Everything was 5 star from the initial contact, to the wonderful care given to my senior dog including giving her a much needed bath. Cathy was wonderful in every way. I couldnt have asked for better. I highly recommend her. She has a true love of animals and the knowledge to go with it; and most of all her love.

I have a 1y/o yorkshire and maltese mixed dog with serious separation anxiety and some behavior issues. I was going through the dog trainers in my area and Jennifer caught my attention immediately- the review was almost 100% positive, saying how helpful and responsive she is. We scheduled a meeting and I ended up training & boarding my dog with her for about a month. The result was impressive: he's crate trained, he becomes quiet in the car, no more excessive barking... She even found out his favorite raw food and changed his diet...He used to have kibbles and wouldn't eat much every day.. Now he finishes every meal within 2 mins! He looks super healthy now!!! I'm definitely gonna board my dog with her again. Training and boarding are both amazing!!! SHE'S THE BEST!!

Peter was very helpful. He specifically helped us with our puppy's barking, leash manners and hyperactive behavior. We've had puppy training with our dog at Petsmart but hired Peter to help with these small problem areas and he helped us a lot in just 1 hour. I'd definitely hire him again if need be.

Ok, I am telling you guys that Sandy Nelson is the Mary Poppins of dog training. I can not believe how easy she made it to learn how to get Ruby, my Saint Bernard, to actually listen (Ruby will now sit for treats). Today was the first lesson for my new girl "Babs". Babs is a Bassett Hound and like all hounds she is pretty dopey. Her first lesson went fantastic. With Sandy's help I am going to have two well behaved pooches. I can NOT say enough good things about The Pawsitive Experience. I am so grateful to have found Sandy on here.

Lori has been working helping us with basic training with our 2 Bernese dogs (female, 4yr and male, 2yr) and we have learned how to use the training to manage dog aggression with our male. Lori is very flexible, always on time and came to our house for the training and she also met us at the park so she could evaluate our male around other dogs.

I was dogsitting my parent's 12 year old Yorkie, who demonstrated classic signs of fear aggression and was very territorial in the home. When we took him for walks he would bark and snap at other dogs on the path. On his first visit Mike brought treats and notepads for us to take notes, and he stopped our little yorkie's barking in its tracks and demonstrated immense patience. Our dog even bit him on their first meeting, but Mike didn't miss a beat! With his therapy dog Finn we worked through our dog's aggression. Finn was never out of control and was as patient as Mike with our dog. The dog that we currently have compared to the dog that we initially brought to Mike are as different as night and day! We only had four sessions with Mike, but he is able to socialize off-leash with other dogs now (he doesn't play with them, but he's able to just be around them, which is so much better than before). And when we walk him he's now able to greet other dogs without trying to bite them, so we no longer get scared every time we see another dog walking on the street. Lastly, our Yorkie used to drag his feet while walking, trying to sniff every little thing. After our first few meetings with Mike he showed us how to get our dog to walk at a better pace, and to follow us better. Walks that used to take us an hour now take us about 20 minutes! I highly recommend his training! Not only did he drive out early every Saturday, but he also never complained about Davis Square's parking situation.

It's hard to know who to choose when hiring any professional. I have an 8 month old German Shepherd, and after doing much research trainers, I decided to go with ACT K9. I was so impressed from the very beginning! During the evaluation, I met John and Lindsey and 2 of John's dogs. I have never met more trained dogs in my life. John's interaction with them was amazing. A week later we started training my dog, Sasha. After one lesson, she was already learning to heel. We have only had 2 lessons so far, but Sasha is already listening so much better. John and Lindsey really know what they're doing. The training is as much for me as it is for my dog. I'm so happy I chose them!!!

I was extremely nervous about dropping my dog off with a stranger. Lucky for me, it turned out that I was able to watch videos of Becca (our trainer) training other dogs for weeks before I dropped off my girl. Throughout the two week board and train, Becca answered every single text from me, sent videos and pics and kept me completely updated on all aspects of our pup's journey. During the transition period, she spent 2.5 hours showing us everything that Nala had learned and made sure that my husband and I could operate the equipment, use the same commands and elicit the same reactions from her. Becca was patient, extremely knowledgeable and quite obviously LOVES dogs. I am looking forward to seeing how far we can take our smart pup now that we have a better understanding of how to work with her. THANK YOU!!!! You all are the BEST!

Zippity Do Dog catered to both of my dogs separate needs (lab mix and am staff) and worked well to help us learn the proper way to train. Very professional and knowledgeable about multiple positive ways to modify behaviors of dogs undergoing training. Flexibile to scheduling and available to answer any questions we had between training sessions. We are very satisfied with Zippity Do Dog and intent on taking more training sessions in the future!

Excellent is an understatement. This is more than just obedience training. It is insight to the dog/human relationship, from the dogs point of view. I didn't think I could change the behavior of my 4 1/2 year old dog, but I was mistaken. I just needed to stop doing all the wrong things. Don't go elsewhere just to realize you should have made Progressive Canine Dog Training and Behavioral Services your first stop!

Noelle was great! We came to her for aggression and destructive behavior, and she surpassed everything we expected. We got Riley back a whole new dog!! She came to our house during training and coached us through her training process. We could not be happier with her and the care and training of our dog. I'd give her 6 stars if I could!

Vera has been incredibly helpful for my dog, Nala, and me. She tailors her sessions to the people and dogs in her class, so everyone is getting their issues and needs met. She's big on 'meeting you where you are at" and helping you understand your dog so you are able to meet them where they are at. When she gives you feedback and suggestions, she is sensitive in her approach and you end up feeling more confident in your ability to train and interact with your dog, rather than feeling like you're a complete failure. You definitely have to put in your fair share of work outside of classes, and she checks in with you to see how you're progressing, which helps hold you accountable. Since beginning our work with Vera, I have noticed that Nala is calmer and looks to me more often for guidance. She responds more quickly when I correct her as well. Nala and I have more work to do but Vera has helped us get the ball rolling in the right direction. I highly recommend Vera for dog owners who want to have a more cooperative dog!

We love dogs! We just got a puppy in December. We are training her to sit, give paws, lay down, stay, come and especially how to walk with a leash. I am looking for clients who need to have their dog(s) walked, fed and watered at anytime of the day. Weekdays are preferable but we can work together to make sure all your needs are met! Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
