine plant/shrub choices and sketch out the entire project. The work was completed within two days and again Jessica followed up to give me guidance on the follow-up care. Highly recommend!

Ricardo did such a good job, very easy to work with. He offered recommendations of additional things they could do to help with our water drainage problems, but was not pushy at all. They came out pretty soon after our initial estimate and got the job done quickly.

I have used this service the past 2 years, and this is my 3rd. I am very happy with the service I get, and the fact he is on time with the day he says he will be there. They are very careful around my flower beds, and the edging along the plants in the front never touched.

We are extremely happy with the work completed. Several flowerbeds/garden areas needed overhauls and the work was completed as requested and efficiently. We were very happy with the care given to the yard and other plantings. We have retained XPro for lawn mowing services this year also. Thank you!

Tyler gave excellent service (weed & feed, leaf cleanup and mowing.) The leaves were cleaned up so well and even around our plants. Looked great. His charges were very reasonable. Tyler was professional and very courteous. He had all the right equipment for the job. (Leaf blower, riding lawn mover, etc.) I don't give a five rating very often...but to Tyler I will!! I asked him to plant some trees in the future and some other landscaping. He said no problem.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
