Easy to schedule - showed up on time and let me know when they were on their way. The pipe on my stove didn't fit the universal hose so he had to run out real quick to get a part but the installation itself was quick.

I used thumbtack to help my client find a carpenter for custom window shutters to made from reclaimed wood to match existing shutters in another room of their house. Jeff not only responded quickly, with great detail, he completed the job fast and exactly as my client and I had hoped. He stained the shutters and used hardware that matched the existing shutters perfectly. Because of Jeff's skilled, professional and timely creation and installation, my clients are thrilled and I look like a superstar for recommending him. Thank you Jeff for a job well done!

Marine Home Improvement was not the cheapest of the bids we received for this job, yet we selected them and are very glad of it. The bid itself was professional looking and detailed. The details that it included helped us eliminate other vendors who hadn't spelled things out like: using the painted aluminum (instead of yucky J-channel), or if they were insulating. The quality of the work that is being done makes us glad we selected Marine Home Improvement. Worth every dime! Here are some reasons: Excellent work ethic - they show up and get right to work in the early morning. They work through cold and drizzle. They clean up after themselves both as they go and at the end of the day. High Quality work - There was a small area of rot they uncovered that they made sure was fixed correctly. They didn't just cover things over. Everything lines up aesthetically, and is clearly true and level. Attention to detail - The window framing is amazing. Watching them do it has been a source of interest for many of the folks that regularly walk down the street. People stop and watch. Personality - They are pleasant and polite, and when we've stopped them to ask about something, they are always accommodating of our questions.

I can't say enough good things about Joseph's work on this project. He came in to fix a few issues I had on cabinets that were installed by someone else. Needless to say, he made the kitchen look like it was supposed to look. He was careful, precise and patient when I didn't have everything he needed and had to run to the store. He installed the hardware on the cabinets as well and they're exactly what I pictured and completely lined up with each other. He did great work and is just an all around good guy. Will definitely be calling for future projects. Thank you again!

I hired Belo Builders to put on vinyl siding and a couple of new windows in my home. I am very pleased with all the work that was done. Dylan Belo took the time to go over certain details being sure to explain the parts which I didn't understand. He and his team were very professional and I had a great experience working with them. Everything came out beautifully. I highly recommend Belo Builders!

Keith has done several jobs for us in the past. This project involved replacement of 17 double-hung windows in our two-story home. He and Mike completed the job in a timely and professional manner and included working in and outdoors, removal & re-installation of window treatments and molding, touch-up painting of sills and molding, removal of old windows & storms and a lesson on the use and maintenance of the new windows. When they left, there was no indication that any construction had been done, their work areas were spotless. The windows we purchased, at Keith's suggestion, were exactly what we wanted and his quote for the work was very competitive. Keith and Mike couldn't have been more professional and pleasant during the process.

The job was to secure hand rails on two stairways to provide safety and come up to code. The work was excellent. The only problem was the carpenter arrived several hours later than expected, but considering he changed his schedule to come out on a Saturday after I expressed concern about a potential accident if someone put weight on a loose handrail, I wasn't too upset about the wait.

I think our work stands out from others because we have two installers that have been roofing for 27yrs togather so we know how to do things right the first time. Also we hand nail because we used roofing guns in the past and the caused us problems, blown off shingles.shingles sliding out of place after a hot summer. So we hand nail a hammer always leaves a nail flat on the roofing shingles.Roofing guns can set to deep in warm weather and crack around the nail head from the air presure in the colder months. And all you need is some good wind in either case and they'll(shingles) will be blowning off.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
