Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want.

Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June.

Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

How many photos should you get from a wedding photographer?

A professional wedding photographer will usually supply their clients with several hundred photos (200, 300, 400 or 800 and more). Some might even provide more than 1,000 photos. It ultimately depends on the photographer.

Wedding photographers will usually take several thousand photos but cut them down to the keepers. They also have to edit these photos. Typically, they will provide them to the clients on a digital hard drive, as an online download or even in a photo album with beautiful decorations.

How long do wedding photographers stay?

A wedding photographer usually expects to work a full day. This gives them time to photograph the venue, cake, rings, shoes, centerpieces, invitations and other aspects of the wedding before the guests arrive. It also allows them time to get photos of the bride and groom alone, as well as the hair and makeup process and fun personality pictures. Then, they will work through all the parts of the wedding.

What pictures should be taken at a wedding?

On your wedding day, your photographer should take pictures of the couple getting ready for the wedding, as well as a fun personality picture before activities begin. They should also photograph showstoppers like the bouquet, invitations, shoes, reception space, cake, centerpieces, rings and the veil. A generational photo with parents or grandparents is also special. There should also be photos of the bride and groom alone, the ceremony, the confetti-filled exit, and hair and makeup.

When should you take wedding photos?

Couples can take wedding photos before their actual ceremony, during cocktail hour (before the reception), during the wedding reception or even after their wedding. The least stressful time to do it is often before the ceremony when hair and makeup generally look their best, temperatures are usually lower because it’s earlier in the day and the couple won’t have to think or worry about it for the rest of the day.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

We hired Frank to take photos of our wedding. We were very pleased with his friendliness, timeliness in getting the photos to us and the quality of the photos. He was very accommodating in wrangling a couple of large groups for photos and for our requests for different locations for photo-taking.

Jemima and her husband (who did videography) were an amazing duo that documented my sister's wedding in a beautiful way! Jemima was very responsive and offered a wedding package at a great value for a Boston wedding. She and her husband were very fun and friendly and great at working with the chaos of a large wedding party. The photos are beautiful and artistic and edited in a very professional way. I highly recommend her for weddings!

Daniel was very responsive to all of my questions and extremely accommodating with the constant changes due to the pandemic. On the day of our wedding, Sophie was our photographer. She was amazing! Very sweet and thorough. It was very bright that day and she did her best to capture our photos from all angles. Would definitely recommend!

The wedding photographer I had hired initially, had to cancel because of testing positive for COVID-19, just 2 days before our wedding. Daniel was a savior and agreed to do the shoot at the last moment. He drew up the contract pretty fast and was so helpful. On the day of the wedding, he was on-time, patient and made us feel so comfortable with the entire shoot, given that this is our first shoot and we both are very shy. The photos are exceptional and were delivered just a little less than a week later which is pretty fast. You can't go wrong with hiring him! We can't wait to do another shoot with him!

My husband and I recently got married. And anyone planning a wedding knows how stressful and hectic it can get while planning for your special day. You want everything to be absolutely perfect, and you want to make sure your special day and all the details will be memorialized by capturing everything in beautiful photos that will last a lifetime. So choosing the right photographer is crucial. And we got super lucky on this end to find Dyuti Majumbar from Art & Memories. We had booked to meet with a lot of photographers, and the first photographer that with met with is Dyuti. We went into his home which is also his office. He was super friendly and hospitable. I remember walking into his hallway and living room and was loving all the wedding canvas that he had displayed from his previous weddings. He had prepared a beautiful presentation that he walked us through, and asked a lot of questions in detail of our wedding and how we met and he was truly trying to understand who we were as a couple and our vision. After he walked us through what his vision was and all the events of the day and how he would approach it. You could tell that this was not just a job for him, this was his passion, it wasn't about just taking photographs but truly creating art and beautiful long lasting memories, and that's exactly what he did for us. My husband and I didn't even think twice about it, and hired him right away and cancelled all the meetings with the other photographers. A week before the wedding, Dyuti went to our wedding venue and the surrounding areas to study the place we would be getting married and what would be the best places for photographs. The day of the wedding everything went perfect and Dyuti made sure to capture all the beautiful moments. When the pictures were ready, they were absolutely gorgeous! We absolutely love them and look at them all the time. Cannot wait to get the album and showcase it to everyone! Oh and did I mention that the albums are state of the art and made in Italy?! We highly recommend Dyuti from Art and Memories to anyone who is looking to capture beautiful memories whether is your special day or any special occasion! We know that this isn't the last time working with Dyuti and looking forward to him capturing our special moments.

We hired Liesl to photograph our City Hall wedding. We wanted photos that looked true to us (not boring or canned-looking), and Liesl delivered! We were impressed by how committed she was to getting great shots and how creative she was. In addition, she was very honest with pricing and decreased the cost of our package because the shoot ran shorter than anticipated. We would hire her again.

