Overall: Good Interior team (2 ladies, 1 man): Outstanding Outside gutter and outside window team: Average My client's house is a 6700+ sq. ft. house, 2 interior stories, basement, garage, lots of windows (some huge! and some 2.5 stories above ground) Attitude of crews and owner: Very good and helpful Skill of crews: Interior crew - Mostly excellent on a house that had some cleaning challenges in the kitchen and master bath (missed a few dust bunnies however) Exterior crew - Needs additional training, had to ask for repeat window cleaning of noticeable streaks created by their squeegee methods (they should have seen and corrected without having to be asked) PLUS they brought a defective pressure washer to site and we lost a huge amount of time waiting for this issue to be resolved. Then later I was told about the number of man hours involved without any mention of this lost time that I paid for (total billing was over $1000). 3 specific jobs quoted in this bundle: Interior general cleaning Interior and Exterior windows cleaning Exterior gutter pressure washing In retrospect, this job was just too big for this company. Had to call them back twice, once to fix and reinstall latticework that fell to the floor (fortunately no one was injured and nothing inside but the latticework was damaged - we got lucky here!) that they did not properly secure after cleaning a very large arched window. They are nice folks who are sincere, but this job was a bit too much for them.

Rockwell Remodeling saved my sanity. House is 10 years old and we were the second owners. Two windows never closed properly and no one could figure out why. Rockwell took the time to research online, call manufacturer and spent two different times at my house working on the windows. He figured it out! Come to find out when installed they never took out all of the packing protection - it looked just like part of the window. All of the windows now close! Thank you so much.

Added a roof to our existing deck, framed it added shingles, vinyl to the underside with new soffit and trim. We were so pleased at how nice it looked, we had him to add the vinyl railing to match the look on the front of the house. We also had a "man door" cut out, framed and door installed. Shawn and his crew were very professional, easy to work with, performed precise quality work, Always on time and worked longer hours to get the job completed in a timely manner. Will definitely give them a call for our next construction project needs...

Super pleased with the work that David completed at my home today! My new home has a large privacy fence and deck that was not given much TLC by previous owner. The large wooden doors kept falling off hinges and my dogs constantly were escaping. David replaced everything, even the wood panels, and made the foundation much sturdier than it previously was. In addition, he did a few small repairs to another wooden door that I was having issues with as a "Thank You" for choosing him for his services! Prices were fair, he was on time, informed me of every step that would be taken, and the job was done in just one day! I have had a difficult time in the past finding reliable trustworthy individuals to help me around the house, but will definitely be reaching out to David for more work as the weather warms up! I was looking for a interior painting contractor to paint our master bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. I was given names of painters from various friends and co-workers. I was amazed that no one either called me back or the ones that did, never showed up to give an estimate. I then went on thumbtack and found Pedro. Him and his wife Hilda arrived promptly at my house at the time scheduled. I received a written estimate the next day. I felt the estimate was fair, even though I did not get any other bids. Pedro started the job on the day we agreed upon. I asked him if it would be a problem to add painting a powder room and to do some tile work in the bath. He was able to add on the additional work. Pedro and Hilda have a high level of attention to detail. The tile work Pedro did in the master bath exceeded my expectations. They were very easy to work with, and were always concerned with my complete satisfaction. I would strongly recommend them.

We needed to have repairs done to our bedroom closet--bifold door repaired and rehung, rods installed, knobs replaced / repaired. Mr. Jones was easy to communicate with and schedule. He arrived on time, assessed the work to be done, and determined what parts would be needed. We ended up providing him with the key to our condo, so that he could shop for supplies, complete another job, and return to finish our job later that afternoon. We went about our business and he called us when the job was complete. Everything looked and worked great. He also had to repaint an area around the closet track. His rate was very reasonable. We were pleased with his work and will definitely be calling him again to do work around our house. Highly recommended!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
