Move It by Bike – Review Tim and his crew arrived punctually at the scheduled time, which was early in the day since I wanted to avoid the afternoon summer heat. Of all the bids I received, this was the earliest start time I was offered and a big point in Tim’s favor. Everyone was friendly and ready to work. They were great at loading their own stackable plastic bins, which were brought to me well in advance without an extra charge. Tim made two trips before the move to bring me a total of 20 bins. Packing them was easier and faster than filling cardboard boxes since they’re sturdier and lock in place when stacked. No messing with all that tape either. However, they were quite dirty and tiny roaches were crawling on some of them. They could use a good power-wash. Tim did not give me a deadline for returning the plastic containers, which was really helpful after many days of packing and a stressful and tiring day of moving. I unpacked and returned the bins within 4 days anyway, which is faster than I would’ve unpacked my own cardboard boxes. The main reason was to help Tim in case he had another customer, but the roaches also motivated me. I was impressed by Tim’s concern for his crew – belts and straps to help carry the heavy stuff, plus verbal pointers on how to lift. Concern for furniture was not as good. Two fabric chairs were loaded without being wrapped so one of them received a stain I suspect is permanent, probably oil based. Also, wood shelves were loaded without any attempt to prevent scratches. Before the job, Tim walked through my apartment and came up with an estimate and commented that it was probably too high. In fact, he estimated 4 hours and it took 5. This is probably due to inexperience. I expect he’ll get better at calculating the various factors – how much stuff is there, how far away is the move, how much fits in each wagon, how fast or slow his crew works. He even forgot that there were stairs at my new place, and that’s a major time factor in any move. Nevertheless, the final cost was less than any of the truck movers that bid on my move since their hourly rates are much higher. They will no doubt move you faster, but the total price will still be more than Tim’s. The biggest disappointment was Tim’s handling of damage to my TV cabinet. The piece is about 5 ½ feet tall and stands on legs that are 18 inches. He watched his crew trying to carry the cabinet up a flight of stairs UPRIGHT. On the second step, the crew said they were having problems lifting the legs over each step. Clearly, the cabinet should have been on its BACK. The end result was a broken leg. In addition, I have since discovered deep scratches on each side of the cabinet from the lifting straps, which aren’t padded to prevent that sort of thing and which would have been on the back side of the cabinet if carried up properly. Tim’s reaction to the broken cabinet leg was to imply that the piece was already broken and/or that I should have warned him that it was in poor condition to begin with. These are issues that only experience will improve. The best position to carry the cabinet should have been discussed beforehand. And despite my attempts to be tactful by saying the piece was cheap, Tim should have taken responsibility for the broken leg which was not broken at the beginning of the trip since it was standing perfectly fine when they took it out of the old apartment. Taking ownership for the breakage and offering a small discount would have gone a long way, although four days later he did offer to locate a replacement part. In the end, I’m glad I used Move it by Bike for my most recent move and I’d hire Tim again. It’s a new business and he still has many things to learn and improvements to make. But the concept is good in so many ways! Eco-friendly. A small, local enterprise. Innovative. Creative. As fun as working your butt off can be. And funky in a N’Awlins sort of way. I’m pleased that I had the chance to help this new business in its early stages. Best of luck to Tim and Move It by Bike!

The 2 movers from Pristine Cleaning, LLC were very professional and courteous. They completed the move very timely and even hauled away some discarded items. I decided to hire them to clean my apartment from which I vacated. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing their types of services. PS. The fee charged was EXTREMELY reasonable!! The movers were nice, fast, and accommodating. They wrapped all the furniture and they packed it into the truck like a tight game of tetris. It was a great experience and worth every penny. Which wasn't many pennies because they are totally affordable!

TOTALLY WORTH THE MONEY!!! I shopped around for weeks, and, yes, Marshall costs more than some movers, but it was totally worth it! NO surprise fees! Exactly what they quoted me! Plus they showed up 15 minutes early (most movers show up hours later than they are scheduled to) and they completed the move in less time than they originally predicted. They worked carefully but constantly and efficiently. They had all the tools they needed to carry, cover, protect, and tie down my furniture. Nothing was damaged or even scratched. The guys who came were very polite and even offered to help me move other items when they were done. AND I moved from a 3rd floor apartment into a 2nd floor and they didn't charge extra for stairs like most companies do! I am VERY pleased with the outcome!

Moving day is always so stressful for me! When Kevin and his crew got there, I was immediately at ease. They offer packing and cleaning services, as well, which makes it even easier! No time constraints, or hourly rates. Just one flat fee for as many movers as needed to get it done, and quickly! AND they understand that moving is already expensive, before the movers! They are willing to work with you and your budget, and even offer a payment plan! I will recommend them to everyone I know, and if I move again, they will be the ones I call!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