Jeannie was wonderful and accommodating during the photoshoot. She gave us many great suggestions on our poses and made sure that we had a memorable wedding. However, after the photo session and taking the check, her response was really slow. Editing pictures took longer than it was stated in the contract. Our wedding was on September 27, 2019 (now January, 2020) and we have not received the USB with our pictures even though it was a part of the contract.

Liesl was everything you could ask for in a wedding photographer. She was very professional, showing up earlier than we requested to scout the site for some amazing shots. She also made us feel comfortable for the candid shots and made it very easy to get all of our pictures.

So grateful to Justina for photographing my wedding! The pictures were a little slow getting to us, but that's more than made up for by how many there are and the fantastic quality. I hate having my photo taken, but Justina didn't make it awkward. She captured the goofy dynamic of my family perfectly. She was also great about being available by text, and keeping us updated. Plus, her rates were reasonable, no scary surprises there. All in all we're really happy with her work. Thanks Justina!

Tony was great to work with! We had a small wedding with close friends and family at Boston City Hall, followed by a luncheon after. He helped plan things out in advance, showed up early, had great ideas for photos, and was low-key and relaxing to shoot with. He was also very respectful of us wanting privacy because of an unusual situation, and agreed not to include us in online portfolios. We considered several photographers, and are really glad we went with Tony. I'd definitely recommend him, and we'd certainly work with him again if we have occasion to. Thanks!

We hired this unprofessional person for our wedding invitation photography. On the last minute, before I park my car, she called me and cancelled out. We planned for this the entire day. She left us in despair and rush to scramble and find another person which is highly unlikely to happen over the weekend. If Thumbnail does supervise this process, they better filter out/cast out this people. She literally told me that she has to go because she forgot that she has another event scheduled

We had an amazing experience with Justina at our intimate wedding celebration dinner. She was professional and laid back at the same time, made us feel at ease and have fun throughout the entire photo shoot. She told us exactly how to pose, which made for some amazing pictures! I like high fashion and posed pictures, my husband loves candids, and she delivered both. She was accommodating and flexible when we had to change plans in the last minute. She’s really great and cannot recommend her enough. Thanks so much Justina!!!

Where do I start? I hired David for my small wedding ceremony it should have been for no more than an hour. A day before the wedding I was told he would not be the photographer but he would send someone else, which was fine. They got to my event late, and started hotboxing the car while I was inside until one of my guest went to ask them if they were the photographers. They looked more lost then anything during the event then anything and it was my sister in law that had to tell them well take pictures now. At the end the day ended on a good note, but after 3 weeks I still did not have my finished product I just had the pictures of me and my husband getting married and no pictures with my family which is what I had exactly asked for. Communication was terrible after the ceremony did not get updates had to ask what was going on to be finally told my pictures were lost somehow now on my special day I do not get to have those pictures with my family that traveled far to be there, I rarely get to see them due to distance and now I don’t have that. David offered a free family shoot which served me nothing as I in my last weeks of pregnancy and have no time to buy once again plane tickets to get everybody back to Boston and shoot some pictures. I was not reimbursed for an unfinished job, they did not delivered as half of what I asked for was missing. I understand some mistakes happen but when your photographers come in late and get high that really makes me question how reliable their services are and how much of a mistake this really was.

I was really excited to work with Brian, and was absolutely over the moon that he was available on the day of our wedding. I was really hoping he'd bring his A game to the table offered to pay him 15% more than what he asked. We scheduled an exploratory trip one moth before the wedding (it was at Boston Public Library) and we discussed the possibilities and the angles and generally the strategy for the photoshop (we only had one hour for that). Brian dismissed my concern about light equipment, and said flash would be enough. On the day of the wedding he arrived late... that was disturbing but we moved on. The photoshoot was strange because he kept switching lenses and a lot of time was wasted. During the ceremony he was REALLY FAR away from where I was with my fiancé. The processed pictures were supposed to arrive 3-4 weeks after the event, it actually took 2 month. No big deal, but yet another red flag. I insisted on the raw pictures (for which he charged me on top of the fee I payed initially) and the minute I saw them I already knew that hiring him was a mistake. The entire ceremony was butchered..... the beauty of the moment was absolutely ruined. I had to take the raw pictures and have them professionally photoshopped to have something to hold on to as memory... you can see a raw image attached. Virtually 95% of pictures of the ceremony look the same, with the people sitting in the front row covering the wedding dress and the flowers on both sides.... Brian did try to make it up to me at the end and processed some of the photoshopped pictures. Unfortunately, that also didn't work out because the pictures where erased from the drive before I had a chance to download them... I am giving Brian 2 stars because there were indeed some amazing pictures at the very beginning pho the shoot, sadly that is not enough to make up for the lost moment that no money can buy... I am honestly baffled by these reviews because my experience was not even close to what people claim here. My advice, if you have an upscale, black tie event, do not hire Brian. You really need to pay a bit more and hire 2 photographers each with a different type of lens and an area of focus (on close ups vs more entourage pictures) and potentially a 3rd person to handle the light.
