I recently purchased a home and was not familiar with the boiler system. I had no heat in the house, and Dan was able to quickly identify the problem. He explained how this particular boiler works and also showed me what to do if the same issue came up again. I would definitely call him if I have any other issues in the future and would highly recommend him.

I hired Mark on an urgent notice to replace/install a new gas water heater as the old one was leaking. He promptly responded with a generous offer with a surprisingly affordable pricing (lower than other estimates from the site). He met my demands for a high quality, professional and neat in a timely manner. I was happy with the result. Mark held my high regards for future projects.

Currier North was one of 5 quotes that I received for the installation of a high-efficiency heat pump system for my home. The owner, Mark, answered all questions and won our confidence with his answers, price and experience. The installation took a bit longer than expected due to my ceiling material, but he did not charge me extra. The crew was great and cleaned up after themselves. We trusted them enough to let them continue to do some work while we went out of town on vacation. The inspection went without a hitch, all warranty materials were handed over and he even left a box of filters. Very thoughtful. I recommend Currier North highly.

We had a pipe burst on us and we're without heat. The pipe was in a difficult location, but Dan did not balk at the work. Eric and Dan responded promptly to the request for service. They came in the next day and did great work. I highly recommend them.

Mahdi is beyond fantastic and a true professional. This was my second time hiring him for a job at a different property and he exceeded my expectations once again. This time around, he successfully installed a water source heat pump and gave me a great price for a top-of-the-line (Carrier) unit. His HVAC knowledge makes him an industry leader in the Boston area. Do not look any further when it comes to looking for an HVAC professional. Mahdi is extremely responsive, honest, and truly cares about his clients best interests to get jobs done efficiently and effectively.

North Shore HVACR was a lifesaver, the AC was gone in two rental units. Another contractor had transportation issues getting the job done (it happens), however we were now in a heat wave the day before the 4th of July. Lewis' team came to the rescue, even on the holiday, and had both units cooling off our great tenants in no time. This level of professional dependability is a treasured asset.

We woke up to 2 degrees Fahrenheit and NO HEAT! We tried reaching our regular gas furnace maintenance contractor and several other local contractors without any luck. When we found Tim through Thumbtack we were so grateful. He quickly assessed our issue over the phone, purchased the part and got to our house that same day. Thank goodness! Not only is a he a professional but very personable too. We plan to contract Tim again to install a humidifying system. Thanks Tim!

Lee and Scott were extremely responsive to my urgent issue regarding basement flooding due to sump pump failure. Lee made himself available almost immediately and showed up on time, was very friendly and knowledgeable about all things plumbing related. He was able to quickly diagnose the problem, re-dig the sump pump pit and install a new sump pump system quickly, but thoroughly. He was not satisfied until it was working perfectly and made efforts to save me money on parts, etc and didn't charge for some "little things" others would of added to the bill. Most importantly, after the job was complete he has been checking in to ensure the sump pump is still working properly. Lee was also very patient in answering my questions and explaining the issue to me a few times until I fully understood what was causing the problem. Pricing was very reasonable. I would highly recommend Lee in the future and will surely use his services again if needed.

I was frightened and apprehensive about the day my furnace would decide to go to the furnace Cemetery. Well that day happened on Friday October 13th. The furnace clearly malfunctioned and I was forced to replace it. On that very same day I use Thumbtack to locate a technician, in less than 72 hours I had been contacted by Mike at TopKnotch, had an appointment scheduled and had a brand new furnace and thermostat installed. It was absolutely painless, definitely affordable, and literally one of the most positive experiences I have ever had with a home repair.

Val did a great job. Handled the electric and a/c work. Reasonable price compared to the big companies that I got a quote from before I found Val. I had the mitsubishi mini split 15k btu heat pump installed. So far it works great for a/c in august. Waiting for winter to see how it does for heat.

I hired Ron to convert an old oil-based heating system to a tankless gas-based hot water/heating system. I just can say the job was done to perfection !!! He did the job in 2-1/2 days, including the removal of the old boiler, water tank and oil tanks. The piping routes were very well laid-out to minimize changes in the old system. He obtained all necessary permits from City Hall, got clearance from the city inspector, gave me a rebate form for the heater had a very reasonable price for the job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
