Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

The company had to reschedule due to another job that took too long, but their communication was good. They did an excellent job, with knowledge of the proper way to trim our old sweet olive trees.

These guys are great! Did a great job of trimming back several palm trees, and did an awesome job of cleaning up afterwards. Asked me several times, how I wanted things trimmed, to make sure it was what I wanted - they have a personal touch. Took time to clean up and even took a net and cleaned the pool. Everything looks great! They were a great crew, that works well together - could hear them laughing and chatting. Would/will hire again!

The job was complex. Tree's on the sidewalk in a historic district that needed paperwork from the city, two tree's in one neighbor's house and one in another. They ended up even working a side contract with out neighbor. If it wasn't for a few communication issues because they were busy that week. I would give them 5 stars. Still waiting get one tree trimmed but they have apologized 1,000 times and I expect it all to get taken care of but that can make you nervous when you have already paid someone in full and are still waiting for something to get done on their time. Overall I would use these guys again and expect issues we had to not be the norm. They definitely appear to want make the entire experience flawless.

Terry responded quickly to my inquiry. I was on a tight schedule imposed by my homeowner's insurer. On one day we agreed on the scope of the work, the next day we signed a contract. The following day, he brought plenty of employees/family members to finish the job that day. During the project we found an unanticipated piece of extra work. We were surprised to learn that one tree was dead. He removed it without changing the price even though it was unanticipated, and he was only planning to trim it. I am really pleased with the work and the price. I am having him perform work on another of my properties.

I was looking on Thumbtack for a company to trim a live oak in my front yard and remove two smaller trees from my back yard. Terry responded to my search and request the same day, and he was exceptionally easy to work with. Terry is very friendly and proffessional, definitely aiming to please the customer. He was flexible in setting up our appointment and then with scheduling the work itself. Terry was also flexible with my requests as the scope of that job increased a bit. He kept me up to date on the timeframe for getting the work started and done, and made sure he had enough people here to complete the work within the abbreviated timeframe I had available that day. Even when a portion of the work could not be done according to our agreement (a stump that had to be grinded instead of dug out), Terry was proactive in both finding and scheduling someone who could come and complete the grinding task for us, while also negotiating a fair price for the additional work. Terry and his crew (including son Justin) were communicative, prompt, negotiated a very fair price, flexible in scheduling and adding tasks, and above all else aimed to please. I am very happy with the work they did for me. Hire them.
