Steve was excellent my fence was a very challenging job and he was up for it and he quoted me a ridiculously low price so I ended up giving them a tip and I'm going to contract him to finish up the rest of it really appreciate a handyman like that!! He's flexible about the timing and he accomplishes what he promises he was owner of a fence company before so he really knew what he was doing.

Obed was outstanding in communicating with me, offered suggestions on materials that could make my fence last longer, and quickly and methodically completed a 280 foot fence in 2 days. The final day he spent cleaning up, and putting on the finishing touches. He also went out of his way to complete a couple of extra panels for me that boxed in an area that we hadn't previously discussed - it was over and above what I had expected. In addition, he leveled everything as he went, concreted all posts, and was there at 7:30am until dark each and every day. He was always pleasant, and had a great attitude. He also offered to do some brush clearing for me, so I am actually having him back this Saturday to complete that work. Thanks Obed! Will definitely hire again.

I can't say enough about Dan Hanna of Pro Cut & Clean Landscaping. I am so happy with the repairs that Dan's company did and now my fence looks like new. After getting two quotes for replacing my fencing, I looked into repairing it instead. Dan came by the same day that we made contact through Thumbtack, proposed what he would do to restore my fence, and estimated what it would cost. Well, they did the work yesterday in one day, and today had it power washed and now my fence looks beautiful, really like new at one-seventh the cost of a new fence. My thanks to Dan and his very professional team. Katherine of Burlington, MA

I couldn't be happier with FW Home Improvement and I am so grateful that I was able to find him through Thumbtack. Felipe and his partner were wonderful and easy to work with throughout our project. He was courteous, responsive and did quality work on our new fence for a reasonable price. I am hoping to have FW Home Improvement back soon to help with other projects in our home. Thank you so much Felipe and Thumbtack!

I am a tenant in Worcester in a triple decker. I live on ground floor and have fenced in yard with a dog who loves that sort of thing. Call me spoiled but I got used to that. In the recent high-wind weather, a large 20' section of fence blew over. I discovered the posts were never cemented. Much to my dismay, the landlords did not want to fix the fence. In addition to having a dog I now had to leash walk everywhere, the yard was open to theft where I have a fire pit, grill, patio furniture, etc. I also feared the fallen fence would continue to get damaged and become impossible to salvage at all. I posted on thumbtack and received several replies. Some estimates were so high, they blew my mind. Then there was Billy. Billy wasted no time. He came right out to my apartment. He was empathetic to the fact that I was paying out of pocket on a property that wasn't mine and had a couple ideas on how to keep costs down. He recommended I buy the material. I bought it same day and two days later my fence was dug, poured, and set. The best part is he beat the snow coming and was extremely conscientious of his work. The old fence sections had rotted and worn down to the point where they had to be cut to be re-seated. Billy left full size posts for when those sections need to be replaced. When they are, they will match the height of the posts. I have already recommended Billy to a colleague who renovates and flips houses as a side business. I, myself, work for a General Contractor in Worcester but concrete and fence work was too much for me to tackle myself. I've been around the industry and I know good people when I see them. Billy is a hidden gem. I'd love to keep him the best kept secret I know but I'd be doing him and his work a dissatisfaction. I would recommend him to anyone. Without hesitation.

I’m so glad to have connected with Jay. He came to quote a fence repair project and I was delighted to find that his skill set extended way beyond fencing. I’ve now also hired him to rebuild deck stairs as well as replace a kitchen interior wall and exterior window sill, both damaged by ice dams. Jay’s pricing is extremely fair, work is thorough and his communication is timely. I highly recommend him for any jobs you have around your home!

Mike was a pleasure to work with, from start to finish. Our yard was in very rough shape but Mike came and did all of the things I asked him to do (trim trees and hedges; cut back an overgrown lilac bush, remove any debris from the backyard, etc). Mike and his workman did an excellent job, and the price was very fair. I highly recommend Mike, and we will be hiring him again in the spring! :)

We hired V & C to replace an old falling apart wooden fence. From start to finish it was a pleasure working with Joao and his crew. They arrived early each morning and worked hard throughout the day. It was not always an easy task and involved a lot of custom sizing along our driveway. The finished product was better than I thought possible. They also could not have cleaned up more thoroughly then they did. We will definitely be using V&C for other work!

