I had such a hard time finding a legit piano mover in RI. Somehow all legit piano movers I could find are based in other States and wouldn't move pianos from and to Rhode Island. In fact I was forced to hire a regular mover because of this and had a traumatic experience watching them moving my baby grand from my previous apartment to the storage. The regular mover sweared they move grand pianos all the time but they clearly didn't know what they're doing!! I almost had anxiety attack watching them work, not only for the fate of my piano but also for the movers' back- they could have hurt themselves!! So I was so grateful when Omar responded on thumbtack when it's time to move my baby grand from the storage to my new apartment, both in Rhode Island. He was the only piano mover who responded, the others were all regular movers who claimed they knew how to move grand pianos! I still wasn't sure at first because none of my pianist friends in Boston had used them before. But not only Omar gave a lower rate than the other piano movers, but he knows exactly what to do in all situation and they did their job very well and very efficiently. The previous mover that moved my piano to the storage did so many dumb things and made the job more challenging for Omar when he reassembled my piano at my new apartment (there was even one screw missing!!!), but Omar didn't complain, he just replaced the missing screw and didn't even charge me extra. Thank God Omar knows the pianos very well. I'm so glad and grateful he responded to my request on thumbtack. I definitely will hire All pro piano mover again next time I move!!

We had Tom move us from our 1 bedroom apt in the city to our new condo. Tom and his guys showed up on time and ready to work and after a stop at a storage unit, we were still done in record time!! They had to disassemble and reassemble furniture and got our couch into the new place through a side window flawlessly! They were completely professional and I have already highly recommended them to family members who are going to be moving. Thanks, Boston best movers!!!

Flawless, courteous service from start to finish. Alex sent me a quote instantly, and stayed in touch the whole time. The movers, Divia and Tavas showed up on time, packed the small amount of furniture we had with care, and did a phenomenal job. The price was the best. Highly recommend!

I really liked these guys a lot!!! Eric was great about getting back to me right away. They showed up a few minutes early and went right to work. I felt as if the place was a mess but he assured me it was ok and took care of everything, even helping pack my car and putting out trash bags. I was so grateful. They were extremely helpful and never once complained. I had them for 5hrs and the cost turned out to be less than what I expected to pay, which was a pleasant surprise. I’ll definitely be using them again if I ever move and refer them to anyone looking for movers.

Never in my life have I encountered a group of harder working guys. They made my move so easy.. They worked like dogs making sure everything was perfect . Leandro and his crew were pros at assembling and disassembling the furniture and at the end of the day the price was fantastic!! If you need a mover you would be crazy not to hire Spartan movers and ask for Leandro and his crew!

The guys at Hebert Movers were great! I had a one bedroom move from the suburbs to the city and the crew of three did it very fast and efficiently! The truck broke down in the morning so they did show up very late but Frank called regularly with updates and did the best he could given the circumstances. Would recommend Hebert Movers!

As we all know relocating is always hard but if you can delegate some of that trauma to a professional moving company, it feels a tiny bit better. For our last move it was Step-by-step movers. Their men know exactly how to unload your worries. They are very apt at their job, always showing up on time, packing everything with great precision and loading the valuables securely to their vans. My move was as smooth as it could ever be, thanks to these guys.

The fellas were great! I had a little snafu with my POD (some things had shifted during travel) and the door wouldn't open! But, the movers were just as determined as I was to make it happen, and once they got the door up, the rest of the unloading was quick and smooth sailing. Thank you all so much!!! I would recommend without hesitation.

We had 3 large items delivered which we realized we couldn't get up our stairs. Reached out to JP Moving in the evening and arranged next day (!) hoisting up the back balcony. Our movers came early (after checking with us), got everything up and inside where we wanted it, and put away the boards we'd brought out for supports, all in less time than we'd anticipated. Super happy with how everything went!

I recently moved from Boston, MA to southern Maine. Smart Penny sent me a truck and two guys to move everything out of my 2 bedroom second-floor apartment to my new 3 bedroom first-floor apartment. It took three hours to get everything out (they wrapped all my furniture for me) and one to get everything back in. They even helped move some of the crap furniture left behind by the previous tenant. The movers worked so efficiently it actually ended up taking longer to drive up than it did doing the actual labor. Fortunately, Smart Penny gave me an excellent deal. Even though Maine and Massachusetts could be considered a "long distance move", they considered it a local move and charged me a flat rate for travel time, which saved me well over $200 thanks to all that traffic. I would definitely highly recommend them!

I had a great experience with Move & Care. Two guys did my move. They were on-time, efficient, careful, and very nice. They went above and beyond any movers I've had before. The estimate was accurate, and their pricing is by far the best I could find in Boston. Will absolutely use them every time I need movers in the future!!

Flash moving company was awesome. They were reliable, careful, on time, and completed their job without any problems. I didn’t have a ton of stuff to move but they still were efficient, wrapped my mattress, dresser and headboard. I had some bad luck in scheduling movers and flash was a pleasant experience. Thanks again.

I have moved enough times in my life to know how stressful it can be and that most times things just don’t work out as expected. I used Xpress Movers for my last two moves and both were absolutely amazing. This last time I had some challenging stairs to deal with but the teams had a positive attitude and were willing to work VERY hard to make everything work. I was blown away and they took a stressful day and made it work better than I could have hoped.

The movers at AmerApex Moving could not have done a better job moving our belongings over 2,000 miles away. The crew was on time, polite, very careful, and kept the move fun and in good spirits. Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
