I booked the project with OSA just one week before I moved in my new condo. There are plenty of jobs needed to be done, like install all appliances, replace old vanity, replace all old valves, replace new toilet, install new lights, put floor tile and wall tile in my bathroom, and so on. Thankfully, OSA finished all projects before the day I moved in with high work quality, I really appreciate it. Also, they are very trustful, I gave my home key to them so they can come any time to do the work. I would definitely recommend OSA to all my friends who needs to do electricity, plumb job for their house or condo.

Marc did a great job helping us with our move. He disassembled our furniture and reassembled it at our new house. He also hung a large picture on our wall, helped out as a second set of hands, patched some small holes in our previous apartment and took down some window shades. I'd recommend Marc to others!

Simply excellent. Trustworthy, most knowledgeable, and honest! He is the man doing the work and takes professional account for everything he does (not an interim jack rabbit). We first hired Steve to extend our chimney by 10 feet for an upward home addition under way. He perfectly matched the brick and mortar to our antique home original appearance. We then had Steve bring the fire place up to code by removing the old fire brick (brick where the heat is most hot at the fire cabinet), and extend then extend antique brick to the ceiling in the living room - on the first floor. What a beautiful job! Antique wood beam mantle and so on. It looks original to this house!

Lathan was wonderful to work with! He reframed a door for me on the inside and out. The house is 100 years old with detailed molding. He went above and beyond to find matching molding for the door. It came out perfect!! I also bought a porch swing only to find out there was no beam in my porch ceiling to hang it from. Lathan did a fabulous job removing a tongue and groove ceiling to install a beam and replace the ceiling after. He was fantastic about answering questions, scheduling, and overall a great and personable guy who I feel lucky to have met to help with the million and one things needed around the house. Thank you Lathan for the great job! -Kathy

Joe responded quickly, was completely professional and easy to work with. I will absolutely call Joe again if I need this kind of carpentry/repair house job done. Joe and his assistant (sorry can't recall name) replaced an aluminum siding piece that had blown off and did some gutter repair - not "big" jobs but ones that required professionals in my opinion. Glad to hear of Joe through Thumbtack.

Russell did a great job working through my list of to-do items while prepping to sell my home. He rehung a pesky bifold closet door that had been giving me trouble for years; it slides smoothly now. He was easy to work with and trustworthy - I was able to give him access to the house when I was at work. The job was done well and completed on time. I highly recommend him.

We hired Sean to do a few projects around our house. His team replaced the roof on our shed, removed our front steps and built us a new porch, replaced our front door, and replaced our bulkhead. Sean was always very prompt and responsive to all messages. He kept me in the loop and updated on where we were in each phase, what would be done, when payments were due, etc. I was very indecisive at times and he helped us navigate the decision-making process. Whenever we changed the scope of a project, he was able to change gears and meet our expectations without issue. He was committed to our satisfaction and he was always there to make sure the work was meeting his high standards. The folks who worked on our property were polite, efficient, and the work was always delivered as promised. His crew was also very kind to put up with my curious 4-year-old and the constant questions he would ask them. These little interactions really make a difference. Overall we have been very pleased with the work Sean has done for us. Our house is looking great again and we are very happy with the results.

V&C Painting and Construction INC helped install a costume chain linked gate for me and repair my chain linked fence. Joao came with an assistant and they were both a pleasure to work with. He was very professional, responsive, skilled, and was a pleasure to work with. He showed his knowledge of how to custom make a fence right and I appreciated his attention to detail in making sure that the fence was professionally built and also made my house looked great. They cleaned up all of their work and left my yard spotless. I will definitely hire him again for other projects around my house. Thank you!

We had water going behind our siding since the house was built and rotted out a exterior wall and leaking from above my electrical box. Construction Tech came right out, fit us into their schedule and got the job done quickly before we got more rain and within budget. Thanks construction tech!!!

Nivaldo did an amazing job here in my new house. One of the lost visible work is the new big composite deck, a new coat of pain in one of the sides of the house and last a new wall in my finished basement to create a home office space. I couldn’t be happier, next time I need some work in my house I’ll give them a call... and you should too!

We had complete vinyl siding and trim done on our house in Hooksett in May 2014. Jim arrived promptly for the estimate which was thorough and the price was fair. All work was performed by Jim and his brother (no sub contractors). They did a great job. Also cleaned up the worksite after each day. The entire job took about 3 weeks. No issues with the work thus far. Very satisfied.

Really positive experience working with Build Me Up. North end condo building with strict association and they delivered. We previously hired a contractor who was awful, he left us a bunch of pesky punch list items. Electrical, tiling, painting, installation of doors..the list was long..BMU did a great job. We will use again and recommend.

My husband and I purchased a new-to-us home this past November and the to-do wish list is a mile long. Our first big-ish project was having stairs built to an already existing deck. Xavier was wonderful to work with, he was very responsive to any questions, was on the job daily, and the stairs far exceeded my expectations. We look forward to working with Xcc Pro-Builders for our future projects.

Professional contractors, very conscientious of the fact that we were living in the house during construction and kept the work site clean and protected the rest of the house from dust and debris. Quality work with attention paid to detail.

I could not be happier with Jim and his guys and the work that they did. They are truly craftsmen. They completed all the work on time and on budget. They were able to pick up other jobs around the house without issue. They made my not so great attempts at carpentry look good again. I would definitely call Jim again whenever the need arises.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
