I don't know where to begin. I spent a significant amount of time researching dog trainers in the Boston area and i finally came across Jennifer on this amazing website (Thumbtack). I contacted Jennifer and she was incredibly responsive and empathetic. I was having trouble with my dog who is a sweet 80 pound lab mix. I rescued him a week before i contacted Jennifer. He was 7 and a half years old and the sweetest angel in doors. Unfortunately and unbeknownst to me, he was very dog aggressive. It was incredibly frustrating and stressful to own a dog aggressive dog. With these feelings and emotions i called Jennifer and she was able to breathe peace into my situation. After talking with her for 15 minutes i felt relief. She spoke directly to my issue and gave me her assurance that there would be a remedy. The best part about meeting Jennifer is her rate [$45 a session and a free consultation the first session] and she came to my home! Being able to come to my home was essential because i could barely take my dog out without him wanting to attack another dog. Jennifer came to my home, she was super friendly and once again gave me a sense of peace that everything was going to be okay. Additionally, she laid everything out on the table. I cannot tell you how much I appreciated this and I am sure you will appreciate it too. She doesn't hide anything behind the curtains, she is extremely up front about what the dog is going to need and genuinely concerned about the well being of the dog in whatever problem he or she is having. My dog was very responsive and overall my experience was enjoyable and i got the results i was looking for. I would recommend Jennifer to anyone looking to train a dog in any capacity!!

Peter has been helping train my very domineering rescue pup. He has been nothing short of amazing!!! He is patient and kind and takes his time with each session. Our dog is stubborn and aggressive towards men, week by week I have been seeing changes in our dogs behavior. I am surprised at how quickly he picks things up all in great part to Peter. I look forward to the changes that we will see in appointments to come. I would 100% recommended Peter if you are in need of a dog trainer.

Lisa is a highly gifted trainer! Her innate ability to instill calm behavior is unmatched by any trainer. Furthermore, her experience training horses gives her the ability to work with larger more unruly dogs. Where other trainers wanted to break the dog into submission or spoil them, Lisa walked a line that shows the dogs they are loved but are on the bottom of the totem pole. In addition, I was taught how to work with my dog in order to further his training. Her prices are more than fair and her results are amazing!

My experience with Sandy and the Pawsitive Experience was outstanding. The first thing I liked and appreciated was Sandy’s approach to assessing my situation. After getting acquainted with our dog and what I had hoped to accomplish with the dog training lessons, Sandy tailored a program to our needs and didn’t try to heap unnecessary add-ons to my program. Once the lessons began, the thing that stood out was Sandy’s attention, not only to our dog, but also to my family (and children, in particular). Sandy took the time during each lesson to integrate my young children into the lessons so that they could get comfortable around our dog and understand that the dog was young and needed time to grow up just as they do. My best endorsement of Sandy is to say that because of her help, we absolutely love having a dog as part of our family and our dog loves being part of our family. If you want a friendly, knowledgeable and professional dog trainer, give Sandy a call.

In a very short period of time, Steve was able to teach myself and my dog, Oozie, several new commands that we’ve been trying to learn for weeks, with treats and clickers...If you are looking for a real dog lover and professional trainer, Steve is your guy!

I adopted my 2 year old dog Kayla only 3 months ago and Mike, along with help from his 2 wonderful dogs, has helped us reach several milestones: teaching her to get in the car, introducing her to the dog park experience, learning to walk on the leash, and most importantly, building up my confidence so I can help Kayla build up hers. I highly recommend his services.

Rebecca is a very knowledgable and patient dog trainer. We worked with her to train our puppy. He was quite receptive to her training approach and is a wonderful young dog now. She provides training tips and information to us very clearly, which greatly helped us along the way. Not only was Rebecca wonderful with our puppy, she was also very patient and flexible with US, the dog owners. The fact that Rebecca is able to work with both the pet AND the owners to work out a training regime that worked for US really helped with the training process. Although we haven't seen Rebecca in a little while, she continues to check in to see how we're doing. I really don't know what we would have done without her! :) We would (and do) highly recommend Rebecca to anyone looking for help with their pets!

John is an incredible, high caliber, high efficacy trainer. This was our first time working with a professional dog trainer 1:1. We saw immediate results from the very 1st session through to the end. We were amazed by John's depth of knowledge. The tips he imparted were invaluable. John began with an overview by explaining his mythology, which was great - it provided a backdrop for how we should communicate with the dog and made absolute, perfect sense (clear one-word commands). He proceeded with the very basics as to what proper leash to use paired with recommended collar to helping us learn to train with the wireless collar. Despite having dogs before, we learned for the first time about marking behavior (correctly) for maximum impact and quick canine learning and more. We had a tricky (and not ideal) situation where we had a week to spend with the dog for training. None the less, John was willing to work with us and was flexible. He calibrated our expectations and I have to say he far exceeded what everyone hoped to accomplish with this stubborn, 3 year old Shiloh Shepard. It is clear he has a real love of dogs and wanted to help for the benefit of the dog and thus deviated a bit from his usual prescribed training program. It was a great learning experience for the humans and the canine. We're practicing and implementing the recommendations. We've already recommended John to another family. I would definitely hire John again without hesitation. Thank you, John.

I have nothing but positive feedback to give about Providence Dog Trainers. They are absolutely amazing, professional, and experts at what they do. I recommend them to anyone struggling to train their four legged friend, as I've seen first hand how they treat all of the dogs that they work with as one of their own. It is clear that this is not just a job for them, but a passion.

Excellent is an understatement. This is more than just obedience training. It is insight to the dog/human relationship, from the dogs point of view. I didn't think I could change the behavior of my 4 1/2 year old dog, but I was mistaken. I just needed to stop doing all the wrong things. Don't go elsewhere just to realize you should have made Progressive Canine Dog Training and Behavioral Services your first stop!

Noelle is my third try at finding a trainer for my dog whom I've had for only a year and he's now 4 years old. When I got him the person giving him away never told me anything of his aggressions which I now know he has. Noelle has been to my home a number of times so far and I love her. She is very patient, listens to me and knows that it takes time to not only train my dog but I need to be trained as well. She has given me a number of things to do with my dog that when implemented is spot on. The best part of the trainings is the one on one, especially if you have issues with your dog. I would highly recommend her as a trainer.

Amazing!! I couldn't be happier with the training my two shepherds recieved. They are wonderful off leash, I can bring them anywhere! I get compliments on how well they are trained all the time. If you want high quality training of your dog you've found the perfect place. I would and will take all my future dogs here. Titan (17 months when trained) and Layla (7 months when trained) are still well behaved and listen. Yet act like dogs, they still have their own personalities, that was no broken from them in training as some other trainers have done.

She is amazing with the animals! She taught my dog (and me) most of the basic commands in just 45 mins with great results! She spent a good 2 hrs. Talking about ways I can help my dog (new rescue), and how she is willing to help me. I could not have found a better, more personable trainer than Kim.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
