Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want.

Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June.

Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

How many photos should you get from a wedding photographer?

A professional wedding photographer will usually supply their clients with several hundred photos (200, 300, 400 or 800 and more). Some might even provide more than 1,000 photos. It ultimately depends on the photographer.

Wedding photographers will usually take several thousand photos but cut them down to the keepers. They also have to edit these photos. Typically, they will provide them to the clients on a digital hard drive, as an online download or even in a photo album with beautiful decorations.

How long do wedding photographers stay?

A wedding photographer usually expects to work a full day. This gives them time to photograph the venue, cake, rings, shoes, centerpieces, invitations and other aspects of the wedding before the guests arrive. It also allows them time to get photos of the bride and groom alone, as well as the hair and makeup process and fun personality pictures. Then, they will work through all the parts of the wedding.

What pictures should be taken at a wedding?

On your wedding day, your photographer should take pictures of the couple getting ready for the wedding, as well as a fun personality picture before activities begin. They should also photograph showstoppers like the bouquet, invitations, shoes, reception space, cake, centerpieces, rings and the veil. A generational photo with parents or grandparents is also special. There should also be photos of the bride and groom alone, the ceremony, the confetti-filled exit, and hair and makeup.

When should you take wedding photos?

Couples can take wedding photos before their actual ceremony, during cocktail hour (before the reception), during the wedding reception or even after their wedding. The least stressful time to do it is often before the ceremony when hair and makeup generally look their best, temperatures are usually lower because it’s earlier in the day and the couple won’t have to think or worry about it for the rest of the day.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

I highly suggest Irina as your wedding photographer! I never met her personally before our wedding photoshoot. It was very difficult for me to select the best photographer as I was from Canada and came to the USA for the wedding. So, I had no option to meet personally before finalizing the contract. I started a chat with her and she was easy to talk to. I was dreading wedding pictures because every time I’ve had professional pictures taken they are all “move your hand slightly up” and make you do awkward poses. A lot of the wedding photographers I was meeting implied they would be making me feel awkward or they were just outrageous prices. After a short minute of conversation with Irina, I knew she was going to get along with my wife and wedding ceremony. Irina provided great direction without making my wife and I feel uncomfortable posing. She was an amazing value for the level of service and the pictures turned out amazing :) I highly suggest contacting Irina for a quote for your wedding! <3 D&S

Working with Adrielly was an amazing experience. She truly made our wedding most special, and went above and beyond with her photography and even delivering the photos to us. I highly recommend Adrielly. So grateful that we had her capture our day.

Brian was the only vendor on our wedding day who performed his job perfectly. He's everything you would want in a wedding photographer. He showed up early. He rolled with all curveballs we threw at him. He's a lot of fun to be around (this is actually pretty important because you spend a lot of time with your photographer on your wedding day). And not only did all our photos come out great, but we even received them all early. Throughout the entire wedding process (which was over two years and during COVID) Brian was extremely reliable and professional every step of the way. [And I'm an absurdly critical person.] Overall, I would definitely hire Brian again and I honestly hope our paths cross again some day!

My initial review was based on Frank's availability for my wedding. It was all downhill after the photos were taken. 95 % of my requested photo croppings, enhancements, etc...WERE NOT DONE. The album size I requested WAS NOT the ALBUM size he ordered. The photos for the album and loose photos for myself and family were cropped according to HIS LIKES ONLY-- only 5% were of the size requested (some 4 x 6 inch photos). He obviously did not order from my final order request submitted, yet has been trying to force the album upon me as, "This is EXACTLY what you ordered, " when he knows it is not. He even stated to me on the phone (as I live outside of Massachussettes now) words very close (I quickly wrote them as he said them)."WHY would I ask YOU FOR YOUR opinion, I'm the photographer I DO WHAT I LIKE, NOT WHAT YOU think is right..." Wow!! And this is the 21st century? Whether or not Frank knew I was the professional woman that I am today (a professional woman who worked her way through college (Harvard) and medical school (USC) without a penny contribution from ANYONE else) I do expect another professional or non-prof. to treat me with courtesy, and to not try to usurp my dignity, the way Frank has been doing. Sincerely, Belle

We found Dyuti (Studio Art and Memories) through Thumbtack, and are extremely happy we chose him to help document our civil ceremony wedding. After getting to know each other via two phone calls and multiple emails, we could tell he is extremely passionate about photography and professional in his services. His prior sample photographs on his website were also outstanding, and we felt very comfortable having chosen him for the actual ceremony day. Dyuti was also extremely flexible on the day-of with some last-minute logistical changes, and we can’t appreciate him enough for his understanding. He helped capture the short civil ceremony with a Justice of the Peace, and then we went for an outdoor photo session afterwards in a nearby local park. During the photoshoot, Dyuti clearly had an eye for taking shots that wonderfully incorporated the background scenery. He had good pose suggestions, and we had a great experience. Turn around was very quick, with sample photos (4-5 key moments) provided later that evening, and then the full set approximately 1 week later. We are extremely happy we chose Dyuti to help capture our magical day.
