We hired Glenn Willis of Willis Installations to build wooden steps with railing and lattice work off the back of our house so we could access our paver patio, as well as, install a new front door knob assembly and to replsce a pull chain light bulb housing. We are extremely happy with the all the work that was completed by Glenn and will use his services again. Glenn was very accommodating, knowledgeable and his prices are extremely reasonable.

Dan installed kitchen backsplash for using glass tiles in a subway design. The project took about one and a half days. On the second day, it snowed! However, Dan arrived to our home to complete the grouting as promised. I was impressed by Dan's dedication, professional behavior and craftsmanship. We are very happy with our new backsplash and would recommend Dan to our friends!

My wife and I decided to update our master bathroom over the winter. In order to do so we needed to find someone capable of doing the updates we wanted while keeping to our budget. After seeing his work, we selected Gary Johnson who does contract work on the side to complete our job. He did a great job explaining the time frame and steps he would take in updating our bathroom. He discussed all of the options with us in terms of style and design at the beginning as well as throughout the completion of the job. This was very helpful since we didn't realize how much actually went into the renovation project even with such a small area. All in all we felt he did an excellent job with both the design and the execution of the job. The job was completed on time and on budget which was a relief for us as still relatively new home owners. Additionally I was able to observe along the way and learn a few techniques he utilized doing the job. We both would use him again in the future and recommend him to others for similar projects.

I have a new house and needed some detailed trim work done. My fireplace only had a mantel shelf, so I had Roger build out around the fireplace with trim and create a full mantel surround. Also, the cabinetry on my large kitchen island was plain on the backside. I had Roger add Wainscoting, baseboard and trim out the corners of the island. I provided some pictures as examples for both jobs and he was able to creatively match his work to the pictures exactly. The jobs were done in a very timely manner and on a date that was convenient for me. I am very pleased with the end result and will use him again for future projects!

We recently hired Ammon Outdoor Design to completely redo our front landscape, and couldn't be happier. The employees were kind, professional and courteous. Clay worked with our budget and desires to give us a cohesive design that has made such a dramatic change to our home! His knowledge is outstanding, down to why he chose each item, which would be best for kids playing in our yard, and what will be easiest to maintain. Their guarantee was great as well! We have genuinely enjoyed our experience!

I called YUPRS a little over a year to do some plumbing work in my kitchen. He was very responsive, and knowledgeable! His mannerisms were outstanding! Not only did he fix the plumbing issue in a timely manner, but he also did some electric work on my dishwasher, and kitchen island. I will definitely be calling YUPRS back for any future home remodeling, or repairs that my husband or myself cannot do.

Working with Robert has been great. He truly cares about his clients and has done everything he can to make our vision a reality. He has gone above and beyond any expectations we could have had for what a contractor could do/be going in to building our first home in Cincinnati. The quality of his work and his dedication to our project is without question top of the line. I would recommend Robert to anyone in heart beat.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