Overall was very satisfied. The price was good value for a large replacement patio and fence. Bruno and his crew were all very friendly and responsive to trying to address my concerns. My yard presented challenges due to pitch of yard and some stump removal. They worked hard to make it work. Took longer then I expected but some delays were unavoidable due to weather and paving company not providing the right color mixture of pavers. And I was not in a hurry anyway. Bruno always got back to me on my questions and issues. Felt they were hard working and very honest.

5/25/2016 - I contacted Tony for the removal of my fence, about 200 feet and everything about my experience was up front, honest, and done within the time frame that we discussed. Tony came and gave me a quote on the spot and then the work was done the following week once we had a stretch of no rain and good weather. You don't find a lot of people like Tony that are normal good guys that do good work. I would highly recommend anyone that needs something done around the house, he does great work for a fair price!!

Jonathan was very professional when it came to building a fence for me. He was referenced to me by a family friend since I am new to the metro west area and it was a great one. He is reliable and his work is solid, he gave me his personal phone and was able to answer my every question. He finished my vinyl fence in just a matter of days and it looks even and well done. I wouldn't hesitate recommending Forever Fence to any of my family or friends

Very reasonable price to repair fence, small job $600 including materials, stabilized fence posts with concrete, and replaced rails and posts, did job quickly, would have cost a lot more with other fence companies who do not bother with small gigs like this

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How many types of welding are there?

Welding is a method of fusing together two or more pieces of metal using electricity or flame. Welding is used to construct buildings, make metal sculptures, build and repair cars, make gates and furniture, and for many other practical and aesthetic uses. There are multiple types of welding. Here is an overview of the most popular methods:

  • Stick welding: Formally known as shielded metal arc welding, stick welding uses extreme heat applied at the seam of two separate metals to melt them together. A third (intermediary) metal may also be incorporated for added strength. As the metals cool, they are bonded together.
  • Metal inert gas (MIG) welding: Formally known as gas metal arc welding, MIG welding uses a tool to feed metal wire into the weld puddle while an electrical arc melts the wire, which will fuse to the base metal upon cooling.
  • Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding: Formally referred to gas tungsten arc welding, TIG welding is a similar process MIG welding, but instead of using a tool that continuously feeds metal wire into the weld puddle, the welder must hold and manually feed the stick.
  • Gas welding: A mix of flammable gas and oxygen is used to heat metal to the melting point.
  • Forge welding: Forging metal is an ancient art that involves heating two pieces of metal until they are molten, then hammering them together.

How long is welding training?

Because there are different paths to learning to weld, there’s no single timeline for welding training. Some people attend school part-time while working their current job, while others can focus full-time on their welding training courses. People interested in learning how to weld as a hobby can also take classes from professional welders, such as at KCMA & Services in Waterloo, Indiana.

Expect to take at least two years to go from welding newbie to American Welding Society Certified Welder. A junior college Certificate of Completion welding course is two semesters full-time, or 10 units of coursework. With this certificate, students are qualified for an apprenticeship or internship, rather than a full-time entry-level job. Welding apprenticeships range from 6,000 to 8,000 hours long, equalling three to four years at 2,000 hours per year. Some junior colleges, such as Cerritos College in the Los Angeles area, offer more in-depth welding programs that lead to different welding certifications, such as arc welding and tungsten gas arc welding. These take three to four semesters to complete, so you could be qualified for an entry-level job in about two years of full-time study. Alternatively, you can prepare for employment more quickly through an intensive vocational program at a trade school. For instance, Ohio’s Lincoln Electric Company offers a comprehensive program that prepares people for a welding career in just 20 weeks and 600 hours of hands-on instruction.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.
