We are more than satisfied with the work that was done. We hired Bobby to install our pergot flooring. He not only agreed to my short notice but he was on time and completed entire job in one day. He took up and old ceramic floor and replaced with beautiful flooring. He went over and above what was expected from him. I would hire him again in a second. If you want quality work he is your only choice!

Manny and his crew are professional, reliable, courteous , honest etc. I can’t say enough kind things about Dubon Flooring. Manny was the 3rd company I hired to refinish the same floor. The first two contractors PNP flooring and Pro R both from Thumbtack did a horrific job and Manny was hired to correct their work. Third times a charm. The floors look as good as they can with what he had to work with. The finish is impeccable! I only wish we hired Dubon Flooring to start instead of paying three contractors for the same end result. Moral of my story, HIRE DUBON FLOORING if you want the job done correctly the first time and his prices are actually extremely competitive. STAY FAR AWAY FROM PRO R FLOORING and PNP FLOORING from Melrose MA. I personally would never hire another floor Contractor except for Dubon Flooring , thank you so much for all your hard work Manny.

We had LAN's Floor Care install hardwood flooring in our kitchen and family room after they removed carpet and tile in same area. We are very happy with the results and with overall service we received. The floors look beautiful and Lan was very professional. We had him give us a quote months in advance as we were away all winter but he kept his word and saved a time for us. We would recommend Lan to any of our friends and would certainly use him again in the future! Nancy and Jack Mac

Lou and his crew did a great job painting the interior of our home and installing crown molding this past winter. His staff was professional, thorough, and clean. They were respectful and mindful of the fact that I was at home working the entire time. The crew made it a priority to keep up happy throughout the job and that their work was up to our standards before they left. In addition to their quality work, Lou was reasonable when quoting additional work that we added after the job had begun.

Claudio Brisola of Fama Masonry and his workers did extensive masonry removal and and pouring of concrete walkways, 2 large retaining walls, front stair repair and asphalt/driveway removal with concrete driveway replacement at my home in Medford, Ma. Fama Masonry is a fantastic company to work with! Claudio came out to give a free estimate and we reviewed all the options. Price was a factor and we needed to negotiate the job to fit our budget. Claudio was able to do that without compromising the quality of workmanship. We had the walkway done first and after completion, discussed and agreed to work on the front do the home where the bigger, more extensive work was needed; i.e 2 retaining walls taken down and repoured/structured, repair in the garage of the floor, removal and pouring of new driveway. The site was clean after each day. The men were courteous and hard working. Claudio was available by phone if needed and came by in person several times throughout the entire project to ensure we were happy with the work and the job was on task and on time. Clean up was cleared out by a company contracted by Claudio and that went smoothly. Work was completed in the time we had agreed with 100+% satisfaction. I would highly recommend Fama Masonry to anyone who needs masonry help - from small or big projects!!

Art was fabulous! He just finished tiling our bathroom with floor to ceiling glass mosaics, and he did a beautiful job. He has an incredible work ethic. As soon as he showed up he started working and worked straight through for hours, and when the job was done he left no trace behind. I highly recommend him.

I posted a project on Thumbtack on Monday saying that I needed someone to install my wood flooring before Thursday and Wilson responded right away and by Tuesday night my project was complete. It couldn't have turned out any better. If I had another flooring project I wouldn't hesitate to call him back. He and his partner Oliver were very professional and hard working. The precision he used in laying the floor eliminated any need to use a quarter round to hide any gaps around the edges. I'm pretty fussy about the quality of work done in my home and these guys far exceeded any expectations that I had! Great communication, quality work, showed up on time and worked hard until the job was done (and cleaned up after they were done). What more could you ask for?

Gerry was prompt and responsive with my project to add a raised walkway through my unfinished attic. He came out the day after I put up the proposal and gave me a fair price for getting the work done. He came back two days later to complete the work, which was done to high quality. I will definitely hire him again.

Marcio installed a Marmoleum floating tile floor in our kitchen. Although the project took a bit longer than expected, Marcio came back early in the morning the very next day to finish the job for no extra charge. The floor came out great. Marcio and his team were professional and responsive to our requests. I would recommend them to anyone seeking home improvement help.

The whole experience of purchasing a new replacement glass slider went very well. The company's owner, Gary, came to my house, reviewed some possible alternatives at different price points, and gave an excellent overview of what to look for in regard to quality. I chose a door that was made to order, arrived a bit sooner than expected, and was expertly installed. The installer, Artie, found a lot of rot under my existing door, and this necessitated a lot of extra work, which was done with great care and attention to detail. I would definitely recommend this company if you are in the market for replacement windows or doors.

We needed a couple of our wall-to-wall carpets stretched to take out some wrinkling. Hanson Floors performed the work and did an excellent job. We are very pleased with the results. They were easy to work with, arrived on time and completed the job within the timed that they estimated. They cleaned up well after completing the job, too. I recommend Hanson Floors for any flooring needs.

Jose and his partner did an exceptional job on removing my kitchen tiles, cleaning up the subfloor, and installing the prefinished wood. What separates these guys from the others I’ve worked with is their honesty, value, and reliability. They showed up exactly when they said they would and backed up any further materials they needed to buy by providing receipts. In the end, the quality of their work was fantastic. If you live in the Somerville, Medford, Arlington, or surrounding Boston area, I highly suggest you hire these guys.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
