I found myself in a pretty bad bind with very short notice. I won an estate sale on a metal lathe and no traditional rigging company could help me on such short notice. I thought "hmm, maybe a piano mover could help..." Omar replied back with a VERY amazing offer. Too amazing as I told him this would be a NIGHTMARE to move. I countered his offer with a fair price and we met less than a day later to do the lathe move. He was extremely fast and professional in every reply. REALLY impressed even before the move. If you are concerned about a heavy item, trust me when I tell you this lathe is much heavier than any piano out there. We estimated the weight to be at about 1500 lbs. Not only did John and Omar move this into my shop (an amazing feat on such short notice), they moved it OUT of a BASEMENT crawl space with terrible stairs and GRASS. They truly exceeded my expectations, the price was VERY fair for the tremendous effort they exerted, and they were extremely pleasant doing so. I couldn't be happier with All-Pro Piano Movers and you shouldn't hesitate to use them in your next move. They are amazing! Thank you Omar and John for completely bailing me out of my crisis. We had an odd moving job and the team at Boston Best Rate Movers handled coordination with my husband and me extremely well via email, Thumbtack message, and phone. They showed up on time to the original site, packed up our dining room set, and delivered it to our second site on time with no damage. They charged a flat fee as well which I really appreciate as hourly mover fees can vary wildly.

they moved a piano easily and transported it to its new home without incident. The movers were courteous but were about 45 minutes late for the job. I would recommend them to move your upright piano!

I decided to go with Born to Move because of the reviews and I'm so glad I did!! They had the best price out of the 5 movers, The people I spoke to over the phone were very helpful and I appreciated their confirmation call the day before. I got a call letting me know they were about 10 minutes away from my place on the morning of my move. The guys showed up right on time and were very careful to protect my furniture and belongings. They were speedy and very professional. I can't say enough good things about them. Thank you for such great service!

My husband and I needed movers in pinch and Real Deal was able to accommodate our move request on very short notice which I appreciated. The movers did arrive almost an hour late but that was expected due to the atrocious weather we've experienced in Massachusetts and they more than made up for their late arrival with their professionalism and pleasant demeanor when they arrived. The gentleman got straight to work followed my direction and were very friendly with my family the entire time they worked. The only factor stopping me from giving Real Deal 5 stars was the details of contract which weren't explicitly explained during our chat. I was advised several times there was no additional fee outside the hourly rate which wasn't accurate. All in all I would definitely use this company again and will recommend to several friends who are also purchasing homes.

Great experience! They arrived on time and the entire move was incredibly efficient. Two movers came very prepared, and they were ready to even take down my mounted TV. I would recommend Step by Step to any friend or family member.

I needed movers on 2/3 weeks notice just to do a "house clean-up" we had a lot of large items that needed to be put out for rubbish and also we are doing some renovating and we needed furniture moved to the basement. Perla is just wonderful, communication is great and I loved that she called the night before to confirm that we were ready. Fabian & Carlos were prompt, very polite and VERY hard working men. They had no issues with some of our over sized furniture. Very accommodating people. Thank you Very much and we look forward to hiring you after the renovation to help set the house back up.

Top Speed did an excellent job moving all our furniture from the second floor to the first floor. Husband and I had been moving things piece meal and decided it was too much for us, not being as young as we used to be. So on Sunday I contacted Thumbtack about movers, they put in touch with Top Speed who contacted me that day. We emailed back and forth, came to a good price and on Wednesday three strong, young men arrived at our home and moved all our furniture. What a relief to have that done for us. Well Done Michael Zazzara and Top Speed Moving and Storage LLC. Donna & Russ

I loved that Lexel gave me a fixed rate (no surprise charges!) and they quoted me much less than any other movers. They called me the day before to see if it would be okay to come earlier, and they called me around that time to let me know they were 15 minutes away. There were only a couple snags: I've never used movers before, so I didn't realize that they would ONLY take things that were packed in boxes (a liability issue, I guess, which I understand). I had a lot of thing packed in tote bags, open-top wicker totes, and laundry baskets, so I had to repack those at the last minute. This was a little stressful and lead to me having to make multiple trips with my own car - I wish I had known beforehand that everything had to be in a sealed box with a lid. I've been unpacking and my belongings seem to be in good shape so far. I've only found one box that appears to have had a rough trip (the box itself was damaged, and a smaller box inside was damaged too.)

The move went great. Movers did a great job picking up the pool table and an exceptional job reassembling it. The were extremely polite and courteous. My grandchildren loved watching them bring the table in. I would recommend them to anyone looking.

The fellas were great! I had a little snafu with my POD (some things had shifted during travel) and the door wouldn't open! But, the movers were just as determined as I was to make it happen, and once they got the door up, the rest of the unloading was quick and smooth sailing. Thank you all so much!!! I would recommend without hesitation.

These guys were the best movers I ever had. They made the move as smooth as possible and when it didn't go correctly (due to spacing at the new place, not because of anything they could control) they went above and beyond and figured out a solution. Would recommend them to anyone moving

I have moved enough times in my life to know how stressful it can be and that most times things just don’t work out as expected. I used Xpress Movers for my last two moves and both were absolutely amazing. This last time I had some challenging stairs to deal with but the teams had a positive attitude and were willing to work VERY hard to make everything work. I was blown away and they took a stressful day and made it work better than I could have hoped.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
