Neil was such a pleasure to work with. He is super responsive. Every message I sent was responded to within about 20 min. He was helpful in guiding me as to what to purchase. I hired him to install lights, bathroom exhaust, fix a hole in the wall, fix windows that won't stay open and fix draft coming in our front door. He showed up on time. He even walked me through how to wire a ceiling light b/c I wanted to learn. He has to come back b/c the ceiling exhaust fan I purchased didn't fit right and he even offered to pick up one he knows will work and is coming back. He was such a pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend his services!

Ben was very friendly and responsive. He helped me install the glass door for the shower. The glass door is really really heavy so I was really concerned that he is coming alone and doing the job all by himself. But his price was irresistible and his availability also matches mine perfectly. Nonetheless, he showed up early and finished the job very nicely. He also cleaned up the dusts after he finished. I am very happy how it turned out. Highly recommend Ben.

He was so nice, professional and he did an wonderful job. Best handyman ever.

Erik and his business partner were great. Very flexible and willing to work with us in order to get the job done. They had a great attitude and came up with suggestions when they thought was necessary to enhance the job. The job ended up being more than just assembling furniture. Hiring Erik through an online service was outside my comfort zone because I usually work with individuals referred by friends etc. However, I reside in a different state, had no contacts in MA., and the job needed to get done. Erik provided his phone number and I was able to talk to him several times and prearranged everything beforehand. We had basically a weekend to get everything done so my son could move in before classes began. I pre bought paint from a hardware store convenient for Erik to get to and while I was flying to MA, they were painting the room. The next morning I met them and while his business partner continued with the painting, Erik went with us to the local IKEA to help us re-purchase the items because my pre-order from Ikea never arrived in time. Therefore, we would have not had any furniture to assemble. Luckily, we found all the items we needed at IKEA and he transported those items to my son’s room. He also went with us to a local Home Depo and gathered additional items needed although it was not in our original plan. We ended up buying a window shade, a wall mounting bracket for TV, etc. By midday Sunday, the entire work was finished to our satisfaction. They worked early evening on Friday, the entire day Saturday, and half a day on Sunday. The room was painted (walls, ceiling, door, moldings, and closet), they repaired the tile floor and helped us set up a large area rug, they mounted the window shade, shelves on the wall, and the TV. In addition, they assembled all the furniture which consisted of a full bed, a desk, a 6 drawer dresser, a free standing shelf, and a unit over desk. We would have never been able to complete this job without the help of Erik and his business partner.

Felipe and his crew were responsible for installing all interior wood trim for our recent home addition and renovation. They were also tasked with various and miscellaneous carpentry work including door and door hardware installation, and fabrication and installation of several custom millwork items (fireplace mantel; powder room sink top, custom shelving). All work was completed carefully, expeditiously and with a smile. Felipe and his team proved to be an invaluable resource to help keep our project on schedule. We could not be more pleased with the service. I would highly recommend FW Home Improvement.

Boston Best Construction was great to work with. They did a complete reno of the first and second floor of our new home - a mid-18th century first period colonial. Eduardo and his team did everything including structural work, a complete remodel of our kitchen and bathrooms, HVAC work, and refinishing our historic wide pine flooring. He and his company were professional, delivered on their timelines, and we love our newly renovated home. Couldn’t be happier.

John installed trimwork around windows, baseboard, and a door (also installed the pre-hung door) in a small bedroom we were remodeling. John did an excellent job and I would highly recommend him. He even pointed out and fixed a problem we were having with our front entry door free of charge. Great work at a fair price. Will definitely be calling John again for future projects.

I give Bruce a 5 star rating. He did general carpentry jobs – replaced exterior rotted wood and door framing, installed a storm door, trimmed out a bathroom post dry walling – for me at my primary home. Bruce’s work is meticulous and exact. He dealt with every surprise and irregularity uncovered, which is many in a house built in 1902, with professional accuracy and style. I am more than pleased with the results.

I needed some finish work done in my basement: replacing damaged basement window and installing closet doors. Barry did a great job researching different selections for these items, so that I could make the best choice. Then, he installed them very promptly and efficiently. Would definitely hire him again.

Adonias was very easy to work with. He is friendly, creative, and flexible. He has a very busy company, so sometimes my projects took longer than expected, but he is good about communicating. Eagle7 remodeled two bathrooms for me (I will upload pictures after I finish cleaning and organizing them). They took out two fiberglass shower/tub units, built a new tub with tile surround and a tiled walk-in shower with glass door. They replaced sinks and countertops, replaced flooring (tile in one, vinyl plank in the other), repaired some plumbing, replaced fan/light combos, and built out walls where needed. In addition, Adonias and his crew helped with a few extra requests as they came up, without complaint. We were updating most of our house this month, so there were many contractors in and out, a dog, kids, and general chaos. The crew took it all in stride, they were patient and worked around our schedule. Prices were very reasonable, and they worked with me to think through what could be salvaged/reused to minimize costs. Adonias also sourced materials as needed, not overbuying or upcharging. Highly recommend Eagle7.

We hired Steve to fix some loose tiles and grouting in our custom tiled shower. He was very knowledgable on the best way to fix the underlying issues that were causing the loose tiles, fixed those problems and left the shower better than we expected. He also left the job site clean every day and was a pleasure to work with. We would not hesitate to hire Steve again.

I am 79 years old and have had a few repairs done to my house but Chad Johanson is by far the nicest.most affordable, and most caring handyman I've ever had. Chad's #1 goal is to make sure you are happy when he leaves. I signed a contract for $1325.00 to have my shower tile replaced and taken away and to cut 4 closet doors that were too long after new carpet. Chad came up with an idea on my shower to save money as I am very looking to spend as little as possible which I went along with and the new estimate is $625.00 less then original job. His work is great and I will use him again in the spring to repair my deck. You will not go wrong with Chad Johanson.

He even pointed out something about our shower door that nobody else had mentioned. He cares about his work and his customers! Highly recommended.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
