Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Everything about Round the Clock Moving was fine with the exception of punctuality regarding the final arrival day of my long distance move. The movers were a day later than promised and this caused a ripple effect for plans at destination city.

We hired upward moving and storage for our recent move. We had to switch the date and they were very accommodating. The guys were friendly and made sure to wrap everything for safe travels. The price was $300 more than our original quote but our apartment makes it difficult to move quickly so it took longer than anticipated. Would recommend for your moving needs.

Joe, Justin, and Enzo helped me with a two bedroom move to a town 100 miles away in CT. They arrived on time, worked fast, were courteous and asked me questions about the items that were moving. They were very considerate and I can’t thank them enough for the move.

Had a great experience with Red Eagle Movers. Staff were on-time responsive and professional. When the job needed to be extended, it was no problem setting it up for the next morning. Hopefully I never need to move again but would recommend this team for anyone else looking to make their move less painful.

From the first communication to the day the move took place, Geoffery was a complete pleasure to deal with. I had several changes to the initial plan to move but at every delay he couldn't have been more gracious, fair and accomodating. Son Light Movers is a professional and conscientious company who I would and will recommend repeatedly. There is no need to make calls to any other moving companies because you won't find a better one than Son Light!

Hiring a mover made things so much easier but having a reliable and communicative mover is priceless! Tom answered all my questions and he arrived on time with his crew. They worked hard and efficient. His prices are reasonable with a fixed rate. That put our minds to ease not having to watch the clock. Will definitely use Tom again. If you want an honest, reliable and responsible mover hire Tom.

Stark moving did a great job handling my long distance (within New England) move. They arrived at both locations on time and got right to work. They accommodated all requests I made regarding where items would go in my new home. They were professional, and the cost was right at the lower end of the estimate I received, which was less than half the cost of other estimates I received. I would absolutely recommend Stark Moving if you need the service.

I was given an estimated time of between 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. They did not show up to my home until 7:30p.m. This was very inconvenient for us. But other than that the men were very nice and did very good work moving our piano.

I had an excellent experience with Next Adventure Moving. The guys showed up on time and got right to work. Their level of professionalism and positive/cheerful attitudes made what’s normally a stressful day completely stress free. If I had a 3rd hand I’d give three thumbs up, these guys were great.

If you are looking for perfection... this is your guy. Rod moved my table 50 miles, re-felted with a new color, put all new bumpers, and put everything back together. He spent a lot of time making sure the table was perfectly centered to the room and level. He worked late into the night until everything was completed. Reasonable priced. Would definitely hire him again. Don’t waste your time looking elsewhere.

I chose this company based on rates and some reviews. We were selling and buying the property and both closings were on the same day. So we needed some specific time for moving – one day moving out and the next day moving in. I contacted the company and talk to Jessica (move director). She asked me what stuff we have, gave me a quote around $900 for both days and promised to send a contract. Next day my husband called her and asks about the contract and then we received it. We were asked to check that everything is correct and to add what was missing. So I updated the list of our stuff and fixed the time for the second day. We did not receive the corrected contract despite calling several times so we were not sure that the guys will come. But they came and the crew did a great job. Only the truck did not fit all our things and we have to rent additional U-Hall. It means that people in the office were not able to determine the size of truck even after receiving the list of our stuff. The bill for the first day was a little over $1000 and includes $199 for storage and two additional hours for coming to us and returning back. I was assured that I will not pay these two additional hours next day. It was not true. We asked the head of crew when will they come tomorrow and the time was not the time we asked about. So next morning before the first closing my husband called the company and had unpleasant talk with the guy who was the owner. Guy was rude and told that they will start charging us starting 12 pm and it was in the contract we signed (never happened). So we were completely upset. My husband received another call and crew came later as we needed but we were charged for additional two hours again. For two days we paid around $1900 (Please compare with quote price). WE NEVER RECEIVED ANY RECEIPTS DESPITE OF PROMISE TO EMAIL THEM TO US. My advice is - take at least a picture of the paper the guy will show you. So I do not recommend hiring this company. The crew is great but with their office you need to prepare yourself to have extra pain, worries and money to pay.
