"My husband and I have been taking salsa lessons with Steven since July 2013. We started with weekly private lessons and transitioned to twice monthly small group classes. In Summer 2014, our schedule shifted to private lessons once or twice monthly, though we hope to return to small group classes when they are available. Steven has a wealth, depth, and breadth of dance experience. He has sharp observation skills and an amazing understanding of body mechanics. He explains and demonstrates correct technique in very relatable terms. He offers constructive and encouraging feedback. We appreciate how we’ve developed a collaborative approach. After our first two group classes, Steven asked us how it was going for us. As the least experienced couple in the class, I told him that we struggled with the partner rotations- this was especially true for my husband because the leader in partner dancing has the much harder role. From that conversation, he adjusted the class format so that everyone benefited. Nowadays, I may write to Steven a few days in advance to tell him we want to review some figures; he’ll accommodate that at the start of the lesson, followed by something new he’d like to teach us. In addition, he offers insight and tips on social dancing. My husband calls Steven “the Dance Whisperer.” Whether you are brand new to salsa or looking to brush up, Steven has much to offer."

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.
